    The upper Hauterivian Barremian (Lower Cretaceous) Arrifes section (Algarve Basin, Southern Portugal): a palynostratigraphic and palaeoenvironmental approach

    ABSTRACT: Integrated sedimentological, palynological, and palynofacies analyses of the Arrifes section in the central Algarve Basin (southern Portugal) provided new information on the age and environments of this Lower Cretaceous sequence. The sedimentary succession at the Arrifes section consists of fossiliferous interbedded limestones, marly limestones, and marls, dated as latest Hauterivian to late Barremian age (Lower Cretaceous) based on key dinoflagellate taxa. During this interval, the Arrifes area records climatic shifts and, multiple sea-level fluctuations; overall deposition was in shallow subtidal to intertidal settings, with deposition of carbonate and marly sediments. During the latest Hauterivian to earliest Barremian interval, an evident sea-level fall culminated in the subaerial exposure of the local carbonate ramp with increased influx of clastic sediments. However, during the Barremian, both sedimentological and palynological analyses suggest an overall deepening of the water depth towards the top of the section. These overall increase in the water column are confirmed by oscillation of terrestrial/marine palynomorph groups and supported by dinosaur track levels at the top of the succession; the latter indicate that sedimentation occurred in intertidal to subtidal environments. Finally, an attempt was made to correlate the Arrifes section with other sections from the Algarve Basin, as well as with broader region. These new data suggest a setting in the Tethyan basin influenced during the latest Hauterivian to the end of the Barremian.     The age and depositional environments of the lower Karoo Moatize Coalfield of Mozambique: insights into the postglacial history of central Gondwana

    ABSTRACT: The Moatize Coalfield belongs to a network of continental Karoo basins of central Mozambique, known as the Zambezi Basin. Palynological and sedimentological studies were performed on four coal exploration boreholes to determine the age, depositional settings, and overall geological evolution of its extensive coal deposits. Clastic formations recognised in this coalfield, in ascending order, are the Vúzi, Moatize and Matinde formations. Palynomorph assemblages indicate that the Moatize Coalfield succession ranges from Roadian (lower Guadalupian) to Changhsingian (upper Lopingian) in age. Two main depositional phases are identified, whose initiation and development are attributed to regional tectonic events and climate amelioration. The first phase formed towards the end of the deglacial period, characterised initially by fan deltas, represented by the upper Vúzi Formation, and the shift to lake–delta environments, represented by the lower part of the Moatize Formation. This phase took place from Roadian to the Wordian times. The lake–delta settings indicate a sediment aggradation trend with high subsidence rates in the lake basin, which, together with the associated post-glacial climate amelioration, led to the accumulation of coal deposits in swamps of the delta top and lake margins. The second depositional phase took place from Capitanian to Changhsingian times and related to fluvial environments initiated by uplift that reorganised the depocenter into alluvial plains characterised by bedload dominated rivers (braided) and overbank floodplains. Results obtained in this study provide critical information for the onset of the deglaciation events and the age of coal deposits in this part of Gondwana, important for wider stratigraphic correlation of these events in Africa and throughout the Gondwana.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

    Health promoting potential of herbal teas and tinctures from Artemisia campestris subsp maritima: from traditional remedies to prospective products

    This work explored the biotechnological potential of the medicinal halophyte Artemisia campestris subsp. maritima (dune wormwood) as a source of health promoting commodities. For that purpose, infusions, decoctions and tinctures were prepared from roots and aerial-organs and evaluated for in vitro antioxidant, anti-diabetic and tyrosinase-inhibitory potential, and also for polyphenolic and mineral contents and toxicity. The dune wormwood extracts had high polyphenolic content and several phenolics were identified by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array-mass-spectrometry (UHPLC-PDA-MS). The main compounds were quinic, chlorogenic and caffeic acids, coumarin sulfates and dicaffeoylquinic acids; several of the identified phytoconstituents are here firstly reported in this A. campestris subspecies. Results obtained with this plant's extracts point to nutritional applications as mineral supplementary source, safe for human consumption, as suggested by the moderate to low toxicity of the extracts towards mammalian cell lines. The dune wormwood extracts had in general high antioxidant activity and also the capacity to inhibit a-glucosidase and tyrosinase.     Heterotic-Type II duality in the hypermultiplet sector

