    Minority Student Success in Nursing Education

    All minority populations are underrepresented in nursing when compared to the general population. Minority and nontraditional nursing students have lower retention and persistence rates as, well as lower NCLEX-RN® pass rates than white non-Hispanic nursing students. A variety of methods have been used to predict nursing student success and numerous interventions to improve student success have been reported. A review of these strategies reveals the necessity of thoughtful curricular and program approaches to increase the rate of success among nursing students. The Caring Imperative is proposed as a theoretical basis for these approaches

    Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and Help-Seeking: The Experiences of African American Male Survivors

    Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious worldwide problem and a deliberate violation of human rights. Men from all ethnicities are physically, psychologically, and mentally affected by IPV. In the Unites States, approximately 835,000 men are abused by an intimate partner. Although there are higher incidences of IPV in the African American community and lower rates of help-seeking especially among males, there is a scarcity of studies addressing the help-seeking behavior of African American male IPV survivors. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of African American male survivors of IPV and their help-seeking behaviors. The sample for this study consisted of six African American men who are survivors of female perpetrated IPV. Social learning theory, which explains how behavior including help-seeking behavior is learned, guided this study. Participants were interviewed face to face and via Skype using semi structured interviews. The data from the interviews were analyzed and coded using interpretative phenomenological analysis. The findings revealed that African American male survivors of IPV face numerous barriers that dehumanized them; however, they recognized the importance of getting help. The findings provide a better understanding of African American men\u27s experiences and help-seeking behaviors. Thus, programs that are specific to their needs can be implemented. Furthermore, the results could prompt law enforcement administration to provide better training of patrol officers who first respond to family disputes

    The history of written language disorders: reexamining Pitres’ case (1884) of pure agraphia

    The first clinical description of pure agraphia was reported by the French neurologist Pitres in 1884. Pitres used the case study evidence to argue for modality-specific memory representations and the localization of writing. This article reviews Pitres’s contribution to the study of acquired writing disorders, the components of writing models and the cerebral localization which subserve writing, in light of the views entertained by his contemporaries and current authors. Although numerous cases have been reported throughout this century, the view that writing can be impaired while other language functions and motor activities remain intact is still challenged

    Changes in cortical and striatal neurons predict behavioral and electrophysiological abnormalities in a transgenic murine model of Huntington\u27s disease

    Neurons in Huntington\u27s disease exhibit selective morphological and subcellular alterations in the striatum and cortex. The link between these neuronal changes and behavioral abnormalities is unclear. We investigated relationships between essential neuronal changes that predict motor impairment and possible involvement of the corticostriatal pathway in developing behavioral phenotypes. We therefore generated heterozygote mice expressing the N-terminal one-third of huntingtin with normal (CT18) or expanded (HD46, HD100) glutamine repeats. The HD mice exhibited motor deficits between 3 and 10 months. The age of onset depended on an expanded polyglutamine length; phenotype severity correlated with increasing age. Neuronal changes in the striatum (nuclear inclusions) preceded the onset of phenotype, whereas cortical changes, especially the accumulation of huntingtin in the nucleus and cytoplasm and the appearance of dysmorphic dendrites, predicted the onset and severity of behavioral deficits. Striatal neurons in the HD mice displayed altered responses to cortical stimulation and to activation by the excitotoxic agent NMDA. Application of NMDA increased intracellular Ca(2+) levels in HD100 neurons compared with wild-type neurons. Results suggest that motor deficits in Huntington\u27s disease arise from cumulative morphological and physiological changes in neurons that impair corticostriatal circuitry

    Tracking human multiple myeloma xenografts in NOD-Rag-1/IL-2 receptor gamma chain-null mice with the novel biomarker AKAP-4

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Multiple myeloma (MM) is a fatal malignancy ranking second in prevalence among hematological tumors. Continuous efforts are being made to develop innovative and more effective treatments. The preclinical evaluation of new therapies relies on the use of murine models of the disease.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Here we describe a new MM animal model in NOD-Rag1null IL2rgnull (NRG) mice that supports the engraftment of cell lines and primary MM cells that can be tracked with the tumor antigen, AKAP-4.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Human MM cell lines, U266 and H929, and primary MM cells were successfully engrafted in NRG mice after intravenous administration, and were found in the bone marrow, blood and spleen of tumor-challenged animals. The AKAP-4 expression pattern was similar to that of known MM markers, such as paraproteins, CD38 and CD45.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We developed for the first time a murine model allowing for the growth of both MM cell lines and primary cells in multifocal sites, thus mimicking the disease seen in patients. Additionally, we validated the use of AKAP-4 antigen to track tumor growth <it>in vivo </it>and to specifically identify MM cells in mouse tissues. We expect that our model will significantly improve the pre-clinical evaluation of new anti-myeloma therapies.</p
