    Effects of a Mindfulness Intervention to Improve Teachers’ Well-being

    Teacher attrition has increased by 50% over the past 15 years. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a mindfulness-based intervention would be effective for reducing stress and increasing mindfulness, self-efficacy, job satisfaction, and well-being among teachers at Title I (low-income) schools. The researchers evaluated the effects of a mindfulness intervention created specifically for teachers using a four-way ANOVA (2 × 3 × 2 × 5) with two between subjects’ factors, groups and levels, and two within subjects/repeated measures factors, pretest-posttest and scales. While the study did not show significant effects for mindfulness, stress, self-efficacy, and well-being, teachers in the control group demonstrated significantly lower levels of job satisfaction compared to the experimental group. These results are commensurate with previous studies that suggest with a mindfulness-based intervention, teachers report increased job satisfaction

    Exploring the Effectiveness of a Prevocational Seminar on Self-Efficacy and Work Motivation among Adults Residing in an Inpatient Mental Health Facility

    Objective: This study examined a work-related intervention designed to assist people with serious mental illness (SMI) in overcoming employment barriers. Methods: A pre- post-test experimental design was used to investigate the effects of a 10-session, prevocational seminar on self-efficacy and work motivation among adults with SMI residing in an inpatient psychiatric facility. Three one-way ANCOVAs were applied to analyze post-test results for the dependent measures. Findings: Although significant findings were not found regarding the effectiveness of the prevocational seminar on self-efficacy, other interesting discoveries were made. One noteworthy outcome was persons with SMI wanted to work but experienced barriers, including discrimination, decreased motivation, and work disincentives that impeded their return to employment. Conclusions and Implications for Practice: Vocational rehabilitation (VR) counselors continue to face challenges in their efforts to increase employment among persons with SMI. The results from the present study underscore the need for skills training and innovative VR strategies to mitigate barriers to employment among persons with SMI

    Supersymmetric QCD flavor changing top quark decay

    We present a detailed and complete calculation of the gluino and scalar quarks contribution to the flavour-changing top quark decay into a charm quark and a photon, gluon, or a Z boson within the minimal supersymmetric standard model including flavour changing gluino-quarks-scalar quarks couplings in the right-handed sector. We compare the results with the ones presented in an earlier paper where we considered flavour changing couplings only in the left-handed sector. We show that these new couplings have important consequences leading to a large enhancement when the mixing of the scalar partners of the left- and right-handed top quark is included. Furthermore CP violation in the flavour changing top quark decay will occur when a SUSY phase is taken into account.Comment: 14 pages, latex, 3 figure

    R-parity-violating SUSY effects and signals in single top production at the Tevatron

    We discuss single top quark production via u^i+\bar d^j \to t+\bar b at the Fermilab Tevatron in the minimal supersymmetric model with R-parity violation. We find that within the allowed range of coupling constants, the lepton-number violating couplings can give rise to observable effects when the slepton mass lies in a specific narrow range. For the baryon-number violating couplings, the contribution to the production rate can be quite large in the presently allowed range of the coupling constants. We show that the measurement of single top production at the upgraded Tevatron can be used to constrain a linear combination of products of the R-parity violating couplings.Comment: revised version which will appear in Phys.Rev.

    Non-Abelian dynamics and heavy multiquarks, Steiner-tree confinement in hadron spectroscopy

    A brief review is first presented of attempts to predict stable multiquark states within current models of hadron spectroscopy.     History of exotic Meson (4-quark) and Baryon (5-quark) States

    I briefly review the history of exotic meson (4-quark) and baryon (5-quark) states, which is rooted in the formalism of Regge pole and duality. There are robust model-independent predictions for the exchange of 4-quark (Baryonium) Regge trajectories in several processes, which are strongly supported by experiment. On the other hand the predictions for the spectroscopy of 4-quark resonances are based on specific QCD inspired models, with some experimental support. The corresponding predictions for the recently discovered exotic baryon (Pentaquark) state are briefly discussed.Comment: 14 pages Latex including 4 eps figures, final version to appear as a topical review in J.     Hadroproduction and Polarization of Charmonium

    In the limit of heavy quark mass, the production cross section and polarization of quarkonia can be calculated in perturbative QCD. We study the p⊥p_\perp-averaged production of charmonium states in πN\pi N collisions at fixed target energies. The data on the relative production rates of \jp and χJ\chi_J is found to disagree with leading twist QCD. The polarization of the \jp indicates that the discrepancy is not due to poorly known parton distributions nor to the size of higher order effects (KK-factors). Rather, the disagreement suggests important higher twist corrections, as has been surmised earlier from the nuclear target AA-dependence of the production cross section.Comment: 19 page

    Structure and reactions of pentaquark baryons

    We review the current status of the exotic pentaquark baryons. After a brief look at experiments of both positive and negative results, we discuss theoretical methods to study the structure and reactions for the pentaquarks. First we introduce the quark model and the chiral soliton model, where we discuss the relation of mass spectrum and parity with some emphasis on the role of chiral symmetry. It is always useful to picture the structure of the pentaquarks in terms of quarks. As for other methods, we discuss a model independent method, and briefly mention the results from the lattice and QCD sum rule. Decay properties are then studied in some detail, which is one of the important properties of Theta+. We investigate the relation between the decay width and the quark structure having certain spin-parity quantum numbers. Through these analyses, we consider as plausible quantum numbers of Theta+, JP = 3/2-. In the last part of this note, we discuss production reactions of Theta+ which provide links between the theoretical models and experimental information.
