    Predicting risk of malignancy in patients with indeterminate thyroid nodules

    Thyroid cancer is the most prevalent endocrine cancer (1). The prevalence of palpable thyroid nodules in the general adult population is 4% to 7% (2). Ultrasound imaging detects thyroid nodules in 19%-68% of randomly selected individuals (3). The rate of thyroid cancer in nodules found on US is 4% to 15% (4). In order to evaluate thyroid nodules patients undergo thyroid ultrasonography and, if needed, a fine-needle aspiration biopsy. Of all fine-needle aspiration biopsies, 15-30% are indeterminate on cytology (5). While only 3% of these nodules are malignant on average, a much higher percentage of nodules are surgically removed in order to rule out malignancy after indeterminate FNA results. Our goal is to identify clinical and ultrasound predictors of benign results in indeterminate nodules, to assist physicians in selecting nodules for surgical removal versus monitoring with ultrasound imaging. Between October 2010 and November 2017 there were 129 patients with 134 thyroid nodules from Temple University Hospital, Jeanes Hospital, and Fox Chase Cancer Center who had a total or partial thyroidectomy after a cytology report of at least one AUS or FLUS thyroid nodule. These patients were evaluated for age, sex, BMI, TSH, fT4, tT3, nodule size, and ultrasonography features to determine if any features were predictive of a benign or malignant thyroid nodule. Additionally, we looked at whether any of these features were more likely to occur in an AUS nodule or a FLUS nodule. We found that none of the demographic factors, thyroid function tests, or ultrasound features were good predictors of malignancy in AUS or FLUS thyroid nodules. We found that AUS nodules are more likely to be malignant than FLUS nodules, and this held true when we accounted for age, sex, smoking history, and BMI. We concluded that demographic factors and thyroid function tests are unable to predict increased risk of malignancy in Bethesda category III nodules, AUS nodules are more likely to be malignant that FLUS nodules, and nodules with at least one suspicious ultrasound feature are more likely to be AUS nodules than FLUS nodules due to AUS nodules having nuclear atypia and FLUS nodules having architectural atypia

    Observable Persistent Effects of Habitat Management Efforts in the Ozark Highlands After 10 Years

    I investigated the lasting impacts of a management plan designed to improve oak regeneration and benefit wildlife in the Ozark Highlands in Madison, Co., AR. To assess the efficacy of the management plan, I used variables relevant to the success and establishment of oak trees. Controlled burns and selective logging were used to thin the canopy, increase ground level productivity, and increase the abundance of small mammals. I used measurements of overstory and understory densities, light availability, and the density of mice in the genus Peromyscus across time to look at the lasting impacts of management. Different treatment plots were used to investigate the impact of each management action separately (Burn or Cut) and in combination (Burn and Cut) relative to unaltered control plots. Measurements were compared between pre-treatment, post-treatment, and 10-years post-treatment time points. I found that a 10-year lapse in management resulted in a complete return to pre-treatment values in overstory density. I also saw a decline below pre-treatment values in understory density and Peromyscus density. Analysis of light availability at the forest floor revealed a persistent effect of treatment. I conclude that while initial treatment was effective, 10 years between management events is too infrequent to achieve the desired long-term changes within my study system. More frequent management may be more effective in meeting the management goals for this Ozark system

    NASA is one of the few research centers concerned with motion sickness. Since the physiology of man has been developed in the one-gravity field Earth, the changes experienced by man in space are unique, and often result in symptoms that resemble motion sickness on Earth. NASA is concerned with motion sickness because it is very uncomfortable for the astronauts. Another concern of NASA is the possibility of a motion sickness astronaut regurgitating while he or she is sealed in an airtight space suit. This could be fatal. Motivated by these reasons, NASA spent thousands of dollars in research and development for a drug or technique for combating motion sickness. Several different treatments were developed for this disorder. Three of the most effective ways of combatting motion sickness are discussed

    Risk and Abnormal Returns in Markets for Congestion Revenue Rights

    In organized energy markets that use locational pricing, power generators and energy suppliers procure financial transmission rights (FTRs) to hedge against grid con- gestion charges, while third-party speculators attempt to capture a return with these extremely volatile contracts. This paper develops a novel methodology for estimating the systematic risk of individual FTRs and detecting the presence of abnormal returns among these financial instruments. The prevalence of congestion paths with abnormal returns could be used by policy experts as an efficiency measure when assessing the performance of FTR markets. Being the only organized energy market in the Western Interconnection, California has implemented a version of FTRs officially known as congestion revenue rights (CRRs). This paper applies the proposed methodology to all auctioned CRRs from 2009 to 2015. Our analysis identifies the paths that exhibit persistent abnormal returns, with the majority of them being positive. We also compare the patterns of risk and abnormal returns between on-peak and off-peak CRRs, and find no significant differences
