The distribution of Tanypteryx hageni (Odonata: Petaluridae) in British Columbia

Get PDF
In British Columbia the petalurid dragonfly Tanypteryx hageni (Selys) is considered to be rare. A record in 1977 extends its known range almost to 51°N latitude. The record also disputes the belief that T. hageni normally is restricted to subalpine habitats. In the northern parts of its range it appears to occur naturally at sea level

Robber flies (Diptera: Asilidae) new to Canada, British Columbia, Yukon and the Northwest Territories with notes on distribution and habitat

Twenty-one species of robber flies from British Columbia, not previously reported in Canada, are listed. TIlree genera are also new: CalliniclIs, Coleomyia, and Megaphorus. Two additional genera (Stichopogon and Andrenosoma) and 12 species already known from Canada are reported for the first time from British Columbia. Sixteen species new to the Yukon, and seven to the Northwest Territories are also recorded. These records update the list of Asilidae for this region last published by Stone and Olhcrs in 1965.Key words: Diptera; Asilidae; British Columbia; Yukon; Northwest Territories; distribution; statu

A review of the distribution and natural history of Apiocera barri and Nemomydas pantherinus (Diptera: Apioceridae and Mydidae), two rare asiloid flies from the southern Interior of British Columbia

Canada's only apiocerid fly, Apiocera barri Cazier, and sole westem mydid fly, Nemamydas pantherinus (Gerstäcker), (Diptera: Apioceridae and Mydidae) are rare species practically restricted to the antelope-brush, Purshia tridentata (Pursh) de Candolle (Rosaceae), steppe of the southern Okanagan Valley of British Columbia. Some aspects of their natural history are outlined. The distributional records of the species are recorded and mapped in the context of antelope-brush steppe in the Okanagan Valley. This ecosystem has been reduced to one-third of the area occupied in the 1860s. Because these two flies are conspicuous, rare, and dependent to a large extent on antelopebrush steppe, they are good candidates for further study in the federal and provincial efforts to conserve this threatened ecosystem and its many rare species

Recent range expansion of the Praying Mantis, Mantis religiosa Linnaeus (Mantodeaz Mantidae), in British Columbia

The Praying Mantis, Mantis religiosa, was introduced into eastern North America in the 1890s and is now a common species throughout much of the eastern United States and southern Ontario and Quebec. It was introduced from Ontario into the southern interior of British Columbia to control grasshoppers in 1937 and 1938. These introductions became established only in the southern Okanagan Valley where populations have persisted from Okanagan Falls south to Osoyoos. Since the late 1990s, the species’ range has expanded from the South Okanagan north at least to Kamloops and east to Nelson. In addition, in the core of its traditional British Columbia range, the South Okanagan, this mantid has become more commonly encountered during the past decade. M. religiosa has also been collected on Vancouver Island. Specimen, photograph and sight records that document this change in status are listed and discussed and a distribution map is included. Characters used to distinguish M. religiosa from the native Ground Mantis, Litaneutria minor, and the exotic Chinese Mantis, Tenodera aridifolia sinensis, which is available commerciallv as a biocontrol agent are summarized
