Time dependent neutrino billiards
Quantum dynamica of a massless Dirac particle in time-dependent 1D box and
circular billiard with time-dependent radius is studied. An exact analytical
wave functions and eigenvalues are obtained for the case of linear
time-dependence of the boundary position
Cosmic acceleration from second order gauge gravity
We construct a phenomenological theory of gravitation based on a second order
gauge formulation for the Lorentz group. The model presents a long-range
modification for the gravitational field leading to a cosmological model
provided with an accelerated expansion at recent times. We estimate the model
parameters using observational data and verify that our estimative for the age
of the Universe is of the same magnitude than the one predicted by the standard
model. The transition from the decelerated expansion regime to the accelerated
one occurs recently (at ).Comment: RevTex4 15 pages, 1 figure. Accepted for publication in Astrophysics

Some remarks on the dynamical systems approach to fourth order gravity
Building on earlier work, we discuss a general framework for exploring the
cosmological dynamics of Higher Order Theories of Gravity. We show that once
the theory of gravity has been specified, the cosmological equations can be
written as a first-order autonomous system and we give several examples which
illustrate the utility of our method. We also discuss a number of results which
have appeared recently in the literature.Comment: 19 pages, LaTe
Hamiltonian dynamics and Noether symmetries in Extended Gravity Cosmology
We discuss the Hamiltonian dynamics for cosmologies coming from Extended
Theories of Gravity. In particular, minisuperspace models are taken into
account searching for Noether symmetries. The existence of conserved quantities
gives selection rule to recover classical behaviors in cosmic evolution
according to the so called Hartle criterion, that allows to select correlated
regions in the configuration space of dynamical variables. We show that such a
statement works for general classes of Extended Theories of Gravity and is
conformally preserved. Furthermore, the presence of Noether symmetries allows a
straightforward classification of singularities that represent the points where
the symmetry is broken. Examples of nonminimally coupled and higher-order
models are discussed.Comment: 20 pages, Review paper to appear in EPJ
Cosmological constraints from galaxy clustering
In this manuscript I review the mathematics and physics that underpins recent
work using the clustering of galaxies to derive cosmological model constraints.
I start by describing the basic concepts, and gradually move on to some of the
complexities involved in analysing galaxy redshift surveys, focusing on the 2dF
Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) and the Sloan Digital Sky survey (SDSS).
Difficulties within such an analysis, particularly dealing with redshift space
distortions and galaxy bias are highlighted. I then describe current
observations of the CMB fluctuation power spectrum, and consider the importance
of measurements of the clustering of galaxies in light of recent experiments.
Finally, I provide an example joint analysis of the latest CMB and large-scale
structure data, leading to a set of parameter constraints.Comment: 30 pages, 13 figures. Lecture given at Third Aegean Summer School,

Horizontal Branch Stars: The Interplay between Observations and Theory, and Insights into the Formation of the Galaxy
We review HB stars in a broad astrophysical context, including both variable
and non-variable stars. A reassessment of the Oosterhoff dichotomy is
presented, which provides unprecedented detail regarding its origin and
systematics. We show that the Oosterhoff dichotomy and the distribution of
globular clusters (GCs) in the HB morphology-metallicity plane both exclude,
with high statistical significance, the possibility that the Galactic halo may
have formed from the accretion of dwarf galaxies resembling present-day Milky
Way satellites such as Fornax, Sagittarius, and the LMC. A rediscussion of the
second-parameter problem is presented. A technique is proposed to estimate the
HB types of extragalactic GCs on the basis of integrated far-UV photometry. The
relationship between the absolute V magnitude of the HB at the RR Lyrae level
and metallicity, as obtained on the basis of trigonometric parallax
measurements for the star RR Lyrae, is also revisited, giving a distance
modulus to the LMC of (m-M)_0 = 18.44+/-0.11. RR Lyrae period change rates are
studied. Finally, the conductive opacities used in evolutionary calculations of
low-mass stars are investigated. [ABRIDGED]Comment: 56 pages, 22 figures. Invited review, to appear in Astrophysics and

The Large Scale Structure in the Universe: From Power-Laws to Acoustic Peaks
The most popular tools for analysing the large scale distribution of galaxies
are second-order spatial statistics such as the two-point correlation function
or its Fourier transform, the power spectrum. In this review, we explain how
our knowledge of cosmic structures, encapsulated by these statistical
descriptors, has evolved since their first use when applied on the early galaxy
catalogues to the present generation of wide and deep redshift surveys,
incorporating the most challenging discovery in the study of the galaxy
distribution: the detection of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations.Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures, to appear in "Data Analysis in Cosmology",
