Characterization of Salmonella enterica Ituri isolated from diseased poultry in Nigeria
Salmonella enterica Ituri is an uncommon serotype associated with poultry disease. One of the serotype isolated from a poultry disease in Nigeria was characterized by serotyping and screening for the presence of Salmonella genomic island 1(SGI1) as a possible factor responsible for its involvement in a poultry disease outbreak. Despite the similarities in the antibiotic sensitivities patterns of the Salmonella Ituri serotypes with some SGI1-bearing serotypes, it does not bear the SGI1. Beyond CME: Diabetes Education Field-Interactive Strategies from Sweden
The Diabetes Educational and Training Unit (DETU) at Karolinska Hospital is a permanent, continuing medical education unit working with general practitioners and nurse teams from Stockholm's neigh borhood health centers. It offers a two-week educational program four times a year, teaching a comprehensive approach to diabetes care. Evaluation research found that centers that had implemented the approach taught at the CME course had excellent staff rapport and produced patients who were more knowledgeable about their disease and better able to engage in self-care. As a result of this research, the Stockholm DETU has added innovative field- interactive strategies to stimulate centers that have not implemented the program. These strategies include techniques to enhance staff rapport, increase knowledge and interest in care for people with diabetes, and arrive at staff- determined approaches for organizing diabetes care. Measuring the intelligence of an idealized mechanical knowing agent
We define a notion of the intelligence level of an idealized mechanical knowing agent. This is motivated by efforts within artificial intelligence research to define real-number intelligence levels of compli- cated intelligent systems. Our agents are more idealized, which allows us to define a much simpler measure of intelligence level for them. In short, we define the intelligence level of a mechanical knowing agent to be the supremum of the computable ordinals that have codes the agent knows to be codes of computable ordinals. We prove that if one agent knows certain things about another agent, then the former necessarily has a higher intelligence level than the latter. This allows our intelligence no- tion to serve as a stepping stone to obtain results which, by themselves, are not stated in terms of our intelligence notion (results of potential in- terest even to readers totally skeptical that our notion correctly captures intelligence). As an application, we argue that these results comprise evidence against the possibility of intelligence explosion (that is, the no- tion that sufficiently intelligent machines will eventually be capable of designing even more intelligent machines, which can then design even more intelligent machines, and so on)
An explanation for a universality of transition temperatures in families of copper oxide superconductors
A remarkable mystery of the copper oxide high-transition-temperature (Tc)
superconductors is the dependence of Tc on the number of CuO2 layers, n, in the
unit cell of a crystal. In a given family of these superconductors, Tc rises
with the number of layers, reaching a peak at n=3, and then declines: the
result is a bell-shaped curve. Despite the ubiquity of this phenomenon, it is
still poorly understood and attention has instead been mainly focused on the
properties of a single CuO2 plane. Here we show that the quantum tunnelling of
Cooper pairs between the layers simply and naturally explains the experimental
results, when combined with the recently quantified charge imbalance of the
layers and the latest notion of a competing order nucleated by this charge
imbalance that suppresses superconductivity. We calculate the bell-shaped curve
and show that, if materials can be engineered so as to minimize the charge
imbalance as n increases, Tc can be raised further.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures. The version published in Natur
Three-Nucleon Electroweak Capture Reactions
Recent advances in the study of the p-d radiative and mu-3he weak capture
processes are presented and discussed. The three-nucleon bound and scattering
states are obtained using the correlated-hyperspherical-harmonics method, with
realistic Hamiltonians consisting of the Argonne v14 or Argonne v18 two-nucleon
and Tucson-Melbourne or Urbana IX three-nucleon interactions. The
electromagnetic and weak transition operators include one- and two-body
contributions. The theoretical accuracy achieved in these calculations allows

Low energy collective modes, Ginzburg-Landau theory, and pseudogap behavior in superconductors with long-range pairing interactions
We study the superconducting instability in systems with long but finite
ranged, attractive, pairing interactions. We show that such long-ranged
superconductors exhibit a new class of fluctuations in which the internal
structure of the Cooper pair wave function is soft, and thus lead to
"pseudogap" behavior in which the actual transition temperature is greatly
depressed from its mean field value. These fluctuations are {\it not} phase
fluctuations of the standard superconducting order parameter, and lead to a
highly unusual Ginzburg-Landau description. We suggest that the crossover
between the BCS limit of a short-ranged attraction and our problem is of

Degeneracy: a link between evolvability, robustness and complexity in biological systems
A full accounting of biological robustness remains elusive; both in terms of the mechanisms by which robustness is achieved and the forces that have caused robustness to grow over evolutionary time. Although its importance to topics such as ecosystem services and resilience is well recognized, the broader relationship between robustness and evolution is only starting to be fully appreciated. A renewed interest in this relationship has been prompted by evidence that mutational robustness can play a positive role in the discovery of adaptive innovations (evolvability) and evidence of an intimate relationship between robustness and complexity in biology.
This paper offers a new perspective on the mechanics of evolution and the origins of complexity, robustness, and evolvability. Here we explore the hypothesis that degeneracy, a partial overlap in the functioning of multi-functional components, plays a central role in the evolution and robustness of complex forms. In support of this hypothesis, we present evidence that degeneracy is a fundamental source of robustness, it is intimately tied to multi-scaled complexity, and it establishes conditions that are necessary for system evolvability
Mindfulness based interventions in multiple sclerosis: a systematic review
<b>Background</b> Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a stressful condition; depression, anxiety, pain and fatigue are all common problems. Mindfulness based interventions (MBIs) mitigate stress and prevent relapse in depression and are increasingly being used in healthcare. However, there are currently no systematic reviews of MBIs in people with MS. This review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of MBIs in people with MS.<p></p>
<b>Methods</b> Systematic searches were carried out in seven major databases, using both subject headings and key words. Papers were screened, data extracted, quality appraised, and analysed by two reviewers independently, using predefined criteria. Study quality was assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration risk of bias tool. Perceived stress was the primary outcome. Secondary outcomes include mental health, physical health, quality of life, and health service utilisation. Statistical meta-analysis was not possible. Disagreements were adjudicated by a third party reviewer.<p></p>
<b>Results</b> Three studies (n = 183 participants) were included in the final analysis. The studies were undertaken in Wales (n = 16, randomised controlled trial - (RCT)), Switzerland (n = 150, RCT), and the United States (n = 17, controlled trial). 146 (80%) participants were female; mean age (SD) was 48.6 (9.4) years. Relapsing remitting MS was the main diagnostic category (n = 123, 67%); 43 (26%) had secondary progressive disease; and the remainder were unspecified. MBIs lasted 6–8 weeks; attrition rates were variable (5-43%); all employed pre- post- measures; two had longer follow up; one at 3, and one at 6 months. Socio-economic status of participants was not made explicit; health service utilisation and costs were not reported. No study reported on perceived stress. All studies reported quality of life (QOL), mental health (anxiety and depression), physical (fatigue, standing balance, pain), and psychosocial measures. Statistically significant beneficial effects relating to QOL, mental health, and selected physical health measures were sustained at 3- and 6- month follow up.<p></p>
<b>Conclusion</b> From the limited data available, MBIs may benefit some MS patients in terms of QOL, mental health, and some physical health measures. Further studies are needed to clarify how MBIs might best serve the MS population.<p></p>
