Evaluating matrix elements relevant to some Lorenz violating operators
Carlson, Carone and Lebed have derived the Feynman rules for a consistent
formulation of noncommutative QCD. The results they obtained were used to
constrain the noncommutativity parameter in Lorentz violating noncommutative
field theories. However, their constraint depended upon an estimate of the
matrix element of the quark level operator (gamma.p - m) in a nucleon. In this
paper we calculate the matrix element of (gamma.p - m), using a variety of
confinement potential models. Our results are within an order of magnitude
agreement with the estimate made by Carlson et al. The constraints placed on
the noncommutativity parameter were very strong, and are still quite severe
even if weakened by an order of magnitude.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, RevTex, minor change
Optimal vaccination in a stochastic epidemic model of two non-interacting populations
Developing robust, quantitative methods to optimize resource allocations in
response to epidemics has the potential to save lives and minimize health care
costs. In this paper, we develop and apply a computationally efficient
algorithm that enables us to calculate the complete probability distribution
for the final epidemic size in a stochastic Susceptible-Infected-Recovered
(SIR) model. Based on these results, we determine the optimal allocations of a
limited quantity of vaccine between two non-interacting populations. We compare
the stochastic solution to results obtained for the traditional, deterministic
SIR model. For intermediate quantities of vaccine, the deterministic model is a
poor estimate of the optimal strategy for the more realistic, stochastic case.Comment: 21 pages, 7 figure
Leading-Log Effects in the Resonance Electroweak Form Factors
We study log corrections to inelastic scattering at high Bjorken x for Q^2
from 1 to 21 GeV^2. At issue is the presence of log corrections, which can be
absent if high x scattering has damped gluon radiation. We find logarithmic
correction of the scaling curve extrapolated to low Q^2 improves the duality
between it and the resonance plus background data in the Delta region,
indicating log corrections exist in the data. However, at W > 2 GeV and high x,
the data shows a (1-x)^3 form. Log corrections in one situation but not in
another can be reconciled by a W- or Q^2- dependent higher twist correction.Comment: 13 pages, report nos. RPI-94-N90 and WM-94-106, revtex, two figures

MHD oxidant intermediate temperature ceramic heater study
The use of three types of directly fired ceramic heaters for preheating oxygen enriched air to an intermediate temperature of 1144K was investigated. The three types of ceramic heaters are: (1) a fixed bed, periodic flow ceramic brick regenerative heater; (2) a ceramic pebble regenerative heater. The heater design, performance and operating characteristics under conditions in which the particulate matter is not solidified are evaluated. A comparison and overall evaluation of the three types of ceramic heaters and temperature range determination at which the particulate matter in the MHD exhaust gas is estimated to be a dry powder are presented
Baryon Resonance Analysis from MAID
The unitary isobar model MAID2007 has been used to analyze the recent data of
pion electroproduction. The model contains all four-star resonances in the
region below W=2 GeV and both single-Q^2 and Q^2 dependent transition form
factors could be obtained for the Delta, Roper, D13(1520), S11(1535),
S31(1620), S11(1650), D15(1675), F15(1680) and P13(1720). From the complete
world data base, including also pi- data on the neutron, also Q^2 dependent
neutron form factors are obtained. For all transition form factors we also give
convenient numerical parameterizations that can be used in other reactions.
Furthermore, we show how the transition form factors can be used to obtain
empirical transverse charge densities and our first results are given for the
Roper, the S11 and D13 resonances.Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables, Proc. of NSTAR2009, Beijin
Masses of the 70- Baryons in Large Nc QCD
The masses of the negative parity 70-plet baryons are analyzed in large N_c
QCD to order 1/N_c and to first order in SU(3) symmetry breaking. The existing
experimental data are well reproduced and twenty new observables are predicted.
The leading order SU(6) spin-flavor symmetry breaking is small and, as it
occurs in the quark model, the subleading in 1/N_c hyperfine interaction is the
dominant source of the breaking. It is found that the Lambda(1405) and
Lambda(1520) are well described as three-quark states and spin-orbit partners.
New relations between splittings in different SU(3) multiplets are found.Comment: 11 pages; references were added and a couple of improvements to the

Experimental and Theoretical Results for Weak Charge Current Backward Proton Production
In this paper, we do three things in the study of deuteron break-up by high
energy neutrino beams. (1) We present previously unpublished data on neutrino
induced backward protons from deuteron targets; (2) we calculate the
contributions from both the two-nucleon (2N) and six-quark (6q) deuteron
components, which depend upon the overall normalization of the part that is 6q;
and (3) we suggest other signatures for distinguishing the 2N and 6q clusters.
We conclude that the 6q cluster easily explains the shape of the high momentum
backward proton spectrum, and its size is nicely explained if the amount of 6q
is one or a few percent by normalization of the deuteron. There is a crossover,
above which the 6q contribution is important or dominant, at 300--400 MeV/c
backward proton momentum.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
1/Nc Countings in Baryons
The power countings for baryon decays and configuration mixings are
determined by means of a non-relativistic quark picture. Such countings are
expected to be robust under changes in the quark masses, and therefore valid as
these become light. It is shown that excited baryons have natural widths of
. These dominant widths are due to the decays that proceed
directly to the ground state baryons, with cascade decays being suppressed to
. Configuration mixings, defined as mixings between states
belonging to different multiplets, are shown to be
sub-leading in an expansion in when they involve the ground
state baryons, while the mixings between excited states can be
