Probing hyperbolic polaritons using infrared attenuated total reflectance micro-spectroscopy
Hyperbolic polariton modes are highly appealing for a broad range of
applications in nanophotonics, including surfaced enhanced sensing,
sub-diffractional imaging and reconfigurable metasurfaces. Here we show that
attenuated total reflectance micro-spectroscopy (ATR) using standard
spectroscopic tools can launch hyperbolic polaritons in a Kretschmann-Raether
configuration. We measure multiple hyperbolic and dielectric modes within the
naturally hyperbolic material hexagonal boron nitride as a function of
different isotopic enrichments and flake thickness. This overcomes the
technical challenges of measurement approaches based on nanostructuring, or
scattering scanning nearfield optical microscopy. Ultimately, our ATR approach
allows us to compare the optical properties of small-scale materials prepared

Recovery using “float” from high intensity stress on growth hormone-like molecules in resistance trained men
Objective The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of a novel “floatation-restricted environmental stimulation therapy” (floatation-REST) on growth hormone responses to an intense resistance exercise stress. Design Nine resistance trained men (age: 23.4 ± 2.5 yrs.; height: 175.3 ± 5.4 cm; body mass: 85.3 ± 7.9 kg) completed a balanced, crossover-controlled study design with two identical exercise trials, differing only in post-exercise recovery intervention (i.e., control or floatation-REST). A two-week washout period was used between experimental conditions. Plasma lactate was measured pre-exercise, immediately post-exercise and after the 1 h. recovery interventions. Plasma iGH was measured pre-exercise, immediately-post exercise, and after the recovery intervention, as well as 24 h and 48 h after the exercise test. The bGH-L was measured only at pre-exercise and following each recovery intervention. Results For both experimental conditions, a significant (P ≤ 0.05) increase in lactate concentrations were observed immediately post-exercise (~14 mmol • L-1) and remained slightly elevated after the recovery condition. The same pattern of responses was observed for iGH with no differences from resting values at 24 and 48 h of recovery. The bGH-L showed no exercise-induced changes following recovery with either treatment condition, however concentration values were dramatically lower than ever reported. Conclusion The use of floatation-REST therapy immediately following intense resistance exercise does not appear to influence anterior pituitary function in highly resistance trained men. However, the lower values of bGH suggest dramatically different molecular processing mechanisms at work in this highly trained population
Active Galactic Nuclei and the Truncation of Star Formation in K+A Galaxies
We have searched for active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in K+A galaxies, using
multiwavelength imaging and spectroscopy in the Bootes field of the NOAO Deep
Wide-Field Survey. The K+A galaxies, which have had their star formation
rapidly truncated, are selected via their strong Balmer absorption lines and
weak H-alpha emission. Our sample consists of 24 K+A galaxies selected from
6594 0.10<z<0.35 galaxies brighter than I=20 with optical spectroscopy from the
AGN and Galaxy Evolution Survey. Two thirds of the K+A galaxies are likely
ongoing galaxy mergers, with nearby companion galaxies or tidal tails. Galaxy
mergers may be responsible for the truncation of star formation, or we are
observing the aftermath of merger triggered starbursts. As expected, the
optical colors of K+A galaxies largely fall between blue galaxies with ongoing
star formation and red passive galaxies. However, only 1% of the galaxies with
colors between the red and blue populations are K+A galaxies, and we conclude
that the truncation of star formation in K+A galaxies must have been unusually
abrupt (<100 Myr). We examined the AGN content of K+A galaxies with both
optical emission-line ratios (BPT diagrams) and Chandra X-ray imaging. At least
half of all K+A galaxies display the optical emission-line ratios of AGNs, and
a third of M_R<-22 K+A galaxies host AGNs with X-ray luminosities of 10^{42}
erg/s. The faintest K+A galaxies do not show clear evidence for hosting AGNs,
having emission-line ratios consistent with photoionization by massive stars
and few X-ray detections. We speculate that two mechanisms may be responsible
for the truncation of star formation in K+A galaxies, with AGN feedback only

Perceived parental control, restructuring ability, and leisure motivation: A cross-cultural comparison
Leisure is viewedworldwide as an important developmental context for adolescents. As leisure research and programs are shared across nations,
it is crucial to examine the cultural equivalence of leisure-related constructs
and how they are related. Grounded in self-determination theory,
this study explored the influence of perceived parental control
and leisure restructuring ability on leisure motivation (amotivation and
autonomous motivation) using samples of eighth grade adolescents in
the United States and South Africa. Results of multiple-group structural
equation modeling showed that the measurement model of the constructs
was equivalent across the two samples, but the determinants of
leisure motivation differed between the two samples. The findings provide
implications for future cross-cultural research in leisure and offer
insights on design and adaptation of leisure-based intervention and
education programs in different cultural contexts.IS
