Modelling the microfiltration of lactic acid fermentation broths and comparison of operating modes
clarification of fermentation broths by cross-flow microfiltration. Microfiltration experiments conducted under
constant transmembrane pressure and under constant permeate fluxes (higher and lower than the critical flux)
were represented by the resistance in series model in which the membrane resistance, the adsorption resistance,
the bacteria cake resistance and the soluble compounds concentration polarisation resistance were taken into
account. The different operating modes were compared in terms of two industrial interest criteria: the
productivity and fouling rates. Higher productivities were obtained during constant transmembrane pressure
runs whereas the lowest fouling rate was observed during the run conducted with a constant permeate flux lower
than the critical flux. However, this fouling was mainly due to adsorption and solute components concentration
polarisation.

Off-equilibrium corrections to energy and conserved charge densities in the relativistic fluid in heavy-ion collisions
Dissipative processes in relativistic fluids are known to be important in the
analyses of the hot QCD matter created in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. In
this work, I consider dissipative corrections to energy and conserved charge
densities, which are conventionally assumed to be vanishing but could be
finite. Causal dissipative hydrodynamics is formulated in the presence of those
dissipative currents. The relation between hydrodynamic stability and transport
coefficients is discussed. I then study their phenomenological consequences on
the observables of heavy-ion collisions in numerical simulations. It is shown
that particle spectra and elliptic flow can be visibly modified.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures; title changed, references added, conclusions

A model structure for the Goldman-Millson theorem
By a result of Vallette, we put a sensible model structure on the category of
conilpotent Lie coalgebras. This gives us a powerful tool to study the
subcategory of Lie algebras obtained by linear dualization, also known as the
category of pronilpotent Lie algebras. This way, we recover weaker versions of
the celebrated Goldman-Millson theorem and Dolgushev-Rogers theorem by purely
homotopical methods. We explore the relations of this procedure with the
existent literature, namely the works of Lazarev-Markl and
Buijs-F\'elix-Murillo-Tanr\'e.Comment: 20 pages. (v2) fixed formatting of abstract on arXiv, the core text

Learning-Based Dequantization For Image Restoration Against Extremely Poor Illumination
All existing image enhancement methods, such as HDR tone mapping, cannot
recover A/D quantization losses due to insufficient or excessive lighting,
(underflow and overflow problems). The loss of image details due to A/D
quantization is complete and it cannot be recovered by traditional image
processing methods, but the modern data-driven machine learning approach offers
a much needed cure to the problem. In this work we propose a novel approach to
restore and enhance images acquired in low and uneven lighting. First, the ill
illumination is algorithmically compensated by emulating the effects of
artificial supplementary lighting. Then a DCNN trained using only synthetic
data recovers the missing detail caused by quantization
Evidence for PAH Removal Coupled to the First Steps of Anaerobic Digestion in Sewage Sludge
Anaerobic degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons has been brought to the fore, but information on removal kinetics and anaerobic degrading bacteria is still lacking. In order to explore the organic micropollutants removal kinetics under anaerobic conditions in regard to the methane production kinetics, the removal rate of 12 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons was measured in two anaerobic batch reactors series fed with a highly loaded secondary sludge as growth substrate. The results underscore that organic micropollutants removal is coupled to the initial stages of anaerobic digestion (acidogenesis and acetogenesis). In addition, the organic micropollutants kinetics suggest that the main removal mechanisms of these hydrophobic compounds are biodegradation and/or sequestration depending on the compounds
Screening of Phytophagous and Xylophagous Insects Guts Microbiota Abilities to Degrade Lignocellulose in Bioreactor
Microbial consortia producing specific enzymatic cocktails are present in the gut of phytophagous and xylophagous insects; they are known to be the most efficient ecosystems to degrade lignocellulose. Here, the ability of these consortia to degrade ex vivo lignocellulosic biomass in anaerobic bioreactors was characterized in term of bioprocess performances, enzymatic activities and bacterial community structure. In a preliminary screening, guts of Ergates faber (beetle), Potosia cuprea (chafer), Gromphadorrhina portentosa (cockroach), Locusta migratoria (locust), and Gryllus bimaculatus (cricket) were inoculated in anaerobic batch reactors, in presence of grounded wheat straw at neutral pH. A short duration fermentation of less than 8 days was observed and was related to a drop of pH from 7 to below 4.5, leading to an interruption of gas and metabolites production. Consistently, a maximum of 180 mgeq.COD of metabolites accumulated in the medium, which was related to a low degradation of the lignocellulosic biomass, with a maximum of 5 and 2.2% observed for chafer and locust gut consortia. The initial cell-bound and extracellular enzyme activities, i.e., xylanase and β-endoglucanase, were similar to values observed in the literature. Wheat straw fermentation in bioreactors leads to an increase of cell-bounded enzyme activities, with an increase of 145% for cockroach xylanase activity. Bacterial community structures were insect dependent and mainly composed of Clostridia, Bacteroidia and Gammaproteobacteria. Improvement of lignocellulose biodegradation was operated in successive batch mode at pH 8 using the most interesting consortia, i.e., locust, cockroaches and chafer gut consortia. In these conditions, lignocellulose degradation increased significantly: 8.4, 10.5, and 21.0% of the initial COD were degraded for chafer, cockroaches and locusts, respectively in 15 days. Consistently, xylanase activity tripled for the three consortia, attesting the improvement of the process. Bacteroidia was the major bacterial class represented in the bacterial community for all consortia, followed by Clostridia and Gammaproteobacteria classes. This work demonstrates the possibility to maintain apart of insect gut biological activity ex vivo and shows that lignocellulose biodegradation can be improved by using a biomimetic approach. These results bring new insights for the optimization of lignocellulose degradation in bioreactors
