Fake View Analytics in Online Video Services
Online video-on-demand(VoD) services invariably maintain a view count for
each video they serve, and it has become an important currency for various
stakeholders, from viewers, to content owners, advertizers, and the online
service providers themselves. There is often significant financial incentive to
use a robot (or a botnet) to artificially create fake views. How can we detect
the fake views? Can we detect them (and stop them) using online algorithms as
they occur? What is the extent of fake views with current VoD service
providers? These are the questions we study in the paper. We develop some
algorithms and show that they are quite effective for this problem.Comment: 25 pages, 15 figure
Current-Voltage Characteristics of Long-Channel Nanobundle Thin-Film Transistors: A Bottom-up Perspective
By generalizing the classical linear response theory of stick percolation to
nonlinear regime, we find that the drain current of a Nanobundle Thin Film
Transistor (NB-TFT) is described under a rather general set of conditions by a
universal scaling formula ID = A/LS g(LS/LC, rho_S * LS * LS) f(VG, VD), where
A is a technology-specific constant, g is function of geometrical factors like
stick length (LS), channel length (LC), and stick density (rho_S) and f is a
function of drain (VD) and gate (VG) biasing conditions. This scaling formula
implies that the measurement of full I-V characteristics of a single NB-TFT is
sufficient to predict the performance characteristics of any other transistor
with arbitrary geometrical parameters and biasing conditions
High-temperature weak ferromagnetism on the verge of a metallic state: Impact of dilute Sr-doping on BaIrO3
The 5d-electron based BaIrO3 is a nonmetallic weak ferromagnet with a Curie
temperature at Tc=175 K. Its largely extended orbitals generate strong
electron-lattice coupling, and magnetism and electronic structure are thus
critically linked to the lattice degree of freedom. Here we report results of
our transport and magnetic study on slightly Sr doped BaIrO3. It is found that
dilute Sr-doping drastically suppresses Tc, and instantaneously leads to a
nonmetal-metal transition at high temperatures. All results highlight the
instability of the ground state and the subtle relation between magnetic
ordering and electron mobility. It is clear that BaIrO3 along with very few
other systems represents a class of materials where the magnetic and transport
properties can effectively be tuned by slight alterations in lattice
parameters
Destruction of the Mott Insulating Ground State of Ca_2RuO_4 by a Structural Transition
We report a first-order phase transition at T_M=357 K in single crystal
Ca_2RuO_4, an isomorph to the superconductor Sr_2RuO_4. The discontinuous
decrease in electrical resistivity signals the near destruction of the Mott
insulating phase and is triggered by a structural transition from the low
temperature orthorhombic to a high temperature tetragonal phase. The magnetic
susceptibility, which is temperature dependent but not Curie-like decreases
abruptly at TM and becomes less temperature dependent. Unlike most insulator to
metal transitions, the system is not magnetically ordered in either phase,
though the Mott insulator phase is antiferromagnetic below T_N=110 K.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. B (Rapid Communications
Eliciting the low-activity aldehyde dehydrogenase Asian phenotype by an antisense mechanism results in an aversion to ethanol.
A mutation in the gene encoding for the liver mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH2-2), present in some Asian populations, lowers or abolishes the activity of this enzyme and results in elevations in blood acetaldehyde upon ethanol consumption, a phenotype that greatly protects against alcohol abuse and alcoholism. We have determined whether the administration of antisense phosphorothioate oligonucleotides (ASOs) can mimic the low-activity ALDH2-2 Asian phenotype. Rat hepatoma cells incubated for 24 h with an antisense oligonucleotide (ASO-9) showed reductions in ALDH2 mRNA levels of 85% and ALDH2 (half-life of 22 h) activity of 55% equivalent to a \u3e90% inhibition in ALDH2 synthesis. Glutamate dehydrogenase mRNA and activity remained unchanged. Base mismatches in the oligonucleotide rendered ASO-9 virtually inactive, confirming an antisense effect. Administration of ASO-9 (20 mg/kg/day for 4 d) to rats resulted in a 50% reduction in liver ALDH2 mRNA, a 40% inhibition in ALDH2 activity, and a fourfold (P \u3c 0.001) increase in circulating plasma acetaldehyde levels after ethanol (1 g/kg) administration. Administration of ASO-9 to rats by osmotic pumps led to an aversion (-61%, P \u3c 0.02) to ethanol. These studies provide a proof of principle that specific inhibition of gene expression can be used to mimic the protective effects afforded by the ALDH2-2 phenotype
Sequential drain amylase to guide drain removal following pancreatectomy
BACKGROUND:
Although used as criterion for early drain removal, postoperative day (POD) 1 drain fluid amylase (DFA) ≤ 5000 U/L has low negative predictive value for clinically relevant postoperative pancreatic fistula (CR-POPF). It was hypothesized that POD3 DFA ≤ 350 could provide further information to guide early drain removal.
METHODS:
Data from a pancreas surgery consortium database for pancreatoduodenectomy and distal pancreatectomy patients were analyzed retrospectively. Those patients without drains or POD 1 and 3 DFA data were excluded. Patients with POD1 DFA ≤ 5000 were divided into groups based on POD3 DFA: Group A (≤350) and Group B (>350). Operative characteristics and 60-day outcomes were compared using chi-square test.
RESULTS:
Among 687 patients in the database, all data were available for 380. Fifty-five (14.5%) had a POD1 DFA > 5000. Among 325 with POD1 DFA ≤ 5000, 254 (78.2%) were in Group A and 71 (21.8%) in Group B. Complications (35 (49.3%) vs 87 (34.4%); p = 0.021) and CR-POPF (13 (18.3%) vs 10 (3.9%); p < 0.001) were more frequent in Group B.
CONCLUSIONS:
In patients with POD1 DFA ≤ 5000, POD3 DFA ≤ 350 may be a practical test to guide safe early drain removal. Further prospective testing may be useful
VALES: IV. Exploring the transition of star formation efficiencies between normal and starburst galaxies using APEX/SEPIA Band-5 and ALMA at low redshift
In this work we present new APEX/SEPIA Band-5 observations targeting the CO
() emission line of 24 Herschel-detected galaxies at .
Combining this sample {with} our recent new Valpara\'iso ALMA Line Emission
Survey (VALES), we investigate the star formation efficiencies (SFEs =
SFR/) of galaxies at low redshift. We find the SFE of our sample
bridges the gap between normal star-forming galaxies and Ultra-Luminous
Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs), which are thought to be triggered by different star
formation modes. Considering the as the SFR and the
ratio, our data show a continuous and smooth increment as a function of
infrared luminosity (or star formation rate) with a scatter about 0.5 dex,
instead of a steep jump with a bimodal behaviour. This result is due to the use
of a sample with a much larger range of sSFR/sSFR using LIRGs, with
luminosities covering the range between normal and ULIRGs. We conclude that the
main parameters controlling the scatter of the SFE in star-forming galaxies are
the systematic uncertainty of the conversion factor, the gas
