Black Holes in Gravity with Conformal Anomaly and Logarithmic Term in Black Hole Entropy
We present a class of exact analytic and static, spherically symmetric black
hole solutions in the semi-classical Einstein equations with Weyl anomaly. The
solutions have two branches, one is asymptotically flat and the other
asymptotically de Sitter. We study thermodynamic properties of the black hole
solutions and find that there exists a logarithmic correction to the well-known
Bekenstein-Hawking area entropy. The logarithmic term might come from non-local
terms in the effective action of gravity theories. The appearance of the
logarithmic term in the gravity side is quite important in the sense that with
this term one is able to compare black hole entropy up to the subleading order,
in the gravity side and in the microscopic statistical interpretation side.Comment: Revtex, 10 pages. v2: minor changes and to appear in JHE
Causality in AdS/CFT and Lovelock theory
We explore the constraints imposed on higher curvature corrections of the
Lovelock type due to causality restrictions in the boundary of asymptotically
AdS space-time. In the framework of AdS/CFT, this is related to positivity of
the energy constraints that arise in conformal collider physics. We present
explicit analytic results that fully address these issues for cubic Lovelock
gravity in arbitrary dimensions and give the formal analytic results that
comprehend general Lovelock theory. The computations can be performed in two
ways, both by considering a thermal setup in a black hole background and by
studying the scattering of gravitons with a shock wave in AdS. We show that
both computations coincide in Lovelock theory. The different helicities, as
expected, provide the boundaries defining the region of allowed couplings. We
generalize these results to arbitrary higher dimensions and discuss their
consequences on the shear viscosity to energy density ratio of CFT plasmas, the
possible existence of Boulware-Deser instabilities in Lovelock theory and the
extent to which the AdS/CFT correspondence might be valid for arbitrary
dimensions.Comment: 35 pages, 20 figures; v2: minor amendments and clarifications

AdS_7/CFT_6, Gauss-Bonnet Gravity, and Viscosity Bound
We study the relation between the causality and the positivity of energy
bounds in Gauss-Bonnet gravity in AdS_7 background and find a precise
agreement. Requiring the group velocity of metastable states to be bounded by
the speed of light places a bound on the value of Gauss-Bonnet coupling. To
find the positivity of energy constraints we compute the parameters which
determine the angular distribution of the energy flux in terms of three
independent coefficients specifying the three-point function of the
stress-energy tensor. We then relate the latter to the Weyl anomaly of the
six-dimensional CFT and compute the anomaly holographically. The resulting
upper bound on the Gauss-Bonnet coupling coincides with that from causality and
results in a new bound on viscosity/entropy ratio.Comment: 21 page, harvmac; v2: reference adde
Holographic Lovelock Gravities and Black Holes
We study holographic implications of Lovelock gravities in AdS spacetimes.
For a generic Lovelock gravity in arbitrary spacetime dimensions we formulate
the existence condition for asymptotically AdS black holes. We consider small
fluctuations around these black holes and determine the constraint on Lovelock
parameters by demanding causality of the boundary theory. For the case of cubic
Lovelock gravity in seven spacetime dimensions we compute the holographic Weyl
anomaly and determine the three point functions of the stress energy tensor in
the boundary CFT. Remarkably, these correlators happen to satisfy the same
relation as the one imposed by supersymmetry. We then compute the energy flux;
requiring it to be positive is shown to be completely equivalent to requiring
causality of the finite temperature CFT dual to the black hole. These
constraints are not stringent enough to place any positive lower bound on the
value of viscosity. Finally, we conjecture an expression for the energy flux
valid for any Lovelock theory in arbitrary dimensions.Comment: 31 pages, 1 figure, harvmac, references added, calculation of

Analytical study on holographic superconductors in external magnetic field
We investigate the holographic superconductors immersed in an external
magnetic field by using the analytical approach. We obtain the spatially
dependent condensate solutions in the presence of the magnetism and find
analytically that the upper critical magnetic field satisfies the relation
given in the Ginzburg-Landau theory. We observe analytically the reminiscent of
the Meissner effect where the magnetic field expels the condensate. Extending
to the D-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet AdS black holes, we examine the influence
given by the Gauss-Bonnet coupling on the condensation. Different from the
positive coupling, we find that the negative Gauss-Bonnet coupling enhances the
condensation when the external magnetism is not strong enough.Comment: revised version, to appear in JHE
The Weak Gravity Conjecture and the Viscosity Bound with Six-Derivative Corrections
The weak gravity conjecture and the shear viscosity to entropy density bound
place constraints on low energy effective field theories that may help to
distinguish which theories can be UV completed. Recently, there have been
suggestions of a possible correlation between the two constraints. In some
interesting cases, the behavior was precisely such that the conjectures were
mutually exclusive. Motivated by these works, we study the mass to charge and
shear viscosity to entropy density ratios for charged AdS5 black branes, which
are holographically dual to four-dimensional CFTs at finite temperature. We
study a family of four-derivative and six-derivative perturbative corrections
to these backgrounds. We identify the region in parameter space where the two
constraints are satisfied and in particular find that the inclusion of the
next-to-leading perturbative correction introduces wider possibilities for the
satisfaction of both constraints.Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures, v2: published version, refs added, minor

