    Facilitate Insight by Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation

    Our experiences can blind us. Once we have learned to solve problems by one method, we often have difficulties in generating solutions involving a different kind of insight. Yet there is evidence that people with brain lesions are sometimes more resistant to this so-called mental set effect. This inspired us to investigate whether the mental set effect can be reduced by non-invasive brain stimulation. 60 healthy right-handed participants were asked to take an insight problem solving task while receiving transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to the anterior temporal lobes (ATL). Only 20% of participants solved an insight problem with sham stimulation (control), whereas 3 times as many participants did so (p = 0.011) with cathodal stimulation (decreased excitability) of the left ATL together with anodal stimulation (increased excitability) of the right ATL. We found hemispheric differences in that a stimulation montage involving the opposite polarities did not facilitate performance. Our findings are consistent with the theory that inhibition to the left ATL can lead to a cognitive style that is less influenced by mental templates and that the right ATL may be associated with insight or novel meaning.     Tumour sampling method can significantly influence gene expression profiles derived from neoadjuvant window studies

    Patient-matched transcriptomic studies using tumour samples before and after treatment allow inter-patient heterogeneity to be controlled, but tend not to include an untreated comparison. Here, Illumina BeadArray technology was used to measure dynamic changes in gene expression from thirty-seven paired diagnostic core and surgically excised breast cancer biopsies obtained from women receiving no treatment prior to surgery, to determine the impact of sampling method and tumour heterogeneity. Despite a lack of treatment and perhaps surprisingly, consistent changes in gene expression were identified during the diagnosis-surgery interval (48 up, 2 down; Siggenes FDR 0.05) in a manner independent of both subtype and sampling-interval length. Instead, tumour sampling method was seen to directly impact gene expression, with similar effects additionally identified in six published breast cancer datasets. In contrast with previous findings, our data does not support the concept of a significant wounding or immune response following biopsy in the absence of treatment and instead implicates a hypoxic response following the surgical biopsy. Whilst sampling-related gene expression changes are evident in treated samples, they are secondary to those associated with response to treatment.     In the last few decades, environment has become a contentious theme in Brazil’s national politics. The country’s environmental challenges are directly linked to its vibrant economic growth, which relies on primary industry with significant and growing energy demands. The increasing share of commodities in export value, from 23 percent in 2000 to 46.7 percent in 2012, has driven the so- called ‘ re- primarization’ of the economy (Figure 10.1). The national development program (Growth Acceleration Program), based on the expansion of agricultural land, energy production and infrastructure, has sparked harsh criticisms from civil society organizations and environmentalists regarding negative impacts such as biodiversity loss, erosion of ecosystem services and social disruptions (Fearnside, 2006; Zhouri and Laschefski, 2010). At the same time, the country hosts approximately 65 percent of a mega-biodiversity biome and important carbon sink, which makes land cover change a key environmental concern at the global scale. Pressured by its uncomfortable position as one of the top greenhouse gas (GHG) emitters, mostly from deforestation and land use (La Rovere et al., 2013), the government faces major conflict between carbon mitigation policies and the national development agenda, based on expansion of extractive industries

    Assessment of soft profile characteristics in Amazonian youngsters with normal occlusion

    OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to determine from a sample of Amazonian youngsters, with normal occlusion, the mean values for soft profile characteristics using cephalometric radiographs obtained in lateral norm. METHODS: The cephalometric radiographs of the 30 youngsters, being 15 males and 15 females, with mean age of 21.6 years old, were assessed. For statistical analysis, central tendencies and dispersion measurements (mean and standard deviation) were used and, for both the comparison of the mean values of males and females and the correlations between the measurements of the soft profile and bony profile, the unpaired Student's t-test was applied. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: After obtaining statistical data, parameters were set based on the cephalometric norms regarding the specialized literature, revealing that all variables presented a normal distribution pattern. There was sexual dimorphism for the following measurements: ANB, NAP, ANS-Me, N-ANS, Sn'-Me', and N'-SN'. Norms were determined for all the assessed measurements. Statistical differences were observed between the norm found in the present study and those found in the specialized literature
