An experimental investigation on friction characteristics of air flow in microtube with structured surface roughness
This paper was presented at the 3rd Micro and Nano Flows Conference (MNF2011), which was held at the Makedonia Palace Hotel, Thessaloniki in Greece. The conference was organised by Brunel University and supported by the Italian Union of Thermofluiddynamics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, University of Thessaly, IPEM, the Process Intensification Network, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Heat Transfer Society, HEXAG - the Heat Exchange Action Group, and the Energy Institute.Experiments were conducted in this research to investigate roughness effect to flow characteristics and heat transfer coefficient of air and CO2 flow in circular micro-tubes. The internal surface of tested tube included smooth, structure helical fin surfaces and random roughness surfaces. Smooth tube is a commercial S. S. 304 tube with internal diameter of 962 μm and average roughness Ra=0.8 μm, while rough circular tubes were lab made Nickel tube with diameters ranging from 926 μm to 977 μm and roughness elements from 5.3 μm to 44.6 μm in height. The experimental results indicated that f and Nu in smooth tube was predicted very well by conventional correlations both for air and CO2. In rough tubes the friction factor was significant higher than the prediction of conventional correlations both in laminar and turbulent flow. Heat transfer enhancement in laminar flow is slightly, nevertheless, in turbulent flow the heat transfer enhancement was significant and the enhancement increases with the increasing of Re. The random rough tubes revealed a higher heat transfer enhancement than the structured helical fin tubes
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Patients Exhibit Reduced Expression of CLEC16A Isoforms in Peripheral Leukocytes
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a prototypic autoimmune disease with multiple etiological factors. The SLE susceptibility locus on chromosome 16p13 encodes a novel gene CLEC16A and its functional relationship with SLE is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the expression correlation of the two major CLEC16A spliced transcripts with SLE development. Expressions of the long (V1) and short (V2) CLEC16A isoforms in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were assayed by quantitative real time PCR and compared between healthy individuals and SLE patients. Correlation of CLEC16A isoform expression levels with SLE susceptibility, disease severity and twelve clinical parameters were also evaluated. Full length transcripts of CLEC16A V1 and V2 isoforms were readily amplified from PBMCs of healthy controls and patients at varying abundance. Compared with healthy controls (n = 86), expression levels of V1 and V2 were significantly reduced by ~two- and four-fold respectively in SLE patients (n = 181). The relative V2/V1 ratio was also significantly reduced by approximately two-fold. With regard to SLE disease parameters, only a weak positive correlation was found between CLEC16A V1 expression levels and SLE disease activity index (SLEDAI) score. Decision support for personalized cloud service selection through multi-attribute trustworthiness evaluation
Facing a customer market with rising demands for cloud service dependability and security, trustworthiness evaluation techniques are becoming essential to cloud service selection. But these methods are out of the reach to most customers as they require considerable expertise. Additionally, since the cloud service evaluation is often a costly and time-consuming process, it is not practical to measure trustworthy attributes of all candidates for each customer. Many existing models cannot easily deal with cloud services which have very few historical records. In this paper, we propose a novel service selection approach in which the missing value prediction and the multi-attribute trustworthiness evaluation are commonly taken into account. By simply collecting limited historical records, the current approach is able to support the personalized trustworthy service selection. The experimental results also show that our approach performs much better than other competing ones with respect to the customer preference and expectation in trustworthiness assessment. © 2014 Ding et al
Water compatible resin for separation and recovery of dissolved precious metals

Traditionally, ion-exchange resin, polymer ultra-filtration and micro-emulsion are applied in the treatment of plating effluents. However, they all have different weaknesses. Many reports have been published for the separation using aqueous biphasic system. Based on this methodology, polystyrene-grafted-polyglycidol (PS-PG), a water-compatible polymer was synthesized. This type of polymer can be used for gold or silver extraction. An innovation approach on the separation of metal
There has been increasing environmental concerns on the metallic pollution in recent decades. The conventional technologies used for metal extraction are ion-exchange resins, polymer ultrafiltration and microemulsion. The whole extraction mechanism can be divided into 4 steps: 1) The binding of dissolved metal to active sites, 2) Separation of the metal load extractant from the lean phase, 3) Reverse extraction of loaded metal for recovery 4) Recycling of extractant for repeated extraction. Antioxidant, antibacterial and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities of different extracts of Cortex Moutan
Different extracts of Cortex Moutan (CM) were investigated for their antioxidant, antibacterial and α- glucosidase inhibitory activities. The content of paeonol was quantified by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The results show that the yield of acetone extract (57.14%) was significantly higher than those of other solvents. The ethyl-acetate extract exhibited maximum paeonol concentration (60.69 μg/ml), good antibacterial activities (MIC = 100 μg/ml) against Escherichia coli and possessed significant α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. In addition, among all of the extracts, ethylacetate extract demonstrated a high total phenolic value of 127.12 ± 1.42 mg GAE/g, high DPPH radical scavenging activity with an IC50 of 19.88 ± 0.26 μg/ml, and significant reducing power, suggesting that CM is a potential source of natural antioxidants.Key words: Cortex Moutan, antioxidant, 11-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl hydrate (DPPH), reducing power, antibacterial, α-glucosidas
