    Civic Contributions: Taxes Paid by Immigrants in the Washington, DC, Metropolitan Area

    This report estimates the taxes paid by immigrants in the Washington, D.C., area in 1999-2000 and documents their demographics, household composition, income, and dispersal across jurisdictions in the region. The findings in this report are based mostly on analysis of 2000 U.S. Census data, because the census provides the most recent comprehensive data that allow disaggregation by country of origin groups and by many of the region's local jurisdictions. The demographic data in the report are updated through 2004 using the U.S. Current Population Survey. We calculate taxes at both the individual level (e.g., income and payroll taxes) and the household level (e.g., property taxes), but aggregate them up to the household level. Throughout the report we refer to households headed by immigrants (whether citizens, legal immigrants, or unauthorized migrants) as "immigrant households" and compare their incomes and tax payments to households headed by native-born U.S. citizens

    In 1997, the National Research Council (NRC) issued a report that specified a joint research agenda for defense and entertainment modeling and simulation. This report showed the excellent opportunities for synergy between the entertainment and defense industries. For years, they have been solving similar problems for very different application areas. While those two communities' opposing cultures have been difficult to reconcile, recent efforts have proven promising. The looming question is whether the military sector can follow the leaping technological pace in the entertainment sector. That pace indicates tremendous growth in the entertainment industry, which will be coupled with continued technological innovation.     Fidelity optimization in distributed virtual environments

    In virtual environment systems, the ultimate goal is delivery of the highest-fidelity user experience possible. This dissertation shows that is possible to increase the scalability of distributed virtual environments (DVEs), in a tractable fashion, through a novel application of optimization techniques. Fidelity is maximized by utilizing the given display and network capacity in an optimal fashion, individually tuned for multiple users, in a manner most appropriate to a specific DVE application. This optimization is accomplished using the QUICK framework for managing the display and request of representations for virtual objects. Ratings of representation Quality, object Importance, and representation Cost are included in model descriptions as special annotations. The QUICK optimization computes the fidelity contribution of a representation by combining these annotations with specifications of user task and platform capability. This dissertation contributes the QUICK optimization algorithms; a software framework for experimentation; and associated general purpose formats for codifying Quality, Importance, Cost, task, and platform capability.     Mapping An Internal-External (I-E) Matrix Using Traditional And Extended Matrix Concepts

    Internal Factor Evaluation (IFE) and External Factor Evaluation (EFE) matrices allow an organization to visualize their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats while a Competitive Profile Matrix (CPM) utilizes critical success factors to allow an organization to compare itself to competitors.  Capps and Glissmeyer (2012) proposed an extension of the EFE and IFE concepts to an External Competitive Profile Matrix (ECPM) and an Internal Competitive Profile Matrix (ICPM) which provides greater insight in understanding the external and internal categories to which an organization must attend.  The authors of this paper extend the observations of Capps and Glissmeyer (2012) by suggesting that visual mapping of the ECPM and ICPM, in a manner similar on the Internal-External (I-E) matrix, would enable greater comparative understanding of the relative strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the respective companies
