    Alternative Model Selection Using Forecast Error Variance Decompositions in Wholesale Chicken Markets

    Although Vector Autoregressive models are commonly used to forecast prices, specification of these models remains an issue. Questions that arise include choice of variables and lag length. This article examines the use of Forecast Error Variance Decompositions to guide the econometrician’s model specification. Forecasting performance of Variance Autoregressive models, generated from Forecast Error Variance Decompositions, is analyzed within wholesale chicken markets.     This study compares subsurface drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation with respect to expected returns, aquifer life, nutrient utilization and accumulation in the production of irrigated corn using swine effluent and fresh groundwater from a depleting aquifer in the Oklahoma Panhandle. Most of the equations estimated econometrically had heteroskedasticity problems and MLE was used. The econometric estimation of a PDF of ammonia volatilization dependent on amount of nitrogen applied, for each irrigation system, was successful and is the basis for developing a stochastic chain for the soil nitrogen carryover equation.     Seed, Expand and Constrain: Three Principles for Weakly-Supervised Image Segmentation

    We introduce a new loss function for the weakly-supervised training of semantic image segmentation models based on three guiding principles: to seed with weak localization cues, to expand objects based on the information about which classes can occur in an image, and to constrain the segmentations to coincide with object boundaries. We show experimentally that training a deep convolutional neural network using the proposed loss function leads to substantially better segmentations than previous state-of-the-art methods on the challenging PASCAL VOC 2012 dataset. We furthermore give insight into the working mechanism of our method by a detailed experimental study that illustrates how the segmentation quality is affected by each term of the proposed loss function as well as their combinations.Comment: ECCV 201

Este es un estudio descriptivo y exploratorio, con enfoque teórico-metodológico cualitativo, realizado con 22 personas mayores inscritos en la Universidad de la Experiencia de la UB, en el curso acadêmico 2014-2015..

    Nicorandil preserves the function of the mitochondrial phosphorylative and oxidative system in an animal model of global ischemia-reperfusion

    Ischemia followed by reperfusion (IR) negatively affects mitochondrial function. At the level of the oxidative-phosphorylative system, IR inhibits the respiratory complexes and ATP synthase, and increases the passive leak of protons through the inner mitochondrial membrane, uncoupling respiration from phosphorylation, decreasing mitochondrial potential and, consequently, ATP production. Drugs that minimize the mitochondrial damage induced by IR may prove to be clinically effective. In the present work, we analyzed the impact of nicorandil, a mitochondrial ATP-sensitive potassium channel agonist, on mitochondrial dysfunction at the level of the oxidative-phosphorylative system of rat hearts subjected to IR. The decrease in the respiratory control ratio (RCR) induced by IR leads to the conclusion that IR has a negative impact on the activity of the mitochondrial respiratory system, uncoupling oxidation from phosphorylation. This effect is reversed by nicorandil, which increases not only RCR, but also the ADP/O ratio. Regarding respiratory rate, state 3 rate was approximately the same for all the experimental groups, while state 4 rate was lower for the group where IR was induced in the presence of nicorandil. This result is in accordance with the data obtained for the RCR and ADP/O. State 4 rate is most affected by uncoupling, given that it is controlled by proton leak. Mitochondria subjected to IR in the presence of nicorandil have a lower state 4 rate, i.e. they are less uncoupled. From these results we conclude that nicorandil preserves the function of mitochondria subjected to IR in terms of both respiration and phosphorylative capacity

    Co‐existing monophasic teratoma and uterine adenocarcinoma in a female dog

    Ovarian teratomas are occasionally reported in dogs; the rarest type is the monophasic teratoma,composed of tissues originating from only one germ layer. Canine endometrial adenocarcinomas are also rare in dogs and mainly affect geriatric females. This report describes case of co-existing ovarian teratoma and uterine adenocarcinoma in a 10-year old nulliparous female Boxer presented with lethargy, anorexia and purulent vaginal discharge. Abdominal ultrasonography evidenced pyometra and a mass in the left ovary. This was composed of a uniform whitish tissue with multiple cystic structures. The histology revealed an atrophy of the ovarian parenchyma, compressed by a proliferation of well-differentiated nervous tissue staining positively to vimentin, S100 and neuronal specific enolase (NSE), and negatively to keratin and inhibin. The left uterine horn, whose diameter was markedly increased, showed foci of endometrial cellular atypia, evident nucleoli and mitoses, at light microscopy. To our best knowledge, this is the first report of a coexisting ovarian monophasic teratoma and endometrial adenocarcinoma, two rare reproductive neoplasia in dogs

    Seasonal Thermal Sensation Vote - An indicator for long-term energy performance of dwellings with no HVAC systems

    Dwellings with no heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are commonly found in many countries. The long-term thermal performance of these buildings can be assessed based on hourly data of occupant thermal discomfort integrated over the required timespan (e.g. total degree hours of discomfort per year). This approach can be easily applied when simulation is adopted in the assessment, but field studies using this approach are rare as they would require complex, costly and long measurement/survey campaigns. This paper addresses the challenges on conducting field studies on long-term thermal performance of dwellings with no HVAC system by introducing a novel performance indicator: the Seasonal Thermal Sensation Vote (S-TSV). S-TSV adopts the standard 7-point thermal sensation scale and is based on the perceived overall thermal sensation recalled by the user of the building for specific seasons and times of day. The new performance indicator is not intended to replace existing ones, but to complement them in the understanding of the complex thermal performance processes taking place in buildings with no HVAC. S-TSV was applied in a field study targeting a small sample of dwellings in Brazil. Results demonstrate the capabilities of S-TSV to describe trends in buildings performance in this sample. S-TSV also assisted on the identification of relationships between such performance and some independent variables addressed in this field study (e.g. windows operation, footwear and income), considering a threshold of p-values <0.05 on the chi-square statistic test
