    Prevalence and Associated Factors of Elder Mistreatment in a Rural Community in People's Republic of China: A Cross-Sectional Study

    Background: Current knowledge about elder mistreatment is mainly derived from studies done in Western countries, which indicate that this problem is related to risk factors such as a shared living situation, social isolation, disease burden, and caregiver strain. We know little about prevalence and risk factors for elder mistreatment and mistreatment subtypes in rural China where the elder population is the most vulnerable. Methods: In 2010, we conducted a cross-sectional survey among older adults aged 60 or older in three rural communities in Macheng, a city in Hubei province, China. Of 2245 people initially identified, 2039 were available for interview and this was completed in 2000. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data regarding mistreatment and covariates. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors related to elder mistreatment and subtypes of mistreatment. Results: Elder mistreatment was reported by 36.2 % (95 % CI: 34.1%–38.3%) of the participants.     MUI-TARE: Multi-Agent Cooperative Exploration with Unknown Initial Position

    Multi-agent exploration of a bounded 3D environment with unknown initial positions of agents is a challenging problem. It requires quickly exploring the environments as well as robustly merging the sub-maps built by the agents. We take the view that the existing approaches are either aggressive or conservative: Aggressive strategies merge two sub-maps built by different agents together when overlap is detected, which can lead to incorrect merging due to the false-positive detection of the overlap and is thus not robust. Conservative strategies direct one agent to revisit an excessive amount of the historical trajectory of another agent for verification before merging, which can lower the exploration efficiency due to the repeated exploration of the same space. To intelligently balance the robustness of sub-map merging and exploration efficiency, we develop a new approach for lidar-based multi-agent exploration, which can direct one agent to repeat another agent's trajectory in an \emph{adaptive} manner based on the quality indicator of the sub-map merging process. Additionally, our approach extends the recent single-agent hierarchical exploration strategy to multiple agents in a \emph{cooperative} manner by planning for agents with merged sub-maps together to further improve exploration efficiency.     Impact of microRNA polymorphisms on high-dose methotrexate-related hematological toxicities in pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia

    ObjectivesIt is well known that transporter and enzyme genes could be regulated by microRNA (miRNA) at the post-transcriptional level, and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in miRNA, which are involved in the miRNA production and structure, may impact the miRNA expression level and then influence drug transport and metabolism. In this study, we aim to evaluate the association between miRNA polymorphisms and high-dose methotrexate (HD-MTX) hematological toxicities in Chinese pediatric patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).MethodA total of 181 children with ALL were administered with 654 evaluable cycles of HD-MTX. Their hematological toxicities were evaluated according to the National Cancer Institute Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events v5. The association between 15 candidate SNPs of miRNA and hematological toxicities (leukopenia, anemia, and thrombocytopenia) was analyzed using Fisher's exact test. Further multiple backward logistic regression analysis was used to explore the independent risk factors for grade 3/4 hematological toxicities.ResultRs2114358 G>A in pre-hsa-miR-1206 was related to HD-MTX-related grade 3/4 leukopenia after multiple logistic regression [GA + AA vs. GG: odds ratio (OR): 2.308, 95% CI: 1.219–4.372, P = 0.010], and rs56103835 T > C in pre-hsa-mir-323b was associated with HD-MTX-related grade 3/4 anemia (TT + TC vs. CC: OR: 0.360, 95% CI: 0.239–0.541, P = 0.000); none of the SNPs were significantly associated with grade 3/4 thrombocytopenia. Bioinformatics tools predicted that rs2114358 G>A and rs56103835 T>C would impact the secondary structure of pre-miR-1206 and pre-miR-323b, respectively, and then probably influence the expression level of mature miRNAs and their target genes.ConclusionRs2114358 G>A and rs56103835 T>C polymorphism may potentially influence HD-MTX-related hematological toxicities, which may serve as candidate clinical biomarkers to predict grade 3/4 hematological toxicities in pediatric patients with ALL

    Exposure to arsenic during pregnancy and newborn mitochondrial DNA copy number: A birth cohort study in Wuhan, China

