    TURKISH SHIPBUILDING INDUSTRY – CHALLENGES AND POTENTIAL

    Shipbuilding industry was developed and grown in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Turkish shipbuilding industry started to develop in an international level around 15 years ago with specialization in small tonnage vessels. The global economic crisis that started in 2008 has affected the enhancement of shipbuilding industry in Turkey. This study addresses the important factors affecting the development of Turkish shipbuilding industry by focusing on the global shipbuilding during the crisis and the current state of the industry with the application of a survey to the key decision makers. The data was obtained from the survey collected from the Turkish shipyards and maritime companies that represent the considerable share of the industry. The surveys were conducted between 2012 and 2013. The current state of shipbuilding industry concerning the most relevant factors for the development of the industry according to the respondents has been designated, and it was seen that the highlighted factors were lower in the current state of the industry.     Blood donors and factors impacting the blood donation decision: Motives for donating blood in Turkish sample

    Background: Donations in Turkey are insufficient to cover the high transfusion needs arising from large numbers of thalassemia and sickle cell anemia patients and increasing demands for blood due to advanced surgery and cancer treatment. The most acceptable means to get blood is voluntary blood donation and the blood donor system in Turkey mostly depends on a combination of voluntary and involuntary donors. The main aim of this study is to explore the motivations of Turkish voluntary blood donors toward blood donation and to determine predictors of blood donation motivation. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional sample survey of active blood donors in Ankara, Turkey was conducted. The sample consisted of 189 male volunteer blood donor adults. Donors filled in a self-administered questionnaire including the measures of demographic information, empathetic concern, altruism, social responsibility and blood donation motivation questionnaire during donation. Results: Factor analysis of Blood Donation Motivation Measure with varimax rotation revealed a three-factor solution named as ‘‘values and moral duty’’, ‘‘positive feelings and esteem’’ and ‘‘self-benefit and external reasons’’. The results with regression analyses showed that only social responsibility had an significant effect independent of age, income, and education on blood donation motivation. Conclusion: These result reflects that blood donation motivation not only linked to a high degree of altruistic reasons, but also to a combination of some self-regarding motives. Additionally, feelings of empathy or altruism may be less strong at the time the decision to help, other factors may have a larger influence on helping decisions

    Bu çalışma, 2004-2007 yılları arasında Alata Bahçe Kültürleri Araştırma Enstitüsü’ne ait organik-topraklı, topraksız kültür (organik-inorganik yetiştirme ortamları) ve kontrol seralarında yürütülmüş olup, örtü altı organik domates yetiştiriciliğinde karşılaşılan hastalık, zararlı ve yabancı otlara karşı organik tarıma uygun mücadele yöntemlerinin uygulanabilirliği, en uygun sulama programı araştırılmıştır. Organik-topraklı sera ve organik-inorganik kökenli dört farklı yetiştirme ortamlarından oluşan topraksız kültür seralarında her türlü girdiler ve yapılacak işlemler Tarım Bakanlığınca yayımlanan organik tarım yönetmeliğe uygun olarak seçilmiştir. Organik-topraklı seradan elde edilen ürüne ‘organik ürün’ sertifikası alımına yönelik gerekli denetlemeler danışman kuruluş tarafından yapılarak ürün sertifikalandırılmıştır. Örtü altı organik domates yetiştiriciliğinde kültürel önlemlerden solarizasyonun yanı sıra yararlı mikrorganizmalardan da yararlanılması ile hastalık, zararlı ve yabancı ot kontrollerinde mücadele sayısının azaltıldığı ve verimde geleneksel yetiştiriciliğe oranla ekonomik anlamda bir azalma görülmediği sonucuna varılmıştır. Organik topraklı, kontrol serası ve farklı yetiştirme ortamlarında organik domates yetiştiriciliğinde su kullanım etkinliği değerleri her üç deneme yılında da artan sulama suyuna bağlı olarak azalma göstermiştir. Organik-inorganik kökenli farklı yetiştirme ortamlarından oluşan topraksız kültür yetiştiriciliğinin ise gerek topraktan kaynaklanan hastalık, nematod ve yabancı ot çıkışının olmaması gerekse erkenci olması açısından dolayı özellikle toprağın bulaşık olduğu alanlarda organik-topraklı tarıma alternatif bir yetiştiricilik olabileceği kanısına varılmıştır

    Land Ownership and Profitability of Greenhouse Production: Antalya Case

    Agricultural production and income are important for Mediterranean region of Turkey. The region and especially Antalya province is well-known with greenhouse production. For greenhouse production achieving sustainability is important for meeting domestic and foreign demand and security of production lands. In order to measure the potential for improving greenhouse operators 281 farmers were surveyed in 2015 in Antalya and profit inefficiency and factors affecting inefficiencies of operators were estimated using stochastic frontier approach. Accordingly, the average inefficiency level of operators was found as 57 %, signifying the potential for improvement. The main objective was to undermine the impact of landownership on this inefficiency level. Yet, the impact of other relevant factors referring to greenhouse structures and famers’ characteristics were estimated as well. While level of education seemed to reduce inefficiency, household size had appeared as an inefficiency rising factor referring to professional labour endowment of greenhouse production in Antalya. Being renter of land appeared as an inefficiency rising factor as well as holding plastic house or having located in the western parts of Antalya. These findings indicated importance of supporting improved production technologies and use of strengthened structures. In addition, it appeared as essential to provide incentives to renters to cope with their costs

