A semantic context management framework on mobile device
We present a semantic context management framework named ContextTorrent, which can make various types of context information be semantically searchable and sharable among local and remote context-aware applications. We implement this framework on the Google Android platform with its elegant application support. An open source RDF parser has been extended to effectively get RDF triples from files or over the network. Three embedded database systems were evaluated for storing ontology represented contexts in the resource-constrained mobile devices. We use the FOAF ontology schema and a synthetic data set of up to 2500 records to evaluate the context query and storage performance. Many-shot from Low-shot: Learning to Annotate using Mixed Supervision for Object Detection
Object detection has witnessed significant progress by relying on large,
manually annotated datasets. Annotating such datasets is highly time consuming
and expensive, which motivates the development of weakly supervised and
few-shot object detection methods. However, these methods largely underperform
with respect to their strongly supervised counterpart, as weak training signals
\emph{often} result in partial or oversized detections. Towards solving this
problem we introduce, for the first time, an online annotation module (OAM)
that learns to generate a many-shot set of \emph{reliable} annotations from a
larger volume of weakly labelled images. Our OAM can be jointly trained with
any fully supervised two-stage object detection method, providing additional
training annotations on the fly. This results in a fully end-to-end strategy
that only requires a low-shot set of fully annotated images. The integration of
the OAM with Fast(er) R-CNN improves their performance by mAP,
AP50 on PASCAL VOC 2007 and MS-COCO benchmarks, and significantly outperforms

Tracking the Trajectory of Functional Humoral Immune Responses Following Acute HIV Infection.
Increasing evidence points to a role for antibody-mediated effector functions in preventing and controlling HIV infection. However, less is known about how these antibody effector functions evolve following infection. Moreover, how the humoral immune response is naturally tuned to recruit the antiviral activity of the innate immune system, and the extent to which these functions aid in the control of infection, are poorly understood. Using plasma samples from 10 hyper-acute HIV-infected South African women, identified in Fiebig stage I (the FRESH cohort), systems serology was performed to evaluate the functional and biophysical properties of gp120-, gp41-, and p24- specific antibody responses during the first year of infection. Significant changes were observed in both the functional and biophysical characteristics of the humoral immune response following acute HIV infection. Antibody Fc-functionality increased over the course of infection, with increases in antibody-mediated phagocytosis, NK activation, and complement deposition occurring in an antigen-specific manner. Changes in both antibody subclass and antibody Fc-glycosylation drove the evolution of antibody effector activity, highlighting natural modifications in the humoral immune response that may enable the directed recruitment of the innate immune system to target and control HIV. Moreover, enhanced antibody functionality, particularly gp120-specific polyfunctionality, was tied to improvements in clinical course of infection, supporting a role for functional antibodies in viral control

