    Nonlinear analysis of spacecraft thermal models

    We study the differential equations of lumped-parameter models of spacecraft thermal control. Firstly, we consider a satellite model consisting of two isothermal parts (nodes): an outer part that absorbs heat from the environment as radiation of various types and radiates heat as a black-body, and an inner part that just dissipates heat at a constant rate. The resulting system of two nonlinear ordinary differential equations for the satellite's temperatures is analyzed with various methods, which prove that the temperatures approach a steady state if the heat input is constant, whereas they approach a limit cycle if it varies periodically. Secondly, we generalize those methods to study a many-node thermal model of a spacecraft: this model also has a stable steady state under constant heat inputs that becomes a limit cycle if the inputs vary periodically. Finally, we propose new numerical analyses of spacecraft thermal models based on our results, to complement the analyses normally carried out with commercial software packages.Comment: 29 pages, 4 figure

    Spontaneous Magnetization of the O(3) Ferromagnet at Low Temperatures

    We investigate the low-temperature behavior of ferromagnets with a spontaneously broken symmetry O(3) →\to O(2). The analysis is performed within the perspective of nonrelativistic effective Lagrangians, where the dynamics of the system is formulated in terms of Goldstone bosons. Unlike in a Lorentz-invariant framework (chiral perturbation theory), where loop graphs are suppressed by two powers of momentum, loops involving ferromagnetic spin waves are suppressed by three momentum powers. The leading coefficients of the low-temperature expansion for the partition function are calculated up to order p10p^{10}. In agreement with Dyson's pioneering microscopic analysis of the cubic ferromagnet, we find that, in the spontaneous magnetization, the magnon-magnon interaction starts manifesting itself only at order T4T^4. The striking difference with respect to the low-temperature properties of the O(3) antiferromagnet is discussed from a unified point of view, relying on the effective Lagrangian technique.Comment: 23 pages, 4 figure

    ATP-binding cassette (ABC), ATP-dependent transporters are a large superfamily of proteins that include the multidrug resistance proteins, P-glycoprotein and MRP (multidrug resistance protein). The ARA (anthracycline resistance-associated) gene that codes for a putative member of the ABC transporters has recently been cloned and shown to have high sequence homology to the gene for MRP. We have previously shown MRP to be deleted in a subset of inv(16) leukemic patients. The deletion of MRP was associated with an improved patient survival compared with inv(16) patients who did not have such a deletion. In this study, the ARA gene is mapped to 16p13.1, in the same physical interval as the inv(16) short-arm breakpoint. It is shown to be situated proximal to both MYH11, the gene involved in the primary breakpoint on the short arm of the inv(16), and MRP. A YAC clone has been isolated containing both MRP and ARA. FISH analysis of metaphase chromosomes from inv(16) patients has established the gene order as telomere-MYH11-MRP-ARA-centromere and demonstrated that both ARA and MRP are deleted in a subgroup of the inv(16) leukemias. ARA and MRP are both shown to be expressed in normal hematopoietic precursors including CD34(+) cells.     New insights into ancient environments using dental characters in Australian Cenozoic lungfish

    Environmentally-related wear conditions and pathologies affecting the dentition of fossil lungfish from freshwater deposits in Australia have been analysed and compared with similar changes in the dentition of the living Australian lungfish, Neoceratodus forsteri. Fossil populations from the Namba, Etadunna, Wipajiri and Katipiri formations in central Australia, and the Carl Creek Limestone and the Camfield beds in northern Australia were assessed. Tooth plates from populations of living lungfish from the Brisbane River and Enoggera Reservoir in southeast Queensland were analysed for comparison. Tooth plates were measured to determine the numbers of different age groups in each population. They were assessed for abrasion, attrition, spur and step wear, erosion and caries, and for trauma and pathological conditions such as malocclusion, hyperplasia, abscesses, osteopenia and parasitic damage. All of these conditions are related to the environment where the fish lived, are found in living members of the group, and can be compared directly with those of fossil relatives. The results suggest that some of the fossil populations were at risk before climatic changes late in the Cainozoic destroyed their habitats. Some fossil lungfish populations, such as those of the Wipajiri Formation, exhibit active spawning and recruitment, good growth rates and a low incidence of disease and environmentally related damage to the tooth plates. Others, like those of the Katipiri and Namba Formations, include no young, and the adult fish were ageing and show environmentally-related damage to the dentition. Etadunna lungfish had active recruitment, but the tooth plates show a high incidence of attrition and caries. Riversleigh lungfish were actively spawning but did not grow large. Tooth plates from this latter deposit have a high incidence of pathological conditions. Fish from the Camfield Beds, where food was severely limiting, had little serious pathology but high levels of caries. Pathologies among living lungfish are common, but fossil fish were comparatively healthy, with few serious dental problems. Information from studies of fossil lungfish confirms that conservation of the few living species of lungfish depends on the maintenance of clean environments that provide adequate supplies of food and suitable sites for spawning and for the growth of young fish
