Topological Interactions in Warped Extra Dimensions
Topological interactions will be generated in theories with compact extra
dimensions where fermionic chiral zero modes have different localizations. This
is the case in many warped extra dimension models where the right-handed top
quark is typically localized away from the left-handed one. Using
deconstruction techniques, we study the topological interactions in these
models. These interactions appear as trilinear and quadrilinear gauge boson
couplings in low energy effective theories with three or more sites, as well as
in the continuum limit. We derive the form of these interactions for various
cases, including examples of Abelian, non-Abelian and product gauge groups of
phenomenological interest. The topological interactions provide a window into
the more fundamental aspects of these theories and could result in unique
signatures at the Large Hadron Collider, some of which we explore.Comment: 40 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables; modifications in the KK parity

Shoreline and Bathymetry Approximation in Mesh Generation for Tidal Renewable Simulations
Due to the fractal nature of the domain geometry in geophysical flow simulations, a completely accurate description of the domain in terms of a computational mesh is frequently deemed infeasible. Shoreline and bathymetry simplification methods are used to remove small scale details in the geometry, particularly in areas away from the region of interest. To that end, a novel method for shoreline and bathymetry simplification is presented. Existing shoreline simplification methods typically remove points if the resultant geometry satisfies particular geometric criteria. Bathymetry is usually simplified using traditional filtering techniques, that remove unwanted Fourier modes. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) has been used in other fields to isolate small-scale structures from larger scale coherent features in a robust way, underpinned by a rigorous but simple mathematical framework. Here we present a method based on principal component analysis aimed towards simplification of shorelines and bathymetry. We present the algorithm in detail and show simplified shorelines and bathymetry in the wider region around the North Sea. Finally, the methods are used in the context of unstructured mesh generation aimed at tidal resource assessment simulations in the coastal regions around the UK
PGB pair production at LHC and ILC as a probe of the topcolor-assisted technicolor models
The topcolor-assisted technicolor (TC2) model predicts some light pseudo
goldstone bosons (PGBs), which may be accessible at the LHC or ILC. In this
work we study the pair productions of the charged or neutral PGBs at the LHC
and ILC. For the productions at the LHC we consider the processes proceeding
through gluon-gluon fusion and quark-antiquark annihilation, while for the
productions at the ILC we consider both the electron-positron collision and the
photon-photon collision. We find that in a large part of parameter space the
production cross sections at both colliders can be quite large compared with
the low standard model backgrounds. Therefore, in future experiments these
productions may be detectable and allow for probing TC2 model.Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures. slight changes in the text; notations for

Multi-Photon Signals from Composite Models at LHC
We analyze the collider signals of composite scalars that emerge in certain
little Higgs models and models of vectorlike confinement. Similar to the decay
of the pion into photon pairs, these scalars mainly decay through
anomaly-induced interactions into electroweak gauge bosons, leading to a
distinct signal with three or more photons in the final state. We study the
standard model backgrounds for these signals, and find that the LHC can
discover these models over a large range of parameter space with 30 fb
at 14 TeV. An early discovery at the current 7 TeV run is possible in some
regions of parameter space. We also discuss possibilities to measure the spin
of the particles in the and decay channels.Comment: 18 pages, LaTe
Colored Resonant Signals at the LHC: Largest Rate and Simplest Topology
We study the colored resonance production at the LHC in a most general
approach. We classify the possible colored resonances based on group theory
decomposition, and construct their effective interactions with light partons.
The production cross section from annihilation of valence quarks or gluons may
be on the order of 400 - 1000 pb at LHC energies for a mass of 1 TeV with
nominal couplings, leading to the largest production rates for new physics at
the TeV scale, and simplest event topology with dijet final states. We apply
the new dijet data from the LHC experiments to put bounds on various possible
colored resonant states. The current bounds range from 0.9 to 2.7 TeV. The
formulation is readily applicable for future searches including other decay
modes.Comment: 29 pages, 9 figures. References updated and additional K-factors

Dijet resonances, widths and all that
The search for heavy resonances in the dijet channel is part of the on-going
physics programme, both at the Tevatron and at the LHC. Lower limits have been
placed on the masses of dijet resonances predicted in a wide variety of models.
However, across experiments, the search strategy assumes that the effect of the
new particles is well-approximated by on-shell production and subsequent decay
into a pair of jets. We examine the impact of off-shell effects on such
searches, particularly for strongly interacting resonances.Comment: Version published in JHE
LHC Predictions from a Tevatron Anomaly in the Top Quark Forward-Backward Asymmetry
We examine the implications of the recent CDF measurement of the top-quark
forward-backward asymmetry, focusing on a scenario with a new color octet
vector boson at 1-3 TeV. We study several models, as well as a general
effective field theory, and determine the parameter space which provides the
best simultaneous fit to the CDF asymmetry, the Tevatron top pair production
cross section, and the exclusion regions from LHC dijet resonance and contact
interaction searches. Flavor constraints on these models are more subtle and
less severe than the literature indicates. We find a large region of allowed
parameter space at high axigluon mass and a smaller region at low mass; we
match the latter to an SU(3)xSU(3)/SU(3) coset model with a heavy vector-like
fermion. Our scenario produces discoverable effects at the LHC with only 1-2
inverse femtobarns of luminosity at 7-8 TeV. Lastly, we point out that a
Tevatron measurement of the b-quark forward-backward asymmetry would be very
helpful in characterizing the physics underlying the top-quark asymmetry.Comment: 35 pages, 10 figures, 4 table
Quark masses and mixings in the RS1 model with a condensing 4th generation
We study the hierarchy of quark masses and mixings in a model based on a
5-dimensional spacetime with constant curvature of Randall-Sundrum type with
two branes, where the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking is caused dynamically by
the condensation of a 4th generation of quarks, due to underlying physics from
the 5D bulk and the first KK gluons. We first study the hierarchy of quark
masses and mixings that can be obtained from purely adjusting the profile
localizations, finding that realistic masses are not reproduced unless non
trivial hierarchies of underlying 4-fermion interactions from the bulk are
included. Then we study global U(1) symmetries that can be imposed in order to
obtain non-symmetric modified Fritzsch-like textures in the mass matrices that
reproduce reasonably well quark masses and CKM mixings.Comment: Minor changes. Version accepted for publication in JHE
Truncated Schwinger-Dyson Equations and Gauge Covariance in QED3
We study the Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformations (LKFT) in momentum
space for the dynamically generated mass function in QED3. Starting from the
Landau gauge results in the rainbow approximation, we construct solutions in
other covariant gauges. We confirm that the chiral condensate is gauge
invariant as the structure of the LKFT predicts. We also check that the gauge
dependence of the constituent fermion mass is considerably reduced as compared
to the one obtained directly by solving SDE.Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures. v3. Improved and Expanded. To appear in Few

The UK needs an open data portal dedicated to coastal flood and erosion hazard risk and resilience
In the UK, coastal flooding and erosion are two of the primary climate-related hazards to communities, businesses, and infrastructure. To better address the ramifications of those hazards, now and into the future, the UK needs to transform its scattered, fragmented coastal data resources into a systematic, integrated portal for quality-assured, publicly accessible open data. Such a portal would support analyses of coastal risk and resilience by hosting, in addition to data layers for coastal flooding and erosion, a diverse array of spatial datasets for building footprints, infrastructure networks, land use, population, and various socio-economic measures and indicators derived from survey and census data. The portal would facilitate novel combinations of spatial data layers to yield scientifically, societally, and economically beneficial insights into UK coastal systems