MR Safe Robotic Manipulator for MRI-Guided Intracardiac Catheterization
This paper introduces a robotic manipulator to realize robot-assisted intracardiac catheterization in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) environment. MRI can offer high-resolution images to visualize soft tissue features such as scars or edema. We hypothesize that robotic catheterization, combined with the enhanced monitoring of lesions creation using MRI intraoperatively, will significantly improve the procedural safety, accuracy, and effectiveness. This is designed particularly for cardiac electrophysiological (EP) intervention, which is an effective treatment of arrhythmia. We present the first MR Safe robot for intracardiac EP intervention. The robot actuation features small hysteresis, effective force transmission, and quick response, which has been experimentally verified for its capability to precisely telemanipulate a standard clinically used EP catheter. We also present timely techniques for real-time positional tracking in MRI and intraoperative image registration, which can be integrated with the presented manipulator to im prove the performance of teleoperated robotic catheterization
Relevance similarity: an alternative means to monitor information retrieval systems
BACKGROUND: Relevance assessment is a major problem in the evaluation of information retrieval systems. The work presented here introduces a new parameter, "Relevance Similarity", for the measurement of the variation of relevance assessment. In a situation where individual assessment can be compared with a gold standard, this parameter is used to study the effect of such variation on the performance of a medical information retrieval system. In such a setting, Relevance Similarity is the ratio of assessors who rank a given document same as the gold standard over the total number of assessors in the group. METHODS: The study was carried out on a collection of Critically Appraised Topics (CATs). Twelve volunteers were divided into two groups of people according to their domain knowledge. They assessed the relevance of retrieved topics obtained by querying a meta-search engine with ten keywords related to medical science. Their assessments were compared to the gold standard assessment, and Relevance Similarities were calculated as the ratio of positive concordance with the gold standard for each topic. RESULTS: The similarity comparison among groups showed that a higher degree of agreements exists among evaluators with more subject knowledge. The performance of the retrieval system was not significantly different as a result of the variations in relevance assessment in this particular query set. CONCLUSION: In assessment situations where evaluators can be compared to a gold standard, Relevance Similarity provides an alternative evaluation technique to the commonly used kappa scores, which may give paradoxically low scores in highly biased situations such as document repositories containing large quantities of relevant data
Imbalanced functional link between executive control network and reward network explain the online-game seeking behaviors in Internet gaming disorder
Literatures have shown that Internet gaming disorder (IGD) subjects show impaired executive control and enhanced reward sensitivities than healthy controls. However, how these two networks jointly affect the valuation process and drive IGD subjects' online-game-seeking behaviors remains unknown. Thirty-five IGD and 36 healthy controls underwent a resting-states scan in the MRI scanner. Functional connectivity (FC) was examined within control and reward network seeds regions, respectively. Nucleus accumbens (NAcc) was selected as the node to find the interactions between these two networks. IGD subjects show decreased FC in the executive control network and increased FC in the reward network when comparing with the healthy controls. When examining the correlations between the NAcc and the executive control/reward networks, the link between the NAcc - executive control network is negatively related with the link between NAcc - reward network. The changes (decrease/increase) in IGD subjects' brain synchrony in control/reward networks suggest the inefficient/overly processing within neural circuitry underlying these processes. The inverse proportion between control network and reward network in IGD suggest that impairments in executive control lead to inefficient inhibition of enhanced cravings to excessive online game playing. This might shed light on the mechanistic understanding of IGD
Transkingdom Networks: A Systems Biology Approach to Identify Causal Members of Host-Microbiota Interactions
Improvements in sequencing technologies and reduced experimental costs have
resulted in a vast number of studies generating high-throughput data. Although
the number of methods to analyze these "omics" data has also increased,
computational complexity and lack of documentation hinder researchers from
analyzing their high-throughput data to its true potential. In this chapter we
detail our data-driven, transkingdom network (TransNet) analysis protocol to
integrate and interrogate multi-omics data. This systems biology approach has
allowed us to successfully identify important causal relationships between
different taxonomic kingdoms (e.g. mammals and microbes) using diverse types of
data
Quantum Phase Transition in a Resonant Level Coupled to Interacting Leads
An interacting one-dimensional electron system, the Luttinger liquid, is
distinct from the "conventional" Fermi liquids formed by interacting electrons
in two and three dimensions. Some of its most spectacular properties are
revealed in the process of electron tunneling: as a function of the applied
bias or temperature the tunneling current demonstrates a non-trivial power-law
suppression. Here, we create a system which emulates tunneling in a Luttinger
liquid, by controlling the interaction of the tunneling electron with its
environment. We further replace a single tunneling barrier with a
double-barrier resonant level structure and investigate resonant tunneling
between Luttinger liquids. For the first time, we observe perfect transparency
of the resonant level embedded in the interacting environment, while the width
of the resonance tends to zero. We argue that this unique behavior results from
many-body physics of interacting electrons and signals the presence of a
quantum phase transition (QPT). In our samples many parameters, including the
interaction strength, can be precisely controlled; thus, we have created an
attractive model system for studying quantum critical phenomena in general. Our
work therefore has broadly reaching implications for understanding QPTs in more

A linguistic approach to assess the dynamics of design team preference in concept selection
This paper addresses the problem of describing the decision-making process of a committee of engineers based upon their verbalized linguistic appraisals of alternatives. First, we show a way to model an individual’s evaluation of an alternative through natural language based on the Systemic-Functional Linguistics system of APPRAISAL. The linguistic model accounts for both the degree of intensity and the uncertainty of expressed evaluations. Second, this multi-dimensional linguistic model is converted into a scalar to represent the degree of intensity and a probability distribution function for the stated evaluation. Finally, we present a Markovian model to calculate the time-varying change in preferential probability, the probability that an alternative is the most preferred alternative. We further demonstrate how preferential probability toward attributes of alternatives correspond to preferential probability toward alternatives. We illustrate the method on two case studies to highlight the time-variant dynamics of preferences toward alternatives and attributes.
