    The Population Affected by the Syndemic of COVID-19 and Poverty is More Likely to be Hospitalized with SARS-CoV-2 Pneumonia

    Background Lockdown measures to control COVID-19 have exacerbated the poverty epidemic. We hypothesized that the synergistic interaction of COVID-19 and poverty epidemics favors the development of more severe forms of COVID-19 in the population living in poverty. To test this hypothesis, we assessed whether an ecological association exists between the geographic distribution of hospitalized patients with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia and markers of poverty in the city of Louisville, KY. Methods Using the geomasked home addresses of hospitalized patients with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia in the city of Louisville, a kernel density heatmap was created. Kuldorff’s spatial scan statistic was used to calculate areas of increased risk for SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia hospitalization. Heat maps were created for census tract–level demographics according to income, age, race, and ethnicity to assess whether an ecological association exists with the spatial distribution of SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia hospitalization. Results Four areas of increased risk of hospitalization due to SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia were identified in the western and central sections of the city, with relative risks (RRs) ranging from 2.3 to 3.2 (p Conclusions Residents from low-income areas are almost three times more likely to develop SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia requiring hospitalization. Current efforts to decrease the number of COVID-19 hospitalizations through vaccination of populations at risk should be concentrated in city areas with a low-income level population

    Lack of Association of the ABO Blood Group with COVID-19 risk and Severity in Hospitalized Patients in Louisville, KY

    Background: The potential association of the ABO blood group with the risk of COVID-19 and its severity has attracted a lot of interest since the start of the pandemic. While a number of studies have reported an increased risk associated with blood type A and a reduced risk with type O, other studies have did not found a significant effect. This study aimed to define the prevalence of different ABO blood groups in hospitalized COVID-19 patients in the Louisville, KY area and to investigate whether an association exists between the blood group and disease severity. Methods: This was a retrospective observational study of 380 patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection hospitalized to eight of the adult hospitals in the city of Louisville. Patients were divided into four different groups according to their ABO blood type. Demographic characteristics and clinical variables, including laboratory data as well as clinical outcomes were compared. Results: Type O was the most common blood group among the hospitalized patients (51%) followed by type A (31%), B (14%) and AB (4%). The observed blood group distribution among the patients was not significantly different from the distribution expected when compared to a population of similar racial/ethnic composition. No significant associations were found between the blood group and comorbidities, inflammatory biomarkers as well as with recorded outcomes, including the mortality rate and the length of the hospital stay. Conclusions: The data from hospitalized patients in Louisville is is not consistent with the ABO blood group having a significant effect as a risk or severity factor for COVID-19, but it is representative in COVID-19 or its severityof its prevalence among different racial/ethnic populations

    A Comparison Efficacy Study of Commercial Nasopharyngeal Swabs versus a Novel 3D Printed Swab for the Detection of SARS-CoV-2

    The large volume of diagnostic tests required by the response to the pandemic of COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a shortage of commercial nasopharyngeal swabs. In an effort to alleviate the shortage, swabs created by 3D printing may be a solution. We designed and produced 3D printed swabs and sought to compare their ability to detect SARS-CoV-2 in patients admitted for COVID-19 or who were suspected of having COVID-19. A total of 30 patients were swabbed with a commercial and printed 3D swab. Results matched in 28 of 31 patients (90%). Two patients were discordant with a positive commercial swab and a negative 3D printed swab and another was discordant because the 3D printed swab was positive and the commercial swab was negative. The sensitivity was 89%, specificity was 92% and Cohen’s kappa coefficient was 0.80. The 3D printed swabs performed acceptably compared to the commercial swab and may be considered for use in lieu of a commercial swab

    Lymph node homing cells biologically enriched for γΎ T cells express multiple genes from the T19 repertoire

    Sheep γΎ T cells have been shown serologically to express T19, a membrane protein of 180-200 kDa which is a member of the scavenger receptor superfamily. Previous work from this laboratory resulted in the detection of a multigene family of T19-like genes in the sheep genome. In this study nucleotide sequences from several T19 genes were determined and are reported along with the corresponding segments of a number of expressed mRNA molecules. A segment of a single sheep T19-like gene was sequenced and these data, along with the corresponding sequences from cloned T19-like cDNA molecules from sheep and cow, were used to design an ollgonucleotide primer system suitable for amplification of corresponding segments of many T19 genes and their cDNAs. Between 30 and 40% of cloned T19 genes were amenable to amplification using the selected primers, and sequence analysis of cloned PCR products confirmed that different T19 genes encode unique amino acid sequences.     Igbo-English intrasentential codeswitching and the Matrix Language Frame model

    This paper uses data from Igbo-English intrasentential codeswitching involving mixed nominal expressions to test the Matrix Language Frame (MLF) model. The MLF model is one of the most highly influential frameworks used in the study of grammatical aspects of codeswitching. Three principles associated with it, the Matrix Language Principle, the Asymmetry Principle and the Uniform Structure Principle, were tested on data collected from informal conversations by educated adult Igbo-English bilinguals resident in Port Harcourt. The results of the analyses suggest general support for the three principles and for identifying Igbo-English as a “classic” case of codeswitching

    Physico-Chemical Evaluation of Rationally Designed Melanins as Novel Nature-Inspired Radioprotectors

    Melanin, a high-molecular weight pigment that is ubiquitous in nature, protects melanized microorganisms against high doses of ionizing radiation. However, the physics of melanin interaction with ionizing radiation is unknown.We rationally designed melanins from either 5-S-cysteinyl-DOPA, L-cysteine/L-DOPA, or L-DOPA with diverse structures as shown by elemental analysis and HPLC. Sulfur-containing melanins had higher predicted attenuation coefficients than non-sulfur-containing melanins. All synthetic melanins displayed strong electron paramagnetic resonance (2.14.10(18), 7.09.10(18), and 9.05.10(17) spins/g, respectively), with sulfur-containing melanins demonstrating more complex spectra and higher numbers of stable free radicals. There was no change in the quality or quantity of the stable free radicals after high-dose (30,000 cGy), high-energy ((137)Cs, 661.6 keV) irradiation, indicating a high degree of radical stability as well as a robust resistance to the ionizing effects of gamma irradiation. The rationally designed melanins protected mammalian cells against ionizing radiation of different energies.We propose that due to melanin's numerous aromatic oligomers containing multiple pi-electron system, a generated Compton recoil electron gradually loses energy while passing through the pigment, until its energy is sufficiently low that it can be trapped by stable free radicals present in the pigment. Controlled dissipation of high-energy recoil electrons by melanin prevents secondary ionizations and the generation of damaging free radical species

The distribution of other papers highlights the need for intensified research into all the language families of Africa, including basic documentation, in order to comprehend linguistic diversities and convergences across the continent. In this regard, the chapter on Daats’íin (Gumuzic) stands out as the first-ever published article on this hitherto unknown and endangered language found in the Ethiopian-Sudanese border lands