    We revisit the duality between heterotic string theory compactified on K3 x T^2 and type IIA compactified on a Calabi-Yau threefold X in the hypermultiplet sector. We derive an explicit map between the field variables of the respective moduli spaces at the level of the classical effective actions. We determine the parametrization of the K3 moduli space consistent with the Ferrara-Sabharwal form. From the expression of the holomorphic prepotential we are led to conjecture that both X and its mirror must be K3 fibrations in order for the type IIA theory to have an heterotic dual. We then focus on the region of the moduli space where the metric is expressed in terms of a prepotential on both sides of the duality. Applying the duality we derive the heterotic hypermultiplet metric for a gauge bundle which is reduced to 24 point-like instantons. This result is confirmed by using the duality between the heterotic theory on T^3 and M-theory on K3. We finally study the hyper-Kaehler metric on the moduli space of an SU(2) bundle on K3.Comment: 27 pages; references added, typos correcte

    Super Weyl invariance: BPS equations from heterotic worldsheets

    It is well-known that the beta functions on a string worldsheet correspond to the target space equations of motion, e.g. the Einstein equations. We show that the BPS equations, i.e. the conditions of vanishing supersymmetry variations of the space-time fermions, can be directly derived from the worldsheet. To this end we consider the RNS-formulation of the heterotic string with (2,0) supersymmetry, which describes a complex torsion target space that supports a holomorphic vector bundle. After a detailed account of its quantization and renormalization, we establish that the cancellation of the Weyl anomaly combined with (2,0) finiteness implies the heterotic BPS conditions: At the one loop level the geometry is required to be conformally balanced and the gauge background has to satisfy the Hermitean Yang-Mills equations.Comment: 1+31 pages LaTeX, 5 figures; final version, discussion relation Weyl invariance and (2,0) finiteness extended, typos correcte

    Pair Production of small Black Holes in Heterotic String Theories

    We study pair production of small BPS BH's in heterotic strings compactified on tori and in the FHSV model. After recalling the identification of small BH's in the perturbative BPS spectrum, we compute the tree-level amplitudes for processes initiated by massless vector bosons or gravitons. We then analyze the resulting cross sections in terms of energy and angular distributions. Finally, we briefly comment on scenari with large extra dimensions and on generalizations of our results to non-BPS, non-extremal and rotating BH's.Comment: 33 page

    State-space Manifold and Rotating Black Holes

    We study a class of fluctuating higher dimensional black hole configurations obtained in string theory/ MM-theory compactifications. We explore the intrinsic Riemannian geometric nature of Gaussian fluctuations arising from the Hessian of the coarse graining entropy, defined over an ensemble of brane microstates. It has been shown that the state-space geometry spanned by the set of invariant parameters is non-degenerate, regular and has a negative scalar curvature for the rotating Myers-Perry black holes, Kaluza-Klein black holes, supersymmetric AdS5AdS_5 black holes, D1D_1-D5D_5 configurations and the associated BMPV black holes. Interestingly, these solutions demonstrate that the principal components of the state-space metric tensor admit a positive definite form, while the off diagonal components do not. Furthermore, the ratio of diagonal components weakens relatively faster than the off diagonal components, and thus they swiftly come into an equilibrium statistical configuration. Novel aspects of the scaling property suggest that the brane-brane statistical pair correlation functions divulge an asymmetric nature, in comparison with the others. This approach indicates that all above configurations are effectively attractive and stable, on an arbitrary hyper-surface of the state-space manifolds. It is nevertheless noticed that there exists an intriguing relationship between non-ideal inter-brane statistical interactions and phase transitions. The ramifications thus described are consistent with the existing picture of the microscopic CFTs.
