Selective and Differential Feeding on Marine Prokaryotes by Mucous Mesh Feeders
Microbial mortality impacts the structure of food webs, carbon flow, and the interactions that create dynamic patterns of abundance across gradients in space and time in diverse ecosystems. In the oceans, estimates of microbial mortality by viruses, protists, and small zooplankton do not account fully for observations of loss, suggesting the existence of underappreciated mortality sources. We examined how ubiquitous mucous mesh feeders (i.e. gelatinous zooplankton) could contribute to microbial mortality in the open ocean. We coupled capture of live animals by blue-water diving to sequence-based approaches to measure the enrichment and selectivity of feeding by two coexisting mucous grazer taxa (pteropods and salps) on numerically dominant marine prokaryotes. We show that mucous mesh grazers consume a variety of marine prokaryotes and select between coexisting lineages and similar cell sizes. We show that Prochlorococcus may evade filtration more than other cells and that planktonic archaea are consumed by macrozooplanktonic grazers. Discovery of these feeding relationships identifies a new source of mortality for Earth\u27s dominant marine microbes and alters our understanding of how top-down processes shape microbial community and function

L^2 torsion without the determinant class condition and extended L^2 cohomology
We associate determinant lines to objects of the extended abelian category
built out of a von Neumann category with a trace. Using this we suggest
constructions of the combinatorial and the analytic L^2 torsions which, unlike
the work of the previous authors, requires no additional assumptions; in
particular we do not impose the determinant class condition. The resulting
torsions are elements of the determinant line of the extended L^2 cohomology.
Under the determinant class assumption the L^2 torsions of this paper
specialize to the invariants studied in our previous work. Applying a recent
theorem of D. Burghelea, L. Friedlander and T. Kappeler we obtain a Cheeger -
Muller type theorem stating the equality between the combinatorial and the
analytic L^2 torsions.Comment: 39 page
Orthodontic Bracket Manufacturing Tolerances and Dimensional Differences between Select Self-Ligating Brackets
In all manufacturing processes there are tolerances; however, orthodontic bracket manufacturers seldom state the slot dimensional tolerances. This experiment develops a novel method of analyzing slot profile dimensions using photographs of the slot. Five points are selected along each wall, and lines are fitted to define a trapezoidal slot shape. This investigation measures slot height at the slot's top and bottom, angles between walls, slot taper, and the linearity of each wall. Slot dimensions for 30 upper right central incisor self-ligating stainless steel brackets from three manufacturers were evaluated. Speed brackets have a slot height 2% smaller than the nominal 0.559 mm size and have a slightly convergent taper. In-Ovation brackets have a divergent taper at an average angle of 1.47 degrees. In-Ovation is closest to the nominal value of slot height at the slot base and has the smallest manufacturing tolerances. Damon Q brackets are the most rectangular in shape, with nearly 90-degree corners between the slot bottom and walls. Damon slot height is on average 3% oversized

helpful in applications in quantum optics. Moreover, we derive two new results,
the first is about the approximability of SU(1,1) elements by a finite set of
elementary gates, and the second is about the regularization of group

Parametrizations of Inclusive Cross Sections for Pion Production in Proton-Proton Collisions
Accurate knowledge of cross sections for pion production in proton-proton
collisions finds wide application in particle physics, astrophysics, cosmic ray
physics and space radiation problems, especially in situations where an
incident proton is transported through some medium, and one requires knowledge
of the output particle spectrum given the input spectrum. In such cases
accurate parametrizations of the cross sections are desired. In this paper we
review much of the experimental data and compare to a wide variety of different
cross section parametrizations. In so doing, we provide parametrizations of
neutral and charged pion cross sections which provide a very accurate
description of the experimental data. Lorentz invariant differential cross
sections, spectral distributions and total cross section parametrizations are

Review of Maxillary Expansion Appliance Activation Methods: Engineering and Clinical Perspectives
Objective. Review the reported activation methods of maxillary expansion devices for midpalatal suture separation from an engineering perspective and suggest areas of improvement. Materials and Methods. A literature search of Scopus and PubMed was used to determine current expansion methods. A U.S. and Canadian patent database search was also conducted using patent classification and keywords. Any paper presenting a new method of expansion was included. Results. Expansion methods in use, or patented, can be classified as either a screw- or spring-type, magnetic, or shape memory alloy expansion appliance. Conclusions. Each activation method presented unique advantages and disadvantages from both clinical and engineering perspectives. Areas for improvement still remain and are identified in the paper
Water Quality Impacts of Naturals Riparian Grasses Part 2: Modeling Effects of Channelization on Sediment Trapping
A methodology is developed to determine expected sediment trapping in riparian vegetative filter strips considering channelization of flow. The framework consists of defining the channel network stochastically, with deposition/detachment in each channel being modeled deterministically. The two approaches were then combined to develop a model which could predict expected trapping efficiencies for vegetative filters under known field conditions. The model was then extended to include conditions such as rainfall on the filter so as to make it applicable to generic field situations.
Field and laboratory studies were conducted to collect and estimate data to develop and evaluate the model. sediment concentrations were measured for natural vegetative filters located on a slope of 8.7%, subjected to inflows from upslope bare soil plots. Surface elevations were measured for the filter. Flow networks and channel shapes were defined by applying the digital elevation model to the micro-relief data. Actual distributions and standard fitted distributions for channel flows and channel shapes were developed.
Model evaluation was done for selected values of Manning\u27s n to give predicted filter trapping efficiencies within 2% of the observed, indicating model validity. Sensitivity analysis was conducted using the general model and the fitted probability distributions
