A Non-Point Source Study of Skaneateles Lake Tributaries

    Get PDF
Skaneateles Lake and its watershed are valuable natural resources to local communities, and the lake is the source of drinking water for the nearby city of Syracuse. In recent years, foam has been seen forming on the surface of Skaneateles Lake, and during late summer of this year was an outbreak of blue-green algae. Previous studies suggest that runoff from agricultural land in particular may be contributing nutrients to the lake that could influence the water quality. This study took surface water samples from four tributaries of Skaneateles Lake and analyzed them for orthophosphates, nitrate nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, and total suspended solids. To compare the nutrient contributions of agricultural land with those of other land use types, two tributaries were chosen with mostly agricultural sub-watersheds and two were chosen with primarily forested sub-watersheds. The nutrient analyses on water samples did not show a clear distinction between agricultural and forested watersheds. However, secondary analyses on phosphorous in sediments derived from agricultural activity and sediment loading rates during wet weather events suggest significant impacts from agriculture

Does inconsistent-handedness lead to a better memory or does a better memory lead to inconsistent-handedness?

The purpose of the study is measure the effect of handedness and hand use on memory for how specific tasks were performed. The hypothesis of the present study is that inconsistent-handers will have better memory than consistent-handers for the hand or hands they used to perform tasks. Data analysis was preformed on 30 inconsistent-handers and 45 consistent-handers, as classified by the modified Edinburg Handedness Inventory. Tasks were performed in five different hand-use conditions: always left, usually left, no preference, usually right, and always right. The results were that both consistency of handedness and hand use had an effect on memory. The implication is that inconsistent-handers may be classified as such because they are better at remembering how they performed tasks to begin with

The path to becoming a healthcare provider is a commitment to lifelong learning, constant hard work, and a career that is not about you. Every class you take, everything you learn, every experience you engage in is preparing you to be a competent and compassionate healthcare provider, so that one day you can walk into the room of a desperate patient and help them. The pay is average at best, especially considering the years of training. People will be angry at you when you are doing your best to help them. People will be angry when you do not want to work for free, and you can expect to burn out if you are doing it for the money. However, if you truly want this for whatever your one or many reasons are; it is worth it every day. For those of you who want to pursue this I will be happy to call you a colleague one day. Tips for success: Know what experiences you cannot get back You can work and make money later. You only get one chance to make a good grade in General Chemistry 1. Be focused but flexible If interested in pharmacy – pursue it! Take all prerequisites to qualify for medical, dental, PA, etc. programs as well Exercise reduces stress The less time you have for it, the more you need it. Be social and stay in touch with your classmates They’ll be doctors one day too

Investigating the Grassroots Activities of Northeastern State Political Parties

    Get PDF
In response to popular criticism that the major parties are more oligarchic organizations than democratic ones, this thesis builds upon previous research to offer a more current and nuanced understanding of the grassroots activities of state political parties in the northeastern U.S. Through interviews with state party executive and campaign directors, the civic capacity of political parties to promote participatory democratic action will be assessed. I will determine whether the major state parties are successfully engaging new voters/members, including existing members in electoral activities, recruiting candidates, and whether the methods employed could be described as grassroots

During the war, when superphosphate was in exceptionally short supply,a wheatbelt farmer experimented with a method of sowing a crop in which he had blocked each alternate drill run and in effect halved the rates of seed and super used on each acre. He expressed himself satisfied with the results and has since continued to plant the major portion of his crop in this manner

Maritime History of Skaneateles Lake, NY

    Get PDF
The Finger Lakes region in Central New York has a rich, often overlooked maritime past. Its unique geography with many rivers and large lakes made water the most efficient means of early transportation. Additionally, the strategic location between critical waterways on the Great Lakes and the Hudson River spurred the improvement of water routes through the region by European colonizers. Many factors, including natural resources, environmental quality, regional geography, and the method of European settlement influenced the development of maritime activity on each lake. Each lake in the Finger Lakes region developed different and distinct trans-lake industries largely depending on their location, resources, and later connection to transportation networks. The lack of connection to any canals prevented Skaneateles Lake from supporting much freight transportation, but the picturesque environment led to a thriving tourism industry. In the beginning of the 19th century Skaneateles Lake was primarily occupied by rafts, sailing barges, and private yachts. Commercial steamboats were introduced to the lake in 1831, but they were not economically successful until 1866. The first four of these boats serving as freighters and stage connections were failures, and two of them were converted to schooners for freight service. Railroad connection, reduced fares, and recreation destinations along the lake led to four successful steamboats in the latter half of the 19th century. By 1915 competition with automobiles and decreased demand caused steamboat service to cease

The article discusses the intellectual contribution of the Afro-Bahian engineer Theodoro Sampaio to indigenous culture in the early decades of the 20th century, based on the examination of the book "The Traveling Naturalists of the 18th and 19th Centuries and Indigenous Ethnography", organized and published in 1955 by Progresso publisher. The book brings together texts from different periods, and as a result of his scientific excursions throughout the national territory, his research provided information about the geological nature and geographic landscape of numerous visited locations, and especially about the contribution of indigenous culture to the Brazilian social formation, such as the importance of the Tupi language and the indigenous archaeology of the Maracás peoples in the interior of Bahia.