Dramatic escalation in metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular risk in a Chinese population experiencing rapid economic development
Background
Metabolic syndrome (MetSyn) increases the incidence of cardiovascular disease. Information on changes in prevalence of MetSyn in developing countries is limited. This study aims to compare MetSyn prevalence and its associated vascular risk over the period between 2002 and 2010 in a population which has had the world’s fastest economic development over the past three decades.
Methods
Two health surveys were conducted by using the multistage cluster random sampling method in a Chinese population of 85 million in southern China. The participants received a full medical check-up, including measurement of blood pressure (BP), obesity indices, fasting lipids and glucose levels. Data describing socio-economic status and lifestyle factors were also collected through interview. Metabolic syndrome was defined in accordance with the International Diabetes Federation criteria.
Results
A total of 3,561 participants from Survey 2010 were included in the data analysis. Women had a significantly higher prevalence of MetSyn than men. Comparison between the two surveys shows that age-standardized prevalence of MetSyn increased fourfold (from 5.4% in 2002 to 21.3% in 2010) in those ≧ 20 years. Among the MetSyn components, prevalence of hyperglycaemia has increased most (from 9.1% to 53.1%). The age-standardized prevalence of central obesity, hypertension, hypertriglyceridaemia and low HDL-cholesterol increased from 13.5% to 25.4%, from 23.6% to 40.8%, from 12.1% to 17.4% and from 32.1% to 71.1%, respectively. Differences between rural and urban residents in the prevalence in MetSyn and its components narrowed in 2010.
Conclusions
Cardiovascular risk escalated dramatically in this population between 2002 and 2010. The escalation may relate to the rapid economic development, which led to accelerating changes in nutrition, lifestyle, and socio-economic status. Our findings suggest that health transition in rapidly developing second- and third-world countries may be much faster than what has been observed in Western countries.published_or_final_versio
Analysis of radiation-induced cell death in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma and rat liver maintained in microfluidic devices
Objective The aim of this study was to investigate how head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) tissue biopsies maintained in a pseudo in vivo environment within a bespoke microfluidic device respond to radiation treatment. Study Design Feasibility study. Setting Tertiary referral center. Subjects and Methods Thirty-five patients with HNSCC were recruited, and liver tissue from 5 Wistar rats was obtained. A microfluidic device was used to maintain the tissue biopsy samples in a viable state. Rat liver was used to optimize the methodology. HNSCC was obtained from patients with T1-T3 laryngeal or oropharyngeal SCC; N1-N2 metastatic cervical lymph nodes were also obtained. Irradiation consisted of single doses of between 2 Gy and 40 Gy and a fractionated course of 5×2 Gy. Cell death was assessed in the tissue effluent using the soluble markers lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and cytochrome c and in the tissue by immunohistochemical detection of cleaved cytokeratin18 (M30 antibody). Results A significant surge in LDH release was demonstrated in the rat liver after a single dose of 20 Gy; in HNSCC, it was seen after 40 Gy compared with the control. There was no significant difference in cytochrome c release after 5 Gy or 10 Gy. M30 demonstrated a dose-dependent increase in apoptotic index for a given increase in single-dose radiotherapy. There was a significant increase in apoptotic index between 1×2 Gy and 5×2 Gy. Conclusion M30 is a superior method compared with soluble markers in detecting low-dose radiation-induced cell death. This microfluidic technique can be used to assess radiation-induced cell death in HNSCC and therefore has the potential to be used to predict radiation response
Holographic GB gravity in arbitrary dimensions
We study the properties of the holographic CFT dual to Gauss-Bonnet gravity
in general dimensions. We establish the AdS/CFT dictionary and in
particular relate the couplings of the gravitational theory to the universal
couplings arising in correlators of the stress tensor of the dual CFT. This
allows us to examine constraints on the gravitational couplings by demanding
consistency of the CFT. In particular, one can demand positive energy fluxes in
scattering processes or the causal propagation of fluctuations. We also examine
the holographic hydrodynamics, commenting on the shear viscosity as well as the
relaxation time. The latter allows us to consider causality constraints arising
from the second-order truncated theory of hydrodynamics.Comment: 48 pages, 9 figures. v2: New discussion on free fields in subsection
3.3 and new appendix B on conformal tensor fields. Added comments on the
relation between the central charge appearing in the two-point function and
the "central charge" characterizing the entropy density in the discussion.
