"Galhofa e Música e Pernas" : o musical de Hollywood como outra arte qualquer

Esta tese constrói-se sobre a leitura e análise de seis filmes musicais do período clássico de Hollywood. Nela é discutida uma visão comum do género musical e aquilo que de mais influente a crítica escreveu sobre ele. Tanto a opinião popular como as descrições críticas, defende-se, acabam por negar ao musical os funcionamentos que costumamos reconhecer como característicos das diversas tradições artísticas. Os filmes analisados, porém, exibem esses funcionamentos de forma clara e particularmente reflexiva. O objectivo da investigação é o de sugerir uma redescrição do género musical e de Hollywood enquanto contexto de produção de filmes, mostrando o género como o lugar em que a indústria se repensa, discute os seus objectivos, os seus métodos e as suas regras.This thesis is built upon the readings and analyses of six classic Hollywood musical pictures. It discusses a common way of seeing the musical as well as the most influential critical accounts of the genre. It argues that both public opinion and critical assessments deny the musical the sort of workings that are usually seen as typical of artistic traditions. The readings of the films, however, reveal them to share this type of workings, in particularly reflexive ways. The aim of this investigation is to suggest a redescription of the musical genre and of Hollywood as a context for filmmaking, pointing the genre out as the place in which the industry evaluates itself and criticizes its own goals, methods, and rules

A análise das características do rap, enquanto género, remete para questões de validade ou validação artísticas que têm as suas raízes em problemas sociais e identitários. Também estes serão abordados, na medida em que contribuem para uma melhor compreensão do género, da sua evolução e das pessoas envolvidas nela.Abstract: The thesis consists of a discussion of rap music as a pop genre, as well as of several issues implied by this designation. The analysis of rap’s characteristics as a genre brings about questions of artistic validity or validation that have their roots in social and identity problems. These will also be approached, as they contribute to a better understanding of the genre, of its evolution and of the people involved in it
