Theoretical models for classical Cepheids. VIII. Effects of helium and heavy elements abundance on the Cepheid distance scale
Previous nonlinear fundamental pulsation models for classical Cepheids with
metal content Z <= 0.02 are implemented with new computations at super-solar
metallicity (Z=0.03, 0.04) and selected choices of the helium-to-metal
enrichment ratio DeltaY/Delta Z. On this basis, we show that the location into
the HR diagram of the Cepheid instability strip is dependent on both metal and
helium abundance, moving towards higher effective temperatures with decreasing
the metal content (at fixed Y) or with increasing the helium content (at fixed
Z). The contributions of helium and metals to the predicted Period-Luminosity
and Period-Luminosity-Color relations are discussed, as well as the
implications on the Cepheid distance scale. Based on these new results, we
finally show that the empirical metallicity correction suggested by Cepheid
observations in two fields of the galaxy M101 may be accounted for, provided
that the adopted helium-to-metal enrichment ratio is reasonably high (Delta

Awareness towards Chikungunya virus infection risk by general practitioners in Rome: a questionnaire based survey before the 2017 outbreak
Autochthonous cases of Chikungunya (CHIKV) have been recently detected in Rome. A survey was conduct- ed prior to the 2017 outbreak to assess knowledge, attitude, and practices towards CHIKV infections on 103 randomly selected general practitioners (GPs), practicing in the centre of Rome. Only 24.3% were aware of CHIKV and completed the interview. Among completers, the knowledge of basic elements of CHIKV in- fection was insufficient. Only two thirds of them were able to identify possible CHIKV cases in hypothetical clinical scenarios presented by the interviewer. Our study highlights the need to improve GP knowledge to- wards CHIKV, as a necessary step to establish an efficacious epidemic surveillance
Towards learning free naive bayes nearest neighbor-based domain adaptation
As of today, object categorization algorithms are not able to achieve the level of robustness and generality necessary to work reliably in the real world. Even the most powerful convolutional neural network we can train fails to perform satisfactorily when trained and tested on data from different databases. This issue, known as domain adaptation and/or dataset bias in the literature, is due to a distribution mismatch between data collections. Methods addressing it go from max-margin classifiers to learning how to modify the features and obtain a more robust representation. Recent work showed that by casting the problem into the image-to-class recognition framework, the domain adaptation problem is significantly alleviated [23]. Here we follow this approach, and show how a very simple, learning free Naive Bayes Nearest Neighbor (NBNN)-based domain adaptation algorithm can significantly alleviate the distribution mismatch among source and target data, especially when the number of classes and the number of sources grow. Experiments on standard benchmarks used in the literature show that our approach (a) is competitive with the current state of the art on small scale problems, and (b) achieves the current state of the art as the number of classes and sources grows, with minimal computational requirements. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015
Kink propagation in a two-dimensional curved Josephson junction
We consider the propagation of sine-Gordon kinks in a planar curved strip as
a model of nonlinear wave propagation in curved wave guides. The homogeneous
Neumann transverse boundary conditions, in the curvilinear coordinates, allow
to assume a homogeneous kink solution. Using a simple collective variable
approach based on the kink coordinate, we show that curved regions act as
potential barriers for the wave and determine the threshold velocity for the
kink to cross. The analysis is confirmed by numerical solution of the 2D
