Quantitative Analysis of Endocytosis of Macrophage Growth Factor Receptor by Molecular Imaging

Endocytosis is a critical cellular process responsible for nutrient uptake, sampling the environment, and cellular signaling. Endocytosis of growth factor receptors is an important step in the regulation of receptor signaling functions. The macrophage growth factor receptor controls growth and differentiation of macrophages, however, the pathway by which the receptor is internalized is not well understood. The analysis showed that for the first time, knockout of endophilin A2 decreases the internalization of macrophage growth factor receptor in primary bone marrow macrophages. This shows that fast endophilin-mediated endocytosis plays a role in the control of the amount of growth factor receptors internalized in macrophages

Examining the Relationship between Parental Educational Expectations and a Community-Based Children’s Savings Account Program

Children’s Savings Account (CSA) program and parents’ educational expectations for their children. We examine survey data collected as part of the rollout and implementation of The Promise Indiana CSA program. Although results differ by parental income and education, results using the full sample suggest that parents are more likely to expect their elementary school-age children to attend college if they have a 529 account or were exposed to the additional aspects of the Promise Indiana program (i.e., the marketing campaign, college and career classroom activities, information about engaging champions, trip to a University, and the opportunity to enroll into The Promise). Parents who were both exposed to the additional aspects of the Promise Indiana program and have a 529 account are over three times more likely to expect their child to attend college than others, increasing to 13 times more likely among parents with no college education. Overall, results suggest a community-based CSA program – Promise Indiana – is associated with nontrivial benefits for families

What is art historical study and how it should be carried out are fundamental questions the exhibition Method and Meaning: Selections from the Gettysburg College Collection intends to answer. This student-curated exhibition is an exciting academic endeavor of seven students of art history majors and minors in the Art History Methods course. The seven student curators are Shannon Callahan, Ashlie Cantele, Maura D’Amico, Xiyang Duan, Devin Garnick, Allison Gross and Emily Zbehlik. As part of the class assignment, this exhibition allows the students to explore various art history methods on individual case studies. The selection of the works in the exhibition reflects a wide array of student research interests including an example of 18th century Chinese jade chime stone, jade and bronze replicas of ancient Chinese bronze vessels, a piece of early 20th century Chinese porcelain, oil paintings by Pennsylvania Impressionist painter Fern Coppedge, prints by Salvador Dalí and by German artist Käthe Kollwitz, and an early 20th century wood block print by Japanese artist Kawase Hasui. Recovery Capital, Mental Health and Substance Use among Individuals Initiating Office-Based Buprenorphine Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder

Recovery capital refers to the internal and external resources available to support an individual in their recovery from substance use disorders. Using data from an ongoing trial, the current study examined recovery capital among 225 individuals initiating office-based buprenorphine treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD) at Federally Qualified Health Centers in the mid-Atlantic region. At baseline, participants completed the Brief Assessment of Recovery Capital-10 (BARC-10), a validated measure assessing the 4 major domains of recovery capital and completed a urine toxicology screening. Participants reported BARC-10 scores of 49.22 on average (SD = 8.14). Average scores were highest for the item “I take full responsibility for my actions,” (M = 5.77, SD = .52), and lowest for “I am proud of the community I live in and feel a part of it” (M = 4.07, SD = 1.73). Lower recovery capital scores were associated with providing a urine screen suggestive of substance use, r(224) = -.16, p \u3c .05 and reporting depression (B = -.06, p = .001) or anxiety (B = -.05, p \u3c .05) in the past 30 days. By screening for recovery capital in individuals with OUD, providers may be able to more effectively tailor individuals’ behavioral treatment plans to positively impact their treatment outcomes

Nanophotonic design principles for ultrahigh efficiency photovoltaics

To date, solar-cell efficiencies have remained well below the thermodynamic limits. However new nanophotonic and microphotonic approaches to light management that systematically minimize thermodynamic losses can enable ultrahigh efficiencies previously considered to be out of reach

Extremely broadband ultralight thermally emissive metasurfaces

We report the design, fabrication and characterization of ultralight highly emissive metaphotonic structures with record-low mass/area that emit thermal radiation efficiently over a broad spectral (2 to 35 microns) and angular (0-60 degrees) range. The structures comprise one to three pairs of alternating nanometer-scale metallic and dielectric layers, and have measured effective 300 K hemispherical emissivities of 0.7 to 0.9. To our knowledge, these structures, which are all subwavelength in thickness are the lightest reported metasurfaces with comparable infrared emissivity. The superior optical properties, together with their mechanical flexibility, low outgassing, and low areal mass, suggest that these metasurfaces are candidates for thermal management in applications demanding of ultralight flexible structures, including aerospace applications, ultralight photovoltaics, lightweight flexible electronics, and textiles for thermal insulation

A Qualitative Study of Transgender Women and Cisgender Men Living Together in Two Recovery Homes

Oxford Houses (OH) are a peer-run sober living homes that are the largest network of recovery homes with over 2,000 in the US. They are self-run without any professional staff. The current study focused on better understanding the facilitators and barriers to OH entry for transgender individuals. The study explored ways in which transgender people found entry into the OHs and the experiences of transgender residents in OHs in comparison to cisgender residents

Understanding and Evaluating Quality of Life for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities: A Northwestern Vermont Population Study

Introduction There are 7-8 million individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities living in the US. • 91,795 of this population lives in Vermont • Historically marginalized and isolated community • Socioeconomic, health-related, and emotional burden • Public health-related disparity Champlain Community Services (CCS): non-profit service provider and coordinator for 86 persons with intellectual disabilities in Northwestern Vermont Objectives: • Develop and apply measures to better understand and evaluate quality of life in the population CCS serves. • Recommend improvement to CCS data collection and evaluation methods. • Provide a basis for future recommendations to CCS services that are aligned to the needs of consumers.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/comphp_gallery/1275/thumbnail.jp

Prevalence and predictors of suicidality among adults initiating office-based buprenorphine.

BACKGROUND: Individuals who have substance use disorders may have an elevated risk of suicidality. This study sought to examine the prevalence of, and identify factors associated with, suicidality in adults with opioid use disorder (OUD) initiating office-based buprenorphine treatment. METHODS: Individuals were eligible to participate if they had OUD and had initiated treatment in the past month. Participants (n = 244) completed a semi-structured interview using the Addiction Severity Index-Lite. RESULTS: At baseline, 37.70% of participants reported significant thoughts of suicide over their lifetime and 27.46% reported suicidal attempts over their lifetime. Logistic regression analyses were used to identify predictors of lifetime suicidal thoughts and attempts. A history of physical abuse (OR = 4.31, p \u3c .001), having chronic pain-related conditions (OR = 3.28, p \u3c .001), a history of depression (OR = 3.30, p = .001) or anxiety (OR = 7.47, p = .001), and Latino/a/x ethnicity (OR = 2.66, p = .01) were associated with an increased risk of lifetime suicidal thoughts. A history of sexual abuse (OR = 2.89, p = .01), Latino/a/x ethnicity (OR = 4.01, p \u3c .001), a history of depression (OR = 4.03, p = .001) or anxiety (OR = 15.65, p = .007) and having a chronic pain-related condition (OR = 2.43, p = .01), were associated with an increased risk of lifetime suicide attempts. CONCLUSIONS: Results demonstrate the high prevalence of suicidal thoughts and attempts among patients initiating buprenorphine. Findings may help to better identify at-risk patients and to inform screening, prevention, and mental health treatment efforts.
