Evidence for deviation in the metabolism of tyrosine in rheumatic fever. Preliminary communication
In 17 cases of rheumatic fever, I case of rheumatoid arthritis, I case of psoriasis with rheumatic manifestations and one case of ulcerative colitis compared to 9 control cases, were noted: (1) An increased ratio of phenylalanine to tyrosine in plasma. (2) An increase in the urinary output of phenolic acids.(3) The appearance of a substance in high amounts in urine. Evidence is afforded that this substance is 3-methoxy-4-hydroxy-phenyllactic acid. © 1963
