    Competing Ground States in Triple-layered Sr4Ru3O10: Verging on Itinerant Ferromagnetism with Critical Fluctuations

    Sr4Ru3O10 is characterized by a sharp metamagnetic transition and ferromagnetic behavior occurring within the basal plane and along the c-axis, respectively. Resistivity at magnetic field, B, exhibits low-frequency quantum oscillations when B||c-axis and large magnetoresistivity accompanied by critical fluctuations driven by the metamagnetism when B^c-axis. The complex behavior evidenced in resistivity, magnetization and specific heat presented is not characteristic of any obvious ground states, and points to an exotic state that shows a delicate balance between fluctuations and order.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figure

    Destruction of the Mott Insulating Ground State of Ca_2RuO_4 by a Structural Transition

    We report a first-order phase transition at T_M=357 K in single crystal Ca_2RuO_4, an isomorph to the superconductor Sr_2RuO_4. The discontinuous decrease in electrical resistivity signals the near destruction of the Mott insulating phase and is triggered by a structural transition from the low temperature orthorhombic to a high temperature tetragonal phase. The magnetic susceptibility, which is temperature dependent but not Curie-like decreases abruptly at TM and becomes less temperature dependent. Unlike most insulator to metal transitions, the system is not magnetically ordered in either phase, though the Mott insulator phase is antiferromagnetic below T_N=110 K.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys.     Single Top Quark Production and Decay at Next-to-leading Order in Hadron Collision

    We present a calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections, with one-scale phase space slicing method, to single top quark production and decay process ppˉ,pp→tbˉ+X→bℓνbˉ+Xp\bar{p},pp\to t\bar{b}+X\to b\ell\nu\bar{b}+X at hadron colliders. Using the helicity amplitude method, the angular correlation of the final state partons and the spin correlation of the top quark are preserved.     Pressure-Induced Insulating State in Ba1-xRExIrO3 (RE = Gd, Eu) Single Crystals

    BaIrO3 is a novel insulator with coexistent weak ferromagnetism, charge and spin density wave. Dilute RE doping for Ba induces a metallic state, whereas application of modest pressure readily restores an insulating state characterized by a three-order-of-magnitude increase of resistivity. Since pressure generally increases orbital overlap and broadens energy bands, a pressure-induced insulating state is not commonplace. The profoundly dissimilar responses of the ground state to light doping and low hydrostatic pressures signal an unusual, delicate interplay between structural and electronic degrees of freedom in BaIrO3

    Medium polarization in asymmetric nuclear matter

    The influence of the core polarization on the effective nuclear interaction of asymmetric nuclear matter is calculated in the framework of the induced interaction theory. The strong isospin dependence of the density and spin density fluctuations is studied along with the interplay between the neutron and proton core polarizations. Moving from symmetric nuclear matter to pure neutron matter the crossover of the induced interaction from attractive to repulsive in the spin singlet state is determined as a function of the isospin imbalance.The density range in which it occurs is also determined. For the spin triplet state the induced interaction turns out to be always repulsive. The implications of the results for the neutron star superfluid phases are shortly discussed.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Orbitally-driven Behavior: Mott Transition, Quantum Oscillations and Colossal Magnetoresistance in Bilayered Ca3Ru2O7

    We report recent transport and thermodynamic experiments over a wide range of temperatures for the Mott-like system Ca3Ru2O7 at high magnetic fields, B, up to 30 T. This work reveals a rich and highly anisotropic phase diagram, where applying B along the a-, b-, and c-axis leads to vastly different behavior. A fully spin-polarized state via a first order metamagnetic transition is obtained for B||a, and colossal magnetoresistance is seen for B||b, and quantum oscillations in the resistivity are observed for B||c, respectively. The interplay of the lattice, orbital and spin degrees of freedom are believed to give rise to this strongly anisotropic behavior.Comment: 26 pages and 8 figure

    Magnetic anisotropy and geometrical frustration in the Ising spin-chain system Sr5Rh4O12

    A structural and thermodynamic study of the newly synthesized single crystal Sr5Rh4O12 is reported. Sr5Rh4O12 consists of a triangular lattice of spin chains running along the c-axis. It is antiferromagnetically ordered below 23 K with the intrachain and interchain coupling being ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM), respectively. There is strong evidence for an Ising character in the interaction and geometrical frustration that causes incomplete long-range AFM order. The isothermal magnetization exhibits two step-like transitions leading to a ferrimagnetic state at 2.4 T and a FM state at 4.8 T, respectively. Sr5Rh4O12 is a unique frustrated spin-chain system ever found in 4d and 5d based materials without a presence of an incomplete 3d-electron shell.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure

    Ti-rich and Cu-poor grain-boundary layers of CaCu3_3Ti4_4O12_{12} detected by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

    Cleaved and polished surfaces of CaCu3_3Ti4_4O12_{12} ceramics have been investigated by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX), respectively. While EDX technique shows the identical CaCu3_3Ti4_4O12_{12} stoichiometry for the two surfaces, XPS indicates that the cleaved surface with grain-boundary layers is remarkably Ti-rich and Cu-poor. The core-level spectrum of Cu 2pp unambiguously shows the existence of monovalent copper only for the cleaved surface. Possible grain-boundary structure and its formation are discussed.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure

    Fluctuations of Spatial Patterns as a Measure of Classical Chaos

    In problems where the temporal evolution of a nonlinear system cannot be followed, a method for studying the fluctuations of spatial patterns has been developed. That method is applied to well-known problems in deterministic chaos (the logistic map and the Lorenz model) to check its effectiveness in characterizing the dynamical behaviors.
