DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING OF A LOW MASS VIBRATORY LUNAR COMPACTOR

    Get PDF
NASA and other agencies are working to return to the moon, with the Artemis Program [1]. As a part of this new effort, an emphasis is being placed on having a sustained presence, building lunar bases and other permanent structures. The development of such infrastructure will require the development of civil engineering structures, and site preparation becomes a necessity. The Planetary Surface Technology Development Laboratory is developing a low mass lunar compactor as part of an autonomous site preparation vehicle in partnership with Colorado School of Mines, funded by NASA’s 2021 Lunar Surface Technology Research grant. The low mass lunar compactor utilized vibrated pins which allow for compaction at depth. This report will discuss the development of this compaction method and hardware through multiple prototype test devices and the relevant results

The Status of the Right to Picket in Washington

The recent decision of the Washington Supreme Court in the case of Sterling Chain Theatres, Incorporated, v. Central Labor Council of Seattle, et al., as to the right to picket, constitutes such a radical departure from the heretofore well-established law of this state, that a retrospection and analysis is essential to a better understanding as to the future solution of this question. In the instant case, the plaintiff sought to restrain as unlawful the acts of members of defendant union of maintaining peaceful patrols marching to and fro with placards signed by the council of all the unions, informing the public that a strike was in progress and to Stay Out. Such men approached no closer than 100 feet to the entrance of the theatre, and were out of the sight of such entrance most of the time. The trial court did not decide upon the limitations of defendants\u27 activities, but rested its decree solely on the finding that Danz v. American Federation of Musicians\u27 Union was res adjudicata to this action. The Supreme Court in affirming the decision of the trial court held such acts are lawful and do not constitute picketing, when the pickets approach no closer than 100 feet, and are out of sight of the entrances most of the time. But each case must turn on its own circumstances, and the limitations placed by the trial court on the activities of the respondents and their agents are, under the circumstances of this case and for whatever reason adopted by the trial court, reasonable

Medicinal Cannabis Use in Sickle Cell Anemia

    Get PDF
Approximately 100,000 Americans suffer from sickle cell anemia (SCA), a severe hereditary form of anemia in which red blood cells can mutate into a sickled shape causing severe pain crises that can lead to ED visits, hospitalization, and negatively impact multiple organ systems. Pain crises greatly impact the quality of life for SCA patients. Living with SCA can be stressful and often affects patients’ mental health, causing anxiety or depression (National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, 2016). Opioids have been a treatment mainstay for the severe pain caused by SCA but the side effects of opioids, plus the risk of dependence, are issues that have led both patients and researchers to consider medicinal cannabis as a treatment option. While there is limited research addressing the treatment of sickle cell pain with cannabis some research does suggest that cannabis could have a beneficial effect on the management of both chronic pain and acute pain (Choo, Feldstein Ewing, & Lovejoy, 2016; Kroenke & Cheville, 2017). The aim of this study is to evaluate the association between medicinal cannabis use and quality of life for individuals with SCA. The primary goal of this pilot study is to gather a cohort of participants and administer a baseline survey that will be used in a larger study. The goal of the larger study is to assess the impact of medicinal cannabis available through Pennsylvania’s Department of Health-approved dispensaries in Philadelphia on the quality of life for individuals with sickle cell anemia (SCA)

Planet Sensitivity from Combined Ground- and Space-based Microlensing Observations

To move one step forward toward a Galactic distribution of planets, we present the first planet sensitivity analysis for microlensing events with simultaneous observations from space and the ground. We present this analysis for two such events, OGLE-2014-BLG-0939 and OGLE-2014-BLG-0124, which both show substantial planet sensitivity even though neither of them reached high magnification. This suggests that an ensemble of low to moderate magnification events can also yield significant planet sensitivity, and therefore probability, for detecting planets. The implications of our results to the ongoing and future space-based microlensing experiments to measure the Galactic distribution of planets are discussed
