Observation of magnetization reversal and negative magnetization in a double perovskite compound Sr2YbRuO6
Detailed magnetic properties of the compound Sr2YbRuO6 are presented here.
The compound belongs to the family of double perovskites forming a monoclinic
structure. Magnetization meas-urements reveal clear evidence for two components
of magnetic ordering aligned opposite to each other, leading to a magnetization
reversal, compensation temperature (T* = 34 K) and neg-ative magnetization at
low temperatures and low magnetic fields. Heat capacity measurements
corroborate the presence of two components in the magnetic ordering and a
noticeable third anomaly at low temperatures (~15 K) which cannot be attributed
the Schottky effect. The calcu-lated magnetic entropy is substantially lower
than that expected for the ground states of the or-dered moments of Ru5+ and
Yb3+, indicating the presence of large crystal field effects and/ or
in-complete magnetic ordering and/or magnetic frustrations well above the
magnetic ordering. An attempt is made to explain the magnetization reversal

Filtering wireless (Wi-Fi) internet access in public places
This paper discusses selected results from the AHRC-funded ‘Managing Access to the Internet in Public Librarie
s'
(MAIPLE) project and explores Wi-Fi Internet access in UK public libraries. It investigates how this compares to commercial provision of public Wi-Fi. It discusses security issues, filtering of Wi-Fi access and acceptable use policies. A mixed methods approach was used involving a review of the literature, a questionnaire survey of UK public library authorities and five case studies of selected authorities. A majority of UK public library authorities offer Wi-Fi access to the public at one or more of their libraries and they generally have an authentication system in place for their users. The majority of survey respondents that provide Wi-Fi use filtering software. There are similarities and differences in the ways that public libraries and commercial outlets provide and manage access to their wireless networks. Differences mainly relate to security and privacy: these differences reflect to an extent the underlying purposes of providing public Wi-Fi access as well as legal obligations. In some ways, public library Wi-Fi access is better managed than commercially provided public services. Evidence from the case studies suggests reluctant acceptance of filtering on the part of public library authorities, based on a perceived need to balance providing access to information with providing a safe and trusted public space for all
Psychosocial outcomes of an inclusive adapted sport and adventurous training course for military personnel.
PURPOSE: To explore the psychosocial outcomes of an inclusive adapted sport and adventurous training course that aims to support the rehabilitation and personal development of military personnel who have sustained physical and/or psychological disability. METHOD: Narrative life story interviews were conducted with 11 men aged 20-43 taking part in one of the 5-day courses. A thematic narrative analysis was conducted, focusing on accounts that provided insights into personally meaningful psychosocial outcomes of the course. FINDINGS: We identified six themes, falling into two distinct clusters. "Bringing me back to myself" was achieved through the themes of (1) returning to activity, (2) rediscovering a sense of purpose, and (3) reconnecting to others. "New rooms to explore" was realised through (4) experiencing new activities, (5) being valued/respected/cared for and (6) being inspired by other people. CONCLUSION: Involvement in the course stimulated a balance of present- and future-oriented psychosocial outcomes through which participants both recreated aspects of themselves that had been lost through injury/trauma and moved forward with their lives as a result of new horizons of possibility. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION: This 5-day inclusive adapted sport and adventurous training course offered meaningful psychosocial outcomes among military personnel who had experienced physical and/or psychological disability. The course helped participants recover aspects of their previous life and self through becoming physically active again, rediscovering a sense of purpose and reconnecting to others. Participants describe a broadening of life horizons as a result of the course, through new activities, being valued/respected/cared for, and being inspired by other people
Interactive Audio Augmented Reality in Participatory Performance
Interactive Audio Augmented Reality (AAR) facilitates collaborative storytelling and human interaction in participatory performance. Spatial audio enhances the auditory environment and supports real-time control of media content and the experience. Nevertheless, AAR applied to interactive performance practices remains under-explored. This study examines how audio human-computer interaction can prompt and support actions, and how AAR can contribute to developing new kinds of interactions in participatory performance.This study investigates an AAR participatory performance based on the theater and performance practice by theater maker Augusto Boal. It draws from aspects of multi-player audio-only games and interactive storytelling. A user experience study of the performance shows that people are engaged with interactive content and interact and navigate within the spatial audio content using their whole body. Asymmetric audio cues, playing distinctive content for each participant, prompt verbal and non-verbal communication. The performative aspect was well-received and participants took on roles and responsibilities within their group during the experience
Influence of Spin Wave Excitations on the Ferromagnetic Phase Diagram in the Hubbard-Model
The subject of the present paper is the theoretical description of collective
electronic excitations, i.e. spin waves, in the Hubbard-model. Starting with
the widely used Random-Phase-Approximation, which combines Hartree-Fock theory
with the summation of the two-particle ladder, we extend the theory to a more
sophisticated single particle approximation, namely the
Spectral-Density-Ansatz. Doing so we have to introduce a `screened`
Coulomb-interaction rather than the bare Hubbard-interaction in order to obtain
physically reasonable spinwave dispersions. The discussion following the
technical procedure shows that comparison of standard RPA with our new
approximation reduces the occurrence of a ferromagnetic phase further with

