Mother Mary in the Hindu pantheon among Portuguese Gujarati families

The South Asian diaspora in Portugal is diverse in nationalities and religious practices. The most prominent population is the Hindu-Gujarati, living in Portugal since the late 1970s. This migration was boosted by the decolonization of a former Portuguese colony, Mozambique, to where Indians had migrated from India. Anchored in long-term fieldwork, this chapter concentrates on Hindu practices that incorporate elements of Portuguese Catholicism, specifically a representation of Mother Mary, Our Lady of Fatima. These practices point to hybridization processes among transnational communities and, in that sense, to challenge dominant visions about Hindu diaspora. To illustrate our argument, we will present this population and its cultural practices, to better understand this interest on Our Lady of Fatima, a Portuguese title for the Virgin Mary. The role of Diu in the Hindu-Gujarati diaspora in Portugal

This article introduces the Diu transnational population with ties to Mozambique, Portugal, and the United Kingdom, with the aim of portraying these ties historically, socially, and culturally. Both authors have engaged in long-term ethnographic fieldwork, mostly working together to generate advantages for the study of transnationality and diaspora. Therefore, this article details our view after more than a decade of fieldwork while also conveying the voices of our interlocutors, who better illustrate Diu and its plural dimensions. The article describes the Diu Hindu representations of late Portuguese colonialism in India (until 1961) and explains the plural dimensions of transnationality. On the one hand, we focus on the cultural practices associated with transnationality, paying special attention both to the return to India and to marriages. Introduction: representations of India at home and abroad

This dossier makes an original contribution to the semantic analysis of the representations on India. It aims to broaden the academic debate on South Asian studies by focusing on the cultural practices of both Indians and migrants and on their representations of India, a much neglected subject in the literature. The five articles it comprises examine three dimensions of representations about India. One concerns the connection between tourism and religion, and the transformation of representations of Portuguese presence in Goa. Another dimension addresses the representations of the lifestyle migrants in India and the population in Portugal, notably regarding the consumption of an Indian and Bollywood lifestyle. A third dimension focuses on South Asian migrants in Portugal embeddedness, through economic processes. The main finding that brings these papers together is that the importance given by the different actors to the cultural representations about India is so strong that it defines decisions for their life experiences. These cultural representations are heterogeneous, circulating with divergent meanings in India and abroad, grounded on different images of past and present. O papel de mediação do/a antropólog/a (entre informantes e serviços públicos): um estudo de caso na Quinta da Vitória, Loures

Este artigo parte de uma reflexão metodológica sobre os efeitos das interacções no terreno entre o antropólogo e os seus informantes. A Quinta da Vitória é um bairro de habitação precária onde tenho desenvolvido trabalho de campo com observação participante desde o ano 2000. Este bairro atravessa um processo de realojamento prolongado, e é por isso um contexto particularmente fértil em situações que me colocaram numa situação de mediadora cultural informal. Estas situações são particularmente frequentes entre os que desenvolvem trabalho de campo onde ocorrem processos de construção identitária face ao exterior das comunidades em causa. Apesar de comum, a reflexão sobre estas situações é escassa. Este artigo procura explorar o papel de mediação que ocorreu por diversas ocasiões na relação antropólogo-informantes no terreno em causa. O artigo começa com uma questão de carácter teórico-metodológico para depois se debruçar sobre o terreno, onde se verificaram inúmeras situações que evidenciam a tensão entre pesquisa etnográfica e mediação cultural

Políticas sociais lentas, resistências lentas: caso dos hindus da Quinta da Vitória

O programa especial de realojamento (PER) realojou milhares de famílias de bairros em habitação social especialmente construída para substituir os então chamados “bairros de barracas”. As histórias que este programa encerra são muitas e estão retratadas na literatura sobre habitação social, mas o acompanhamento destes processos num tempo longo encerra por sua vez histórias particulares de moradores que esperaram, em determinadas situações, décadas pelo realojamento. Neste capítulo retomo um trabalho de campo etnográfico que seguiu de perto um conjunto de famílias que habitavam o bairro Quinta da Vitória, cujo processo de realojamento foi moroso e sem solução habitacional para uma parte importante dos seus moradores. O enfoque será feito relativamente ao momento em que os moradores do bairro participaram ativamente num movimento pela defesa do direito à habitação, em 2006. Se passados mais de dez anos, a literatura sobre habitação cresceu exponencialmente, a proposta é voltar atrás para procurar compreender melhor como se opera um caso de participação de moradores de um bairro onde há anos não existia movimento associativo.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

