Surface pre-coating of talc particles by carboxyl methyl cellulose adsorption : study of adsorption and consequences on surface properties and settling rate

This paper investigates the adsorption of different sized carboxyl methyl cellulose (CMC) onto talc particles (adsorption isotherm, adsorption reversibility), its consequences on the particles properties (electrophoretic mobility and surface wetting) and its effect on their dispersion (settling coefficient). Throughout the paper, the properties of talc particles dispersed in CMC solution are compared to CMC pre-coated talc particles: talc particles dried in a solution of CMC before their redispersion. The adsorption of CMC onto talc was quantified at around 0.4 mg of CMC per m2 of talc and was seen to be irreversible on washing the talc particles with distilled water. When characterising talc surface properties, it was found that CMC adsorption leads to an increase of the negative surface charge and to an increase of the wettability. The settling velocity of CMC pre-coated talc particles in water can be around 50 % lower than that of the initial talc particles. The pre-coating of talc particles by CMC is then assumed to increase their stabilization : particle aggregation is hindered by adsorbed CMC layer inducing electrosteric repulsion between the talc particles. The technique of talc pre-coating with CMC makes the talc dispersion easier and could open interesting perspectives in engineering processes using talc dispersions

Les limites du droit international – Limits of international law. Essais en l’honneur de Joe Verhoeven – Essays in honour of Joe Verhoeven

Professeur à l'Université catholique de Louvain, puis à l'Université Panthéon-Assas (Paris 2), Secrétaire général de l'Institut de droit international, Joe Verhoeven occupe une place particulière dans la doctrine du droit international. Il intitula son cours général à l'Académie du droit international de La Haye « Considérations sur ce qui est commun ». C'est en quelque sorte en contrepoint (ou en complément) à ce titre que ce Liber amicorum est consacré à ce qui reste de « propre » à chaque État et aux règles du droit international qui protègent ce que Joe Verhoeven a intuitivement décrit comme relevant de la « vie privée » de chaque communauté nationale. Les trente contributions issues de cette réflexion plurielle (dont certaines sont rédigées en anglais) ont été regroupées sous quatre grandes thématiques : les limites du droit international et la « vie privée » des États ; les compétences de l'État à l'abri du droit international ; le droit international à l'épreuve de l'État et de l'intégration régionale ; la justice internationale au risque des limites de son propre droit

Professor at the Université catholique de Louvain, and later at the Université Panthéon-Assas (Paris 2), Secretary-General of the Institut de droit international, Joe Verhoeven holds a special place in international law doctrine. His general course at The Hague Academy was entitled “Considérations sur ce qui est commun” (“Reflexions about what is common”). As a counterpoint (or complement) to this title, this Liber amicorum is about the powers that States retain and the rules of international law which protect what Joe Verhoeven intuitively described as the “private life” of each national community. Thirty essays (most of them written in French) are the final result of this collective effort. They have been grouped under four general themes: The limits of International law and the “private life” of States; State competences not affected by international law; States and regional integration as a test for International law; International justice and the limits of its own law