Periodicities In The X-Ray Intensity Variations of TV Columbae: An Intermediate Polar
We present results from a temporal analysis of the longest and the most
sensitive X-ray observations of TV Columbae--an intermediate polar. The
observations were carried out with the RXTE PCA, ROSAT PSPC, and ASCA. Data
were analyzed using a 1-dimensional CLEAN and Bayesian algorithms. The presence
of a nearly sinusoidal modulation due to the spin of the white dwarf is seen
clearly in all the data, confirming the previous reports based on the EXOSAT
data. An improved period of 1909.7+/-2.5s is derived for the spin from the RXTE
data.The binary period of 5.5hr is detected unambiguously in X-rays for the
first time. Several side-bands due to the interaction of these periods are
observed in the power spectra, thereby suggesting contributions from both the
disk-fed and the stream-fed accretion for TV Col. The accretion disk could
perhaps be precessing as side-bands due to the influence of 4 day period on the
orbital period are seen. The presence of a significant power at certain
side-bands of the spin frequency indicates that the emission poles are
asymmetrically located. The strong power at the orbital side-bands seen in both
the RXTE and ROSAT data gives an indication for an absorption site fixed in the
orbital frame. Both the spin and the binary modulation are found to be
energy-dependent. Increased hardness ratio during a broad dip in the intensity
at binary phase of 0.75--1.0 confirms the presence of a strong attenuation due
to additional absorbers probably from an impact site of the accretion stream
with the disk or magnetosphere. Hardness ratio variations and the energy
dependent modulation depth during the spin modulation can be explained by
partially covered absorbers in the path of X-ray emission region in the

Intergalactic UV Background Radiation Field
We have performed proximity effect analysis of low and high resolution data,
considering detailed frequency and redshift dependence of the AGN spectra
processed through galactic and intergalactic material. We show that such a
background flux, calculated using the observed distribution of AGNs, falls
short of the value required by the proximity effect analysis by a factor of
2.7. We have studied the uncertainty in the value of the required flux
due to its dependence on the resolution, description of column density
distribution, systemic redshifts of QSOs etc. We conclude that in view of these
uncertainties the proximity effect is consistent with the background
contributed by the observed AGNs and that the hypothesized presence of an

Carnot cycle for an oscillator
Carnot established in 1824 that the efficiency of cyclic engines operating
between a hot bath at absolute temperature and a bath at a lower
temperature cannot exceed . We show that linear
oscillators alternately in contact with hot and cold baths obey this principle
in the quantum as well as in the classical regime. The expression of the work
performed is derived from a simple prescription. Reversible and non-reversible
cycles are illustrated. The paper begins with historical considerations and is
