Nna1 Mediates Purkinje Cell Dendritic Development via Lysyl Oxidase Propeptide and NF-ÎșB Signaling
SummaryThe molecular pathways controlling cerebellar Purkinje cell dendrite formation and maturation are poorly understood. The Purkinje cell degeneration (pcd) mutant mouse is characterized by mutations in Nna1, a gene discovered in an axonal regenerative context, but whose actual function in development and disease is unknown. We found abnormal development of Purkinje cell dendrites in postnatal pcdSid mice and linked this deficit to a deletion mutation in exon 7 of Nna1. With single cell gene profiling and virus-based gene transfer, we analyzed a molecular pathway downstream to Nna1 underlying abnormal Purkinje cell dendritogenesis in pcdSid mice. We discovered that mutant Nna1 dramatically increases intranuclear localization of lysyl oxidase propeptide, which interferes with NF-ÎșB RelA signaling and microtubule-associated protein regulation of microtubule stability, leading to underdevelopment of Purkinje cell dendrites. These findings provide insight into Nna1's role in neuronal development and why its absence renders Purkinje cells more vulnerable
Proton-proton elastic scattering at the LHC energy of {\surd} = 7 TeV
Proton-proton elastic scattering has been measured by the TOTEM experiment at
the CERN Large Hadron Collider at {\surd}s = 7 TeV in dedicated runs with the
Roman Pot detectors placed as close as seven times the transverse beam size
(sbeam) from the outgoing beams. After careful study of the accelerator optics
and the detector alignment, |t|, the square of four-momentum transferred in the
elastic scattering process, has been determined with an uncertainty of d t =
0.1GeV p|t|. In this letter, first results of the differential cross section
are presented covering a |t|-range from 0.36 to 2.5GeV2. The differential
cross-section in the range 0.36 < |t| < 0.47 GeV2 is described by an
exponential with a slope parameter B = (23.6{\pm}0.5stat {\pm}0.4syst)GeV-2,
followed by a significant diffractive minimum at |t| =
(0.53{\pm}0.01stat{\pm}0.01syst)GeV2. For |t|-values larger than ~ 1.5GeV2, the
cross-section exhibits a power law behaviour with an exponent of -7.8_\pm}
0.3stat{\pm}0.1syst. When compared to predictions based on the different
available models, the data show a strong discriminative power despite the small

Elastic Scattering and Total Cross-Section in p+p reactions measured by the LHC Experiment TOTEM at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
Proton-proton elastic scattering has been measured by the TOTEM experiment at
the CERN Large Hadron Collider at TeV in special runs with the
Roman Pot detectors placed as close to the outgoing beam as seven times the
transverse beam size. The differential cross-section measurements are reported
in the |t|-range of 0.36 to 2.5 GeV^2. Extending the range of data to low t
values from 0.02 to 0.33 GeV^2,and utilizing the luminosity measurements of
CMS, the total proton-proton cross section at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV is measured to be

First Results from the TOTEM Experiment
The first physics results from the TOTEM experiment are here reported,
concerning the measurements of the total, differential elastic, elastic and
inelastic pp cross-section at the LHC energy of = 7 TeV, obtained
using the luminosity measurement from CMS. A preliminary measurement of the

Observation of the Shadowing of Cosmic Rays by the Moon using a Deep Underground Detector
Using data collected by the MACRO experiment during the years 1989-1996, we
show evidence for the shadow of the moon in the underground cosmic ray flux
with a significance of 3.6 sigma. This detection of the shadowing effect is the
first by an underground detector. A maximum-likelihood analysis is used to
determine that the angular resolution of the apparatus is 0.9+/-0.3 degrees.
These results demonstrate MACRO's capabilities as a muon telescope by
confirming its absolute pointing ability and quantifying its angular

Search for massive rare particles with MACRO
Massive rare particles have been searched for in the penetrating cosmic
radiation using the MACRO apparatus at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories.
Liquid scintillators, streamer tubes and nuclear track detectors have been used
to search for magnetic monopoles (MMs).
Based on no observation of such signals, stringent flux limits are
established for MMs as slow as a few 10^(-5)c. The methods based on the
scintillator and on the nuclear track subdetectors were also applied to search
for nuclearites. Preliminary results of the searches for charged Q-balls are

Neutrino astronomy with the MACRO detector
High energy gamma ray astronomy is now a well established field and several
sources have been discovered in the region from a few GeV up to several TeV. If
sources involving hadronic processes exist, the production of photons would be
accompanied by neutrinos too. Other possible neutrino sources could be related
to the annihilation of WIMPs at the center of galaxies with black holes.
We present the results of a search for point-like sources using 1100
upward-going muons produced by neutrino interactions in the rock below and
inside the MACRO detector in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory. These data
show no evidence for a possible neutrino point-like source or for possible
correlations between gamma ray bursts and neutrinos. They have been used to set
flux upper limits for candidate point-like sources which are in the range

Nuclearite search with the MACRO detector at Gran Sasso
In this paper we present the results of a search for nuclearites in the
penetrating cosmic radiation using the scintillator and track-etch subdetectors
of the MACRO apparatus. The analyses cover the beta =v/c range at the detector
depth (3700 hg/cm^2) 10^-5 < beta < 1; for beta = 2 x 10^-3 the flux limit is
2.7 x 10^-16 cm^-2 s^-1 sr^-1 for an isotropic flux of nuclearites, and twice

Limits on dark matter WIMPs using upward-going muons in the MACRO detector
We perform an indirect search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles
(WIMPs) using the MACRO detector to look for neutrino-induced upward-going
muons resulting from the annihilation of WIMPs trapped in the Sun and Earth.
The search is conducted in various angular cones centered on the Sun and Earth
to accommodate a range of WIMP masses. No significant excess over the
background from atmospheric neutrinos is seen and limits are placed on the
upward-going muon fluxes from Sun and Earth. These limits are used to constrain
neutralino particle parameters from supersymmetric theory, including those
suggested by recent results from DAMA/NaI.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Atmospheric neutrino induced muons in the MACRO detector
A measurement of the flux of neutrino-induced muons using the MACRO detector
is presented. Different event topologies, corresponding to different neutrino
parent energies can be detected. The upward throughgoing muon sample is the
larger event sample. The observed upward-throughgoing muons are 26% fewer than
expected and the zenith angle distribution does not fit with the expected one.
Assuming neutrino oscillations, both measurements suggest maximum mixing and
Dm2 of a few times 10-3 eV2. The other samples are due to the internally
produced events and to upward-going stopping muons. These data show a regular
deficit of observed events in each angular bin, as expected assuming neutrino
oscillations with maximum mixing, in agreement with the analysis of the
