Control of lasing in fully chaotic open microcavities by tailoring the shape factor
We demonstrate experimentally that lasing in a semiconductor microstadium can
be optimized by controlling its shape. Under spatially uniform optical pumping,
the first lasing mode in a GaAs microstadium with large major-to-minor-axis
ratio usually corresponds to a high-quality scar mode consisting of several
unstable periodic orbits. Interference of waves propagating along the
constituent orbits may minimize light leakage at particular major-to-minor-axis
ratio. By making stadium of the optimum shape, we are able to maximize the mode
quality factor and align the mode frequency to the peak of the gain spectrum,
thus minimizing the lasing threshold. This work opens the door to control
chaotic microcavity lasers by tailoring the shape factor
Achieving Effective Innovation Based On TRIZ Technological Evolution
Organised by: Cranfield UniversityThis paper outlines the conception of effective innovation and discusses the method to achieve it. Effective
Innovation is constrained on the path of technological evolution so that the corresponding path must be
detected before conceptual design of the product. The process of products technological evolution is a
technical developing process that the products approach to Ideal Final Result (IFR). During the process, the
sustaining innovation and disruptive innovation carry on alternately. By researching and forecasting potential
techniques using TRIZ technological evolution theory, the effective innovation can be achieved finally.Mori Seiki – The Machine Tool Compan
Competing Ground States in Triple-layered Sr4Ru3O10: Verging on Itinerant Ferromagnetism with Critical Fluctuations
Sr4Ru3O10 is characterized by a sharp metamagnetic transition and
ferromagnetic behavior occurring within the basal plane and along the c-axis,
respectively. Resistivity at magnetic field, B, exhibits low-frequency quantum
oscillations when B||c-axis and large magnetoresistivity accompanied by
critical fluctuations driven by the metamagnetism when B^c-axis. The complex
behavior evidenced in resistivity, magnetization and specific heat presented is
not characteristic of any obvious ground states, and points to an exotic state
that shows a delicate balance between fluctuations and order.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figure
Ti-rich and Cu-poor grain-boundary layers of CaCuTiO detected by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy
Cleaved and polished surfaces of CaCuTiO ceramics have been
investigated by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and energy dispersive
x-ray spectroscopy (EDX), respectively. While EDX technique shows the identical
CaCuTiO stoichiometry for the two surfaces, XPS indicates that
the cleaved surface with grain-boundary layers is remarkably Ti-rich and
Cu-poor. The core-level spectrum of Cu 2 unambiguously shows the existence
of monovalent copper only for the cleaved surface. Possible grain-boundary
structure and its formation are discussed.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
Andreev Edge State on Semi-Infinite Triangular Lattice: Detecting the Pairing Symmetry in Na_0.35CoO_2.yH_2O
We study the Andreev edge state on the semi-infinite triangular lattice with
different pairing symmetries and boundary topologies. We find a rich phase
diagram of zero energy Andreev edge states that is a unique fingerprint of each
of the possible pairing symmetries. We propose to pin down the pairing symmetry
in recently discovered Na_xCoO_2 material by the Fourier-transformed scanning
tunneling spectroscopy for the edge state. A surprisingly rich phase diagram is
found and explained by a general gauge argument and mapping to 1D tight-binding
model. Extensions of this work are discussed at the end.Comment: 4 pages, 1 table, 4 figure
Single Top Quark Production and Decay at Next-to-leading Order in Hadron Collision
We present a calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections, with
one-scale phase space slicing method, to single top quark production and decay
process at hadron colliders.
Using the helicity amplitude method, the angular correlation of the final state
partons and the spin correlation of the top quark are preserved. The effect of
the top quark width is also examined.Comment: 47 pages, 9 figure
Fluctuations of Spatial Patterns as a Measure of Classical Chaos
In problems where the temporal evolution of a nonlinear system cannot be
followed, a method for studying the fluctuations of spatial patterns has been
developed. That method is applied to well-known problems in deterministic chaos
(the logistic map and the Lorenz model) to check its effectiveness in
characterizing the dynamical behaviors. It is found that the indices
are as useful as the Lyapunov exponents in providing a quantitative measure of
chaos.Comment: 10 pages + 7 figures (in ps file), LaTex, Submitted to Phys. Rev.
