    Iterated reflection principles over full disquotational truth

    Iterated reflection principles have been employed extensively to unfold epistemic commitments that are incurred by accepting a mathematical theory. Recently this has been applied to theories of truth. The idea is to start with a collection of Tarski-biconditionals and arrive by finitely iterated reflection at strong compositional truth theories. In the context of classical logic it is incoherent to adopt an initial truth theory in which A and 'A is true' are inter-derivable. In this article we show how in the context of a weaker logic, which we call Basic De Morgan Logic, we can coherently start with such a fully disquotational truth theory and arrive at a strong compositional truth theory by applying a natural uniform reflection principle a finite number of times

We argue that scientific type-free truth cannot do justificatory work in the foundations of mathematics. We also present an argument, based on Crispin Wright's theory of cognitive projects and entitlement, that disquotational truth can do justificatory work in the foundations of mathematics. The price to pay for this is that the concept of disquotational truth requires non-classical logical treatment

    Endovascular management of massive post-partum haemorrhage in abnormal placental implantation deliveries

    Objectives: To retrospectively evaluate safety and efficacy of pelvic artery embolisation (PAE) in post-partum haemorrhage (PPH) in abnormal placental implantation (API) deliveries. Methods: From January 2009 to November 2013, 12 patients with API and intractable intraoperative PPH underwent PAE after caesarean delivery to control a haemorrhage (in four of these cases after hysterectomy). Arterial access was obtained prior to the delivery; PAE was performed in the obstetrics operating room by an interventional radiologist that was present with an interventional radiology (IR) team during the delivery. Results: PAE was successful in preventing bleeding and avoid hysterectomy in four cases (group A). Uterine atony and disseminated intravascular coagulation caused failure of PAE requiring hysterectomy in four patients (group B). PAE prevented bleeding post-hysterectomy in the remaining four cases (group C). Technical success (cessation of contrast extravasation on angiography or occlusion of the selected artery) was 100 %. Maternal and foetal mortality and morbidity were 0 %. Conclusions: PAE is a minimal invasive technique that may help to prevent hysterectomy and control PPH in API pregnancies without complications. Embolisation should be performed on an emergency basis. For such cases, an IR team on standby in the obstetrics theatre may be useful to prevent hysterectomy, blood loss and limit morbidity.     SeaBase : a multispecies transcriptomic resource and platform for gene network inference

This is due to the great diversity of these organisms and their wide-ranging capabilities. Genomics tools are essential for taking advantage of these “free lessons” of nature. However, genomics and transcriptomics are challenging in emerging model systems. Here, we present SeaBase, a tool for helping to meet these needs. Specifically, SeaBase provides a platform for sharing and searching transcriptome data. More importantly, SeaBase will support a growing number of tools for inferring gene network mechanisms. The first dataset available on SeaBase is a developmental transcriptome profile of the sea anemone Nematostella vectensis (Anthozoa, Cnidaria). Additional datasets are currently being prepared and we are aiming to expand SeaBase to include user-supplied data for any number of marine and aquatic organisms, thereby supporting many potentially new models for gene network studies.2015-06-0

    Human health as a motivator for climate change mitigation: results from four European high-income countries

    Invoking health benefits to promote climate-friendly household behavior has three unique advantages: (i) health co-benefits accrue directly to the acting individual, they are “private goods” rather than public ones; (ii) the evidence base for, and magnitude of health co-benefits is well-established; and (iii) the idea of a healthy life-style is well-engrained in public discourse, much more so than that of a climate-friendly life-style. In previous research, assessing the influence of information on health effects on people's motivation to adopt mitigation actions, health co-benefits for the individual were typically confounded with collective health co-benefits, for example from pollution reduction. The present research aims to overcome this limitation by providing information on individual health co-benefits that are unconditional on the actions of others (direct health co-benefits). We report effects of this kind of health information on stated willingness to adopt mitigation actions as well as on simulation-based carbon emission reductions in a pre-registered experimental setting among 308 households in 4 mid-size case-study cities in 4 European high-income countries: France, Germany, Norway and Sweden. For each mitigation action from the sectors food, housing, and mobility, half of the sample received the amount of CO2equivalents (CO2-eq) saved and the financial costs or savings the respective action generated. The other half additionally received information on direct health co-benefits, where applicable. For households receiving information on direct health co-benefits, we find a higher mean willingness to adopt food and housing actions, and a greater proportion very willing to adopt one or more mitigation actions (OR 1.86, 95% CI 1.1, 3.12); and a greater simulated reduction in overall carbon footprint: difference in percent reduction -2.70%, (95% CI -5.34, -0.04) overall and -4.45%, (95% CI -8.26, -0.64) for food. Our study is the first to show that providing information on strictly unconditional, individual health co-benefits can motivate households in high-income countries to adopt mitigation actions