    Pediatric diabetes consortium T1D New Onset ( NeOn ) study: clinical outcomes during the first year following diagnosis

    Objective There have been few prospective, multicenter studies investigating the natural history of type 1 diabetes ( T1D ) from the time of diagnosis. The objective of this report from the Pediatric Diabetes Consortium ( PDC ) T1D New Onset ( NeOn ) study was to assess the natural history and clinical outcomes in children during the first year after diagnosis of T1D . Research design and methods: Clinical measures from the first year following diagnosis were analyzed for 857 participants (mean age 9.1 yr, 51% female, 66% non‐Hispanic White) not participating in an intervention study who had a HbA1c result at 12 months. Results Mean HbA1c ± SD was 102 ± 25 mmol/mol (11.4 ± 2.3%) at diagnosis, 55 ± 12 mmol/mol (7.2 ± 1.1%) at 3 months, 56 ± 15 mmol/mol (7.3 ± 1.3%) at 6 months and 62 ± 16 mmol/mol (7.8 ± 1.5%) at 12 months from diagnosis. A severe hypoglycemic ( SH ) event occurred in 31 (4%) participants (44 events, 5.2 events per 100 person‐years). Diabetic ketoacidosis ( DKA ) not including diagnosis occurred in 10 (1%) participants (13 events, 1.5 events per 100 person‐years). Conclusions After onset of T1D , mean HbA1c reaches its nadir at 3–6 months with a gradual increase through 12 months. SH and DKA are uncommon but still occur during the first year with T1D . Data from large cohorts, such as the PDC T1D NeOn study, provide important insights into the course of T1D during the first year following diagnosis, which will help to inform the development of models to target future interventions.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/107374/1/pedi12068.pd

    Gender differences in diabetes self-care in adults with type 1 diabetes: Findings from the T1D Exchange clinic registry

    Aims To evaluate gender differences in diabetes self-care components including glycemic, blood pressure and lipid control, utilization of diabetes technologies and acute diabetes complications in adults with type 1 diabetes. Methods A total of 9,481 participants >18 years were included in the analysis, 53% were female. Variables of interest included glycemic control measured by HbA1c, systolic/diastolic blood pressures, presence of dyslipidemia, insulin delivery modality, and rates of acute complications. Results Glycemic control was similar in women and men (mean HbA1c in both groups: 8.1% ± 1.6% (64 ± 16 mmol/mol), (p = 0.54). More women used insulin pump therapy (66% vs. 59%, p < 0.001) but use of sensor technology was similar (p < = 0.42). Women had higher rates of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) (5% vs. 3%, p < 0.001) and eating disorders (1.7% vs. 0.1%, p < 0.001). Severe hypoglycemia rates were not different between men and women (p = 0.42). Smoking (6% vs 4%, p < 0.001), systolic (125 ± 14.2 vs. 121 ± 14.4, p < 0.001) and diastolic blood pressure (73.3 ± 9.5 vs. 72.2 ± 9.3, p < 0.001) and rate of dyslipidemia (28% vs. 23%, p < 0.001) were higher in men. Conclusion While glycemic control in type 1 diabetes was similar regardless of gender, rates of DKA and eating disorders were higher in women while rates of smoking, hypertension and dyslipidemia were higher in men

    Metformin Improves Peripheral Insulin Sensitivity in Youth With Type 1 Diabetes

    Context: Type 1 diabetes in adolescence is characterized by insulin deficiency and insulin resistance (IR), both thought to increase cardiovascular disease risk. We previously demonstrated that adolescents with type 1 diabetes have adipose, hepatic, and muscle IR, and that metformin lowers daily insulin dose, suggesting improved IR. However, whether metformin improves IR in muscle, hepatic, or adipose tissues in type 1 diabetes was unknown. Objective: Measure peripheral, hepatic, and adipose insulin sensitivity before and after metformin or placebo therapy in youth with obesity with type 1 diabetes. Design: Double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. Setting: Multi-center at eight sites of the T1D Exchange Clinic Network. Participants: A subset of 12- to 19-year-olds with type 1 diabetes (inclusion criteria: body mass index ≥85th percentile, HbA1c 7.5% to 9.9%, insulin dosing ≥0.8 U/kg/d) from a larger trial (NCT02045290) were enrolled. Intervention: Participants were randomized to 3 months of metformin (N = 19) or placebo (N = 18) and underwent a three-phase hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp with glucose and glycerol isotope tracers to assess tissue-specific IR before and after treatment. Main outcome measures: Peripheral insulin sensitivity, endogenous glucose release, rate of lipolysis. Results: Between-group differences in change in insulin sensitivity favored metformin regarding whole-body IR [change in glucose infusion rate 1.3 (0.1, 2.4) mg/kg/min, P = 0.03] and peripheral IR [change in metabolic clearance rate 0.923 (-0.002, 1.867) dL/kg/min, P = 0.05]. Metformin did not impact insulin suppression of endogenous glucose release (P = 0.12). Adipose IR was not assessable with traditional methods in this highly IR population. Conclusions: Metformin appears to improve whole-body and peripheral IR in youth who are overweight/obese with type 1 diabetes
