    Bond Strength of Gold Alloys Laser Welded to Cobalt-Chromium Alloy

    The objective of this study was to investigate the joint properties between cast gold alloys and Co-Cr alloy laser-welded by Nd:YAG laser. Cast plates were fabricated from three types of gold alloys (Type IV, Type II and low-gold) and a Co-Cr alloy. Each gold alloy was laser-welded to Co-Cr using a dental laser-welding machine. Homogeneously-welded and non-welded control specimens were also prepared. Tensile testing was conducted and data were statistically analyzed using ANOVA. The homogeneously-welded groups showed inferior fracture load compared to corresponding control groups, except for Co-Cr. In the specimens welded heterogeneously to Co-Cr, Type IV was the greatest, followed by low-gold and Type II. There was no statistical difference (P<0.05) in fracture load between Type II control and that welded to Co-Cr. Higher elongations were obtained for Type II in all conditions, whereas the lowest elongation occurred for low-gold welded to Co-Cr. This study indicated that, of the three gold alloys tested, the Type IV gold alloy was the most suitable alloy for laser-welding to Co-Cr

    Mechanoresponsive self‐assembled perylene bisimide films

    In this work, self-assembled amino-acid appended perylene bisimides (PBIs) have been studied that when processed into thin films change their resistivity in response to being bent. The PBIs assemble into structures in water and form thin films upon drying. These normally delicate thin films can be tolerant to bending, depending on the aggregates they form. Furthermore, the films then reversibly change their resistivity in response to this mechanical stimulus. This change is proportional to the degree of bending of the film giving them the potential to be used quantitatively to measure mechanical movement, such as in wearable devices

    Biofabrication: an overview of the approaches used for printing of living cells

    The development of cell printing is vital for establishing biofabrication approaches as clinically relevant tools. Achieving this requires bio-inks which must not only be easily printable, but also allow controllable and reproducible printing of cells. This review outlines the general principles and current progress and compares the advantages and challenges for the most widely used biofabrication techniques for printing cells: extrusion, laser, microvalve, inkjet and tissue fragment printing. It is expected that significant advances in cell printing will result from synergistic combinations of these techniques and lead to optimised resolution, throughput and the overall complexity of printed constructs

    Insights into electrochemiluminescent enhancement through electrode surface modification

    The electrochemiluminescent (ECL) properties of a luminescent metal centre, [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+), can be significantly modulated through its electronic interaction with neighbouring centres and the polymer backbone used to confine it on an electrode surface. From the perspective of ECL based sensing devices, an increase in the ECL efficiency of a metallopolymer film can result in enhanced sensor sensitivity and selectivity. This work probes the ECL properties of both conjugated, [Ru(bpy)(2)(PPyBBIM)(10)](2+), and non-conjugated, [Ru(bpy)(2)(PVP)(10)](2+), ruthenium based metallopolymer films based on a well documented reaction with sodium oxalate, where bpy is 2,2'-bipyridyl, PPYBBIM is poly[2-(2-pyridyl)-bibenzimidazole] and PVP is poly(4-vinylpyridine). Through a combination of ground state electrochemical studies and ECL measurements, the ECL efficiency for each film is determined. This study reveals that despite a dramatic influence in charge transfer rates between metal centres, as observed for the conducting polymer, mediated through the conducting polymer backbone, a corresponding increase in ECL efficiency is not always observed. The degree of communication between the adjacent excited state metal centres are an important consideration for ECL enhancement however self quenching, luminophore distribution and film porosity must also be considered

    Application of a new screening model to thermonuclear reactions of the rp process

    A new screening model for astrophysical thermonuclear reactions was derived recently which improved Salpeter's weak-screening one. In the present work we prove that the new model can also give very reliable screening enhancement factors (SEFs) when applied to the rp process. According to the results of the new model, which agree well with Mitler's SEFs, the screened rp reaction rates can be, at most, twice as fast as the unscreened ones.Comment: 8 RevTex pages + 7 ps figures.
