    Robust Airport Gate Assignment Based on the Analysis of Flight Arrival Time

    At present, hub airport is facing a lot of emergency situations, e.g., the management of irregular flight, which affects the sustainable development of the airport. Most of the methods for evaluating the robustness of airport gate assignment have been proposed by giving an independent evaluation function based on their experience, and thus, subjective factors are involved in varying degrees. Therefore, this paper puts forward an objective evaluation method based on the analysis of airport flight arrival, which gives a digital transformation strategy for the airport resource scheduling. A novel evaluation method based on data analysis of flight arrival time, and a mathematical model are formulated accordingly. In order to solve the proposed NP-hard problem, a new hybrid genetic algorithm combined with a heuristic algorithm is designed. In numerical experiments, the actual flight data of an international hub airport are used to analyze and verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results showed the advantages in scheme stability, operating cost savings, and risk reduction of the proposed method

    Integrated Yard Space Allocation and Yard Crane Deployment Problem in Resource-Limited Container Terminals

    Yard storage space and yard crane equipment are the core resources in the container terminal yard area. This paper studies the integrated yard space allocation (outbound container space) and yard crane deployment problem in resource-limited container terminals where yard space and yard cranes are extremely scarce. Two corresponding counterstrategies are introduced, respectively, and the integrated problem is solved as mixed integer programming. The model this paper formulated considers the container volume fluctuation of the service line, and the objective is a trade-off between yard sharing space and terminal operation cost. In numerical experiments, this paper tries to reveal the management meaning in practical operation of container terminal and provides decision support for terminal managers; therefore a series of scenarios are presented to analyze the relations among the yard sharing space, the number of yard cranes, the size of yard subblock, and the cost of terminal operation

    A Two-Class Stochastic Network Equilibrium Model under Adverse Weather Conditions

    Adverse weather condition is one of the inducements that lead to supply uncertainty of an urban transportation system, while travelers’ multiple route choice criteria are the nonignorable reason resulting in demand uncertainty. This paper proposes a novel stochastic traffic network equilibrium model considering impacts of adverse weather conditions on roadway capacity and route choice criteria of two-class mixed roadway travellers on demand modes, in which the two-class route choice criteria root in travelers’ different network information levels (NILs). The actual route travel time (ARTT) and perceived route travel time (PRTT) are considered as the route choice criteria of travelers with perfect information (TPI) and travelers with bounded information (TBI) under adverse weather conditions, respectively. We then formulate the user equilibrium (UE) traffic assignment model in a variational inequality problem and propose a solution algorithm. Numerical examples including a small triangle network and the Sioux Falls network are presented to testify the validity of the model and to clarify the inner mechanism of the two-class UE model under adverse weather conditions. Managerial implications and applications are also proposed based on our findings to improve the operation efficiency of urban roadway network under adverse weather conditions

    With the increasing volume of global moving containers and the application of automation technologies, it is important for container terminals to improve handling efficiency. This paper provides a comprehensive literature review on yard management issues in automated container terminals, which is proven to be the key to improve container handling efficiency. This paper analyzes the hotspots in the current yard management research based on the VOSviewer for the last 20 years. More than 600 papers are recorded, and we further discuss 75 papers closely related to the research aiming to identify main features in current research. The research is divided into several clusters based on the 75 papers by VOSviewer. After reviewing and analyzing the literature on these clusters, this paper demonstrates the contribution and gap in the current research and puts forward emerging pressing research topics on yard management in automated container terminals for future research

    Capturing effects of container location dispersion on quay crane performance

    The relationship between container location dispersion for a single loading and the efficiency of quay cranes (QCs) was investigated. For this purpose, a discrete-event-based simulation model was developed to capture the container-handling process at a transshipment container terminal. A series of experiments were conducted to illustrate the effects of container location dispersion on the long-term performance of QCs and container allocation. These experiments showed that the container location dispersion has a significant effect on the distribution of loading containers. An optimal choice of container location dispersions can improve the efficiency of the QC and help to manage uncertainty at a lower cost. It is suggested that yard managers consider the workload of each berth when deciding on the location dispersion for a loading service. In addition, it was found that optimal container allocation dispersion reduces the congestion caused by time window conflicts and insufficient available equipment
