A Second Shell in the Fornax dSph Galaxy
In the search for tidal structure in Galactic satellite systems, we have
conducted a photometric survey over a 10 square degree area centred on the
Fornax dSph galaxy. The survey was made in two colours, and the resulting
colour-magnitude data were used as a mask to select candidate Fornax RGB stars,
thereby increasing the contrast of Fornax stars to background sources in the
outer regions. Previously, we reported the presence of a shell (age 2 Gyr)
located towards the centre of Fornax. In this contribution we reveal a second
shell, significantly larger than the first, located 1.3 degrees NW from the
centre of Fornax, outside the nominal tidal radius. Moreover, the distribution
of Fornax RGB stars reveals two lobes extending to the spatial limit of our
survey, and aligned with the minor axis and with the two shells. These results
support the hypothesis of a merger between Fornax and a gas-rich companion

Superstring dualities and p-brane bound states
We show that the M-theory/IIA and IIA/IIB superstring dualities together with
the diffeomorphism invariance of the underlying theories require the presence
of certain p-brane bound states in IIA and IIB superstring theories preserving
1/2 of the spacetime supersymmetry. We then confirm the existence of IIA and
IIB supergravity solutions having the appropriate p-brane bound states

Eigenvalue Estimates for submanifolds of with locally bounded mean curvature
We give lower bounds for the fundamental tone of open sets in submanifolds
with locally bounded mean curvature in , where is an
-dimensional complete Riemannian manifold with radial sectional curvature
. When the immersion is minimal our estimates are sharp. We
also show that cylindrically bounded minimal surfaces has positive fundamental

Free energy determination of phase coexistence in model C60: A comprehensive Monte Carlo study
The free energy of the solid and fluid phases of the Girifalco C60 model are
determined through extensive Monte Carlo simulations. In this model the
molecules interact through a spherical pair potential, characterized by a
narrow and attractive well, adjacent to a harshly repulsive core. We have used
the Widom test particle method and a mapping from an Einstein crystal, in order
to estimate the absolute free energy in the fluid and solid phases,
respectively; we have then determined the free energy along several isotherms,
and the whole phase diagram, by means of standard thermodynamic integrations.
We highlight how the interplay between the liquid-vapor and the liquid-solid
coexistence conditions determines the existence of a narrow liquid pocket in
the phase diagram, whose stability is assessed and confirmed in agreement with
previous studies. In particular, the critical temperature follows closely an
extended corresponding-states rule recently outlined by Noro and Frenkel [J.
Chem. Phys. 113:2941 (2000)].
We discuss the emerging "energetic" properties of the system, which drive the
phase behavior in systems interacting through short-range forces [A. A. Louis,
Phil. Trans. R. Soc. A 359:939 (2001)], in order to explain the discrepancy
between the predictions of several structural indicators and the results of
full free energy calculations, to locate the fluid phase boundaries.
More generally, we aim to provide extended reference data for calculations of
the free energy of the C60 fullerite in the low temperature regime, as for the
determination of the phase diagram of higher order fullerenes and other
fullerene-related materials, whose description is based on the same model

Superlens made of a metamaterial with extreme effective parameters
We propose a superlens formed by an ultra-dense array of crossed metallic
wires. It is demonstrated that due to the anomalous interaction between crossed
wires, the structured substrate is characterized by an anomalously high index
of refraction and supports strongly confined guided modes with very short
propagation wavelengths. It is theoretically proven that a planar slab of such
structured material makes a superlens that may compensate for the attenuation
introduced by free-space propagation and restore the subwavelength details of
the source. The bandwidth of the proposed device can be quite significant since
the response of the structured substrate is non-resonant. The theoretical