O Programa Especial de Realojamento. Ambiente histórico, político e social

Neste artigo propõe-se uma revisão dos discursos sobre o PER enquanto este programa de habitação social de grande envergadura era ainda uma ideia, e também dos seus primeiros passos. Analisa-se a forma pela qual técnicos e cientistas interessados e envolvidos na problemática da habitação mantiveram uma postura crítica relativamente a este Programa, ao mesmo tempo que este vinha sendo implementado. Olha-se criticamente para o PER e para os seus múltiplos discursos (legislativo, técnicos, políticos, sociais, e ainda para os discursos das populações-alvo), procurando dar conta do ambiente vivido no PER

Coentros e garam masala. Passar fronteiras académicas através da cozinha

O livro Coentros e Garam Masala é um livro de receitas. Publicado no final de 2016, resulta de um projeto que foi ganhando corpo, entre uma antropóloga e a sua interlocutora privilegiada. O processo de recolha das receitas não correspondeu a um trabalho aprofundado de cultura material ou de antropologia da alimentação. Não é um trabalho antropológico, mas decorre de uma relação sedimentada em contexto etnográfico. Neste capítulo conta-se o processo que deu origem ao livro e os seus resultados desde a publicação, com os seguintes enfoques: a realização pessoal de duas pessoas; o carácter de retribuição, de retorno etnográfico, da recolha das receitas e sua transformação em livro; a reflexão metodológica que este livro, para lá da fronteira académica, gera.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The hidden transcript in a neighborhood’s re-housing process: the case of Hindus in Quinta da Vitória

As dozens of other informal settlements, Quinta da Vitória was one of the neighborhoods included in the Special Re-housing Program (PER), and its inhabitants would be resettled in social housing. Comparing with other similar settlements, the PER process at Quinta da Vitória was too long. In this paper I will describe and analyze the ways by which the Hindu residents responded to this huge social housing policy in Portugal, which was meant to end up with all “shanty towns”. The main purpose of this paper is yet to explore James Scott’s (1990) conceptualization on subtle resistance and about the hidden transcript, its forms, and development into public forms of resistance. The article is also expected to contribute to the larger debate about social policies in Portugal

Vulnerability and housing policies through the lens of Anthropology. An introduction

The Dossier «Vulnerability and Housing Policies. Anthropological insights across Europe» is the result of a panel organized by the editors at the 15th EASA Biennial Conference hosted by Stockholm University in August 2018. In this context, we proposed to explore ethnographically housing policies as peculiar and paradigmatic forms of contemporary «regimes of mobility». Coherently to the panel target, the main theme of this Dossier is the anthropological analysis of the production of social and political vulnerability in Europe through housing policies. In particular, the ethnographies hosted in this Dossier explore the dense intersection between different configurations of social and political action, such as housing rights, residents’ responses to public policies, vulnerability, real estate politics, migration, forced evictions, infrastructures. It is impossible to understand contemporary Europe, we argue, without understanding what is going on with housing policies. Habitação e sociedade: entrevista a Raul da Silva Pereira por Rita Ávila Cachado e João Pedro Silva Nunes

Ao propor o dossiê “Políticas de Habitação em Portugal” a esta revista, a comissão editorial sugeriu-nos que entrevistássemos Raul da Silva Pereira. Personalidade rara em entusiasmo, dedicação e antiguidade na Análise Social, ocupou-se, em tempos, da investigação e dos debates sobre a habitação em Portugal. Escreveu para os dois primeiros números da Análise Social; publicou outros artigos mais tarde. Fez parte da equipa que no Gabinete de Investigações Sociais (GIS) deu origem a esta revista, que agora completa 50 anos. Além da sua colaboração como investigador, trabalhava mais na retaguarda, a procurar colaborações, organizar a revista e ver as gralhas , num trabalho escassamente remunerado
