A new type of photoionized code required for the new era of X-ray spectroscopy

With the advent of the present and future spatial X-ray missions, it becomes crucial to model correctly the line spectrum of X-ray emitting media. We have built a photoionization code, Titan, solving the transfer of a thousand lines and of the continuum with the "Accelerated Lambda Iteration" method, which is most reliable for line transfer. In all other photoionization codes the line intensities are computed with the so-called "escape probability formalism", used in its simplest approximation. In a previous paper (Dumont et al. 2003), it was shown that this approximation leads to errors which can exceed one order of magnitude in the case a Thomson thickness of the order of unity. We show here that it also happens in the case of a Thomson thickness of 0.001 to 0.1. The errors on the line fluxes and line ratios are of the order of 30% for a column density of 10^{20} cm^{-2}, and a factor five for a column density of 10^{23} cm^{-2}, in conditions appropriate for Seyfert 2 and for the Warm Absorber of Seyfert 1.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures. accepted by A&

Leptin receptor in the chicken ovary: potential involvement in ovarian dysfunction of ad libitum-fed broiler breeder hens

In hens, the ovarian follicles committed to ovulation are arranged in an ordered follicular hierarchy. In standard broiler breeders hens genetically selected for high growth rate the reproductive function is clearly dysfunctional. Feed restriction is needed during reproductive development to limit the formation of excessive numbers of ovarian yellow follicles arranged in multiple hierarchies. To determine whether leptin is involved in the nutritional and reproductive interactions controlling follicular hierarchy in hens, blood leptin levels and ovarian expression of the leptin receptor mRNA were determined during follicle maturation in three chicken lines; a slow growing broiler "Label" genotype without reproductive dysfunction, a fast growing "Standard" genotype fed ad libitum or restricted and a fast growing "Experimental" line with intermediate reproductive performance levels. Whereas expression of the leptin receptor mRNA did not change in the theca, it clearly decreased with follicular differentiation in the granulosa of slow growing hens. In fast growing standard hens fed ad libitum and presenting significant reproductive dysfunction, the decrease was disrupted and dramatic up-regulation of granulosa cell expression of the leptin receptor was observed. On the other hand, feed restriction decreased the overall level of expression of the leptin receptor mRNA and restored the decrease with follicular growth. The level of expression of the leptin receptor probably modulates the action of leptin on follicular differentiation. Since blood leptin and other metabolic factors were not affected by the genotype or by nutritional state, the factors involved in the regulation of leptin receptor gene expression remain to be determined. This study demonstrates the involvement of leptin in the nutritional control of reproduction in birds. Leptin action on the ovary probably controls follicular hierarchy through the regulation of steroidogenesis

Universal spectral shape of AGN with high accretion rate

The spectra of radio quiet and NLS1 galaxies show suprising similarity in their shape. They seem to scale only with the accretion rate but not with central black hole mass. We consider two mechanisms modifying the disk spectrum. First, the outer parts of the disk are irradiated by the flux emerging from the inner parts. This is due to the scattering of the flux by the extended hot medium (warm absorber). Second process is connected with the development of the disk warm Comptonizing skin above the disk and/or coronae. Our scenario applies only to object with relatively high luminosity to the Eddington luminosity ratio for which disk evaporation is inefficient.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, Proc. of the meeting: "The Restless High-Energy Universe" (Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Redesigning the Senior Leader Engagement Program of the United States Africa Command

    Get PDF
AFRICOM conducts hundreds of senior leader engagements (SLEs) each year throughout the African continent in order to create strategic partnerships and military relationships that preserve American interests abroad. While AFRICOM has been planning and executing these engagements since the inception of the organization in 2008, it lacks a well-defined method to systemize its SLE process. As a result, SLE development is largely ad hoc, potentially decreasing the strategic effectiveness of the engagements and increasing their cost. This paper delineates a decision-making framework to redesign and enhance AFRICOM’s SLE program. In particular, it posits a multiple objective decision analysis model that quantifies key stakeholder values and develops several alternatives for future evaluation. Of note, potential solutions imagine a more expansive system where subsets of Senior Leaders (SLs) are assigned to clusters of African countries based on the SLs’ similarity to countries within each cluster, providing a basis for relationship ownership and mutual trust
