    Embedded Systems Hardware Integration and Code Development for Maraia Capsule and E-MIST

    The cost of sending large spacecraft to orbit makes them undesirable for carrying out smaller scientific missions. Small spacecraft are more economical and can be tailored for missions where specific tasks need to be carried out, the Maraia capsule is such a spacecraft. Maraia will allow for samples of experiments conducted on the International Space Station to be returned to earth. The use of balloons to conduct experiments at the edge of space is a practical approach to reducing the large expense of using rockets. E-MIST is a payload designed to fly on a high altitude balloon. It can maintain science experiments in a controlled manner at the edge of space. The work covered here entails the integration of hardware onto each of the mentioned systems and the code associated with such work. In particular, the resistance temperature detector, pressure transducers, cameras, and thrusters for Maraia are discussed. The integration of the resistance temperature detectors and motor controllers to E-MIST is described. Several issues associated with sensor accuracy, code lock-up, and in-flight reset issues are mentioned. The solutions and proposed solutions to these issues are explained

    Non-Equilibrium Dynamics and Superfluid Ring Excitations in Binary Bose-Einstein Condensates

    We revisit a classic study [D. S. Hall {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 81}, 1539 (1998)] of interpenetrating Bose-Einstein condensates in the hyperfine states ∣F=1,mf=−1⟩≡∣1⟩\ket{F = 1, m_f = -1}\equiv\ket{1} and ∣F=2,mf=+1⟩≡∣2⟩\ket{F = 2, m_f = +1}\equiv\ket{2} of 87{}^{87}Rb and observe striking new non-equilibrium component separation dynamics in the form of oscillating ring-like structures. The process of component separation is not significantly damped, a finding that also contrasts sharply with earlier experimental work, allowing a clean first look at a collective excitation of a binary superfluid. We further demonstrate extraordinary quantitative agreement between theoretical and experimental results using a multi-component mean-field model with key additional features: the inclusion of atomic losses and the careful characterization of trap potentials (at the level of a fraction of a percent).Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures (low res.), to appear in PR

    Preliminary proposal of a metric for assessing and improving the impact of open-access heritage collections on Wikipedia

    Institutions are increasingly moving toward providing access to collections digitally through open-access initiatives. Measuring this impact and providing metrics to benchmark progress remains an open challenge. This project aims to tackle part of this challenge, focusing on digitized image collections made available via Wikimedia. This work in progress is attempting to create a generalizable and consistent metric which can be used to maximize the potential impact of featuring an image from a collection within a certain Wikipedia entry. The metric considers several quantitative elements that represent specific aspects of impact and is demonstrated for a collection of landscape painting. We focus on impact through a public engagement lens, optimizing our metric to drive an increase in the number of people interacting with items in a collection. Future work will explore more advanced NLP methods and different collection types
