Ammonia observations of the nearby molecular cloud MBM 12
We present NH3(1,1) and NH3(2,2) observations of MBM 12, the closest known
molecular cloud (65 pc distance), aimed to find evidence for on-going star
formation processes. No local temperature (with a T_rot upper limit of 12 K)
nor linewidth enhancement is found, which suggests that the area of the cloud
we mapped (~ 15' size) is not currently forming stars. Therefore, this close
``starless'' molecular gas region is an ideal laboratory to study the physical
conditions preceding new star formation.
A radio continuum source was found in Very Large Array archive data, close
but outside the NH3 emission. This source is likely to be a background object.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted by MNRA

How tight should one's hands be tied? Fear of floating and credibility of exchange rate regimes
This paper analyzes the linkages between the credibility of a target zone regime, the volatility of the exchange rate, and the width of the band where the exchange rate is allowed to fluctuate. These three concepts should be related since the band width induces a trade-off between credibility and volatility. Narrower bands should give less scope for the exchange rate to fluctuate but may make agents perceive a larger probability of realignment which by itself should increase the volatility of the exchange rate. We build a model where this trade-off is made explicit. The model is used to understand the reduction in volatility experienced by most EMS countries after their target zones were widened on August 1993. As a natural extension, the model also rationalizes the existence of non-official, implicit target zones (or fear of floating), suggested by some authors.fear of floating, target zones, exchange rate arrangements, rational expectations, credibility

How tight should one's hands be tied? Fear of floating and credibility of exchange regimes.
The literature on exchange regimes has recently observed that officially self-declared free floaters strongly intervene their nominal exchange rates to maintain them within some unannounced bands. In this paper, we provide an explanation for this behavior, labeled by Calvo and Reinhart (2002) as fear of floating. First, we analyze the linkages between the credibility of the exchange regime, the volatility of the exchange rate and the band width of fluctuation. Second, the model is used to understand the reduction in volatility experienced by most ERM countries after their target zones were widened on August 1993. Finally, solving the model for a subgame perfect equilibrium, fear of floating can be viewed as the credible choice of a finite non-zero bandFear of floating, target zones, exchange rate arrangements, credibility