However, little is known about the impact of maternal As exposure on newborn mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNAcn), which may lie on the pathway linking As exposure to adverse health impacts. Objectives: We aimed to explore whether maternal As exposure was associated with newborn mtDNAcn. Methods: We conducted a birth cohort study of 762 mother-infant pairs in Wuhan, China, 2013-2015. Cord blood mtDNAcn was determined using qPCR. Maternal urinary As levels in each trimester were quantified by ICP-MS. Multiple informant models were used to examine the associations of repeated urinary As levels with cord blood mtDNAcn. Results: The median urinary As levels in the first, second, and third trimesters were 17.2 g/L, 16.0 g/L and 17.0 g/L respectively. In the multivariate model, each doubling increase in the first-trimester urinary As level was associated with a 6.6% (95% CI: -12.4%, -0.5%) decrease in cord blood mtDNAcn. The highest versus lowest quintile of first-trimester urinary As level was related to a 19.0% (95% CI: -32.9%, -2.2%) lower cord blood mtDNAcn. There was significant association of urinary As levels in the second and third trimesters with cord blood mtDNAcn. The inverse relationship between first-trimester urinary As level and cord blood mtDNAcn was more pronounced among female infants. Conclusions: First-trimester As exposure was associated with decreased cord blood mtDNAcn. The potential health impacts of decreased mtDNAcn in early life need to be further clarified

    R-SNARE Homolog MoSec22 Is Required for Conidiogenesis, Cell Wall Integrity, and Pathogenesis of Magnaporthe oryzae

    Soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor attachment protein receptor (SNARE) proteins mediate intracellular vesicle fusion, which is an essential cellular process of the eukaryotic cells. To investigate the role of SNARE proteins in the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae, MoSec22, an ortholog of Saccharomyces cerevisiae SNARE protein Sec22, was identified and the MoSEC22 gene disrupted. MoSec22 restored a S. cerevisiae sec22 mutant in resistance to cell wall perturbing agents, and the ΔMosec22 mutant also exhibited defects in mycelial growth, conidial production, and infection of the host plant. Treatment with oxidative stress inducers indicated a breach in cell wall integrity, and staining and quantification assays suggested abnormal chitin deposition on the lateral walls of hyphae of the ΔMosec22 mutant. Furthermore, hypersensitivity to the oxidative stress correlates with the reduced expression of the extracellular enzymes peroxidases and laccases. Our study thus provides new evidence on the conserved function of Sec22 among fungal organisms and indicates that MoSec22 has a role in maintaining cell wall integrity affecting the growth, morphogenesis, and virulence of M. oryzae

    Implicit-explicit difference schemes for nonlinear fractional differential equations with nonsmooth solutions

    We propose second-order implicit-explicit (IMEX) time-stepping schemes for nonlinear fractional differential equations with fractional order 0 β <1. From the known structure of the nonsmooth solution and by introducing corresponding correction terms, we can obtain uniformly second-order accuracy from these schemes. We prove the convergence and linear stability of the proposed schemes. Numerical examples illustrate the flexibility and efficiency of the IMEX schemes and show that they are effective for nonlinear and multirate fractional differential systems as well as multiterm fractional differential systems with nonsmooth solutions

    Study on the Influence of Slope on Pollutant Diffusion Characteristics during Tunnel Construction Period

    . The relative elevation of the beginning and end of the Jianyuan Expressway exceed 1000m. In order to overcome the impact of the large slope on traffic safety, a spiral tunnel was designed in the middle of the expressway. The tunnel length is 3970m and the radius is 710~730m with its slope being up to 2.08%. The occurrence of large slope has a great impact on ventilation and smoke during tunnel construction, but little research has been done before. In this paper, numerical simulation and field test were used to study the effect of slope on the diffusion characteristics of pollutants. It was found that as the slope increased, the wind speed and CO dilution rate also increased. However, the dust dilution characteristics were different. Especially in the case of the downward tunnel, the effect of wind speed on the sedimentation rate of dust was minimal. Simply increasing the wind speed cannot speed up the dust reduction rate
