Test facility for 6000 hour life test of 30 cm mercury ion thruster
The environmental and instrumentation requirements for long term testing of electrical propulsion thrusters which impose severe and unusual requirements upon the simulation facility were studied. High speed ions ejected from a mercury thruster erode material from collecting surfaces, which is then scattered and redeposited upon other surfaces, with resultant damage to the chamber and test article. By collecting the thruster plume on a frozen mercury surface damage to the thruster and chamber by back-scattered erosion products was minimized. Provisions for unattended operation, remote data acquisition, personnel safety, and instrumentation for assessing thruster performance are also discussed
Low surface pressure models for Titan's atmosphere
The inversion model for the atmosphere of Titan is reviewed. The basic features of the model are: a cold surface (80 K), a warm stratosphere (160 K) and a low surface pressure (20 mbar). The model is consistent with all existing thermal infrared spectrophotometry, but it cannot preclude the existence of an opaque, cloud, thick atmosphere. The model excludes other gases than methane as bulk constituents. Radio wavelengths observations, including recent data from the very large array, are discussed. These long wavelength observations may be the only direct means of sampling the surface environment before an entry probe or flyby
Ultraviolet observations of Titan from OAO-2
High altitude deposition of energy in Titan's atmosphere can have a significant effect on the spectral distribution of emitted thermal radiation from the satellite. This reasoning led to the prediction of emission peaks at wavelengths corresponding to allowed bands of CH4 and trace photolysis products such as C2H6. Intermediate resolution infrared spectrophotometry has encouraged this interpretation of the infrared properties of Titan, and provided the basis for initial, detailed model
America's Veterans: A Sound Investment
In this report, the authors argue that society should leverage the latest generation of men and women leaving the military, and the skills, expertise and experience they bring to the civilian workforce. The authors examine the employment challenges facing the nation's nearly 2.6 million post-9/11 combat veterans as they transition to civilian jobs. They note that recent veterans "have struggled with unemployment rates that exceed the national average" despite recent survey findings that showed "most managers felt that military veterans were "better" or "much better" than civilians in areas such as teamwork, reliability, openness to other cultures and races, and work ethic." General Caldwell and Major Burke knock down several stereotypes about recent veterans and offer recommendations that business and government can undertake to help veterans successfully navigate the civilian labor market
The Limits of Quintessence
We present evidence that the simplest particle-physics scalar-field models of
dynamical dark energy can be separated into distinct behaviors based on the
acceleration or deceleration of the field as it evolves down its potential
towards a zero minimum. We show that these models occupy narrow regions in the
phase-plane of w and w', the dark energy equation-of-state and its
time-derivative in units of the Hubble time. Restricting an energy scale of the
dark energy microphysics limits how closely a scalar field can resemble a
cosmological constant. These results, indicating a desired measurement
resolution of order \sigma(w')\approx (1+w), define firm targets for
observational tests of the physics of dark energy.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Spectral Variations in Early-Type Galaxies as a Function of Mass
We report on the strengths of three spectral indicators - Mg_2, Hbeta, and
Hn/Fe - in the integrated light of a sample of 100 field and cluster E/S0
galaxies. The measured indices are sensitive to age and/or and metallicity
variations within the galaxy sample. Using linear regression analysis for data
with non-uniform errors, we determine the intrinsic scatter present among the
spectral indices of our galaxy sample as a function of internal velocity
dispersion. Our analysis indicates that there is significantly more intrinsic
scatter in the two Balmer line indices than in the Mg_2 index, indicating that
the Balmer indices provide more dynamic range in determining the age of a
stellar population than does the Mg_2 index. Furthermore, the scatter is much
larger for the low velocity dispersion galaxies, indicating that star formation

The mirine plant bug Tropidosteptes forestierae, new species (Hemiptera: Miridae) is described from
Collier County, Florida, where it was found causing serious injury to an extensive ornamental hedge of Florida swampprivet, Forestiera segregata (Jacq.) Krug and Urb. (Oleaceae). Adult male and female, fifth instar, and egg are described. Color images of the adults, nymph, egg, and injury; scanning photomicrographs of selected adult structures; and illustrations of male genitalia are provided. A key to help distinguish the 16 species of Tropidosteptes known to occur in the southeastern United States is given
An inversion in the atmosphere of Titan
A very detailed greenhouse model derives a methane to hydrogen ratio of unity and a minimum surface pressure of 0.4 atm. Based on a surface gravity g = 140 cm sec/2, the minimum CH4 abundance is 30-40 km-A and the minimum H2 abundance varies from 15 to 85 km-A. A model of the atmosphere of Titan is proposed which seems to be consistent with observations and requires a much smaller CH4 abundance (of the order or 2 km-atm). Although no H2 is required, the presence of some H2 is readily accommodated. In this model, a temperature inversion exists in the atmosphere due to absorption of blue and ultraviolet solar radiation by small particles. The absorbed radiation is re-radiated by the dust and by molecules having long wavelength bands such as CH4 7.7 micrometer and ethane at 12.2 micrometer. The brightness temperature at 20 micrometer is primarily due to re-radiation by the dust
