An investigation of particle mixing in a gas-fluidized bed
Mechanism for particle movement in gas-fluidized beds was studied both from the theoretical and experimental points of view. In a two-dimensional fluidized bed particle trajectories were photographed when a bubble passed through
Infinitesimal Variations of Hodge Structure at Infinity
By analyzing the local and infinitesimal behavior of degenerating polarized
variations of Hodge structure the notion of infinitesimal variation of Hodge
structure at infinity is introduced. It is shown that all such structures can
be integrated to polarized variations of Hodge structure and that, conversely,
all are limits of infinitesimal variations of Hodge structure (IVHS) at finite
points. As an illustration of the rich information encoded in this new
structure, some instances of the maximal dimension problem for this type of
infinitesimal variation are presented and contrasted with the "classical" case
of IVHS at finite points
Remote sensing in Iowa agriculture
The author has identified the following significant results. Results include the estimation of forested and crop vegetation acreages using the ERTS-1 imagery. The methods used to achieve these estimates still require refinement, but the results appear promising. Practical applications would be directed toward achieving current land use inventories of these natural resources. This data is presently collected by sampling type surveys. If ERTS-1 can observe this and area estimates can be determined accurately, then a step forward has been achieved. Cost benefit relationship will have to be favorable. Problems still exist in these estimation techniques due to the diversity of the scene observed in the ERTS-1 imagery covering other part of Iowa. This is due to influence of topography and soils upon the adaptability of the vegetation to specific areas of the state. The state mosaic produced from ERTS-1 imagery shows these patterns very well. Research directed to acreage estimates is continuing
Remote sensing in Iowa agriculture
The author has identified the following significant results. Analysis of 1972 single-date coverage indicated that a complete crop classification was not attainable at the test sites. Good multi-date coverage during 1973 indicates that many of the problems encountered in 1972 will be minimized. In addition, the compilation of springtime imagery covering the entire state of Iowa has added a new dimension to interpretation of Iowa's natural resources. ERTS-1 has provided data necessary to achieve the broad synoptic view not attainable through other means. This should provide soils and crop researchers and land use planners a base map of Iowa. Granted and due to the resolution of ERTS-1, not all details are observable for many land use planning needs, but this gives a general and current view of Iowa
Superconductivity in Inhomogeneous Hubbard Models
We present a controlled perturbative approach to the low temperature phase
diagram of highly inhomogeneous Hubbard models in the limit of small coupling,
, between clusters. We apply this to the dimerized and checkerboard models.
The dimerized model is found to behave like a doped semiconductor, with a
Fermi-liquid groundstate with parameters ({\it e.g.} the effective mass) which
are smooth functions of the Hubbard interaction, . By contrast, the
checkerboard model has a nodeless d-wave superconducting state (preformed pair
condensate, -BEC) for , which smoothly crosses over to an
intermediate BCS-like superconducting phase (-BCS), also with no nodal
quasi-particles, for , which gives way to a
Fermi liquid phase at large .Comment: 7 pages, a sign error in Eq.(3) has been corrected and its
consequence has been discussed with updated figure
Integrated technology rotor/flight research rotor concept definition study
As part of the Integrated Technology Rotor/Flight Research Rotor (ITR/FRR) Program a number of advanced rotor system designs were conceived and investigated. From these, several were chosen that best meet the started ITR goals with emphasis on stability, reduced weight and hub drag, simplicity, low head moment stiffness, and adequate strength and fatigue life. It was concluded that obtaining low hub moment stiffness was difficult when only the blade flexibility of bearingless rotor blades is considered, unacceptably low fatigue life being the primary problem. Achieving a moderate hub moment stiffness somewhat higher than state of the art articulated rotors in production today is possible within the fatigue life constraint. Alternatively, low stiffness is possible when additional rotor elements, besides the blades themselves, provide part of the rotor flexibility. Two primary designs evolved as best meeting the general ITR requirements that presently exist. An I shaped flexbeam with an external torque tube can satisfy the general goals but would have either higher stiffness or reduced fatigue life. The elastic gimbal rotor can achieve a better combination of low stiffness and high fatigue life but would be a somewhat heavier design and possibly exhibit a higher risk of aeromechanical instability
Inclusive neutrino scattering off deuteron from threshold to GeV energies
Background: Neutrino-nucleus quasi-elastic scattering is crucial to interpret
the neutrino oscillation results in long baseline neutrino experiments. There
are rather large uncertainties in the cross section, due to insufficient
knowledge on the role of two-body weak currents. Purpose: Determine the role of
two-body weak currents in neutrino-deuteron quasi-elastic scattering up to GeV
energies. Methods: Calculate cross sections for inclusive neutrino scattering
off deuteron induced by neutral and charge-changing weak currents, from
threshold up to GeV energies, using the Argonne potential and
consistent nuclear electroweak currents with one- and two-body terms. Results:
Two-body contributions are found to be small, and increase the cross sections
obtained with one-body currents by less than 10% over the whole range of
energies. Total cross sections obtained by describing the final two-nucleon
states with plane waves differ negligibly, for neutrino energies
MeV, from those in which interaction effects in these states are fully
accounted for. The sensitivity of the calculated cross sections to different
models for the two-nucleon potential and/or two-body terms in the weak current
is found to be weak. Comparing cross sections to those obtained in a naive
model in which the deuteron is taken to consist of a free proton and neutron at
rest, nuclear structure effects are illustrated to be non-negligible.
Conclusion: Contributions of two-body currents in neutrino-deuteron
quasi-elastic scattering up to GeV are found to be smaller than 10%. Finally,
it should be stressed that the results reported in this work do not include
pion production channels.Comment: 30 pages, 17 figures; publishe
Quantum Monte Carlo Calculations of Nuclei
The energies of , , and ground states, the
and scattering states of , the
ground states of , , and and the and
excited states of have been accurately calculated with the Green's
function Monte Carlo method using realistic models of two- and three-nucleon
interactions. The splitting of the isospin and
isospin , multiplets is also studied. The observed
energies and radii are generally well reproduced, however, some definite
differences between theory and experiment can be identified.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figur
Experimental and Theoretical Results for Weak Charge Current Backward Proton Production
In this paper, we do three things in the study of deuteron break-up by high
energy neutrino beams. (1) We present previously unpublished data on neutrino
induced backward protons from deuteron targets; (2) we calculate the
contributions from both the two-nucleon (2N) and six-quark (6q) deuteron
components, which depend upon the overall normalization of the part that is 6q;
and (3) we suggest other signatures for distinguishing the 2N and 6q clusters.
We conclude that the 6q cluster easily explains the shape of the high momentum
backward proton spectrum, and its size is nicely explained if the amount of 6q
is one or a few percent by normalization of the deuteron. There is a crossover,
above which the 6q contribution is important or dominant, at 300--400 MeV/c
backward proton momentum.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
Evaluating matrix elements relevant to some Lorenz violating operators
Carlson, Carone and Lebed have derived the Feynman rules for a consistent
formulation of noncommutative QCD. The results they obtained were used to
constrain the noncommutativity parameter in Lorentz violating noncommutative
field theories. However, their constraint depended upon an estimate of the
matrix element of the quark level operator (gamma.p - m) in a nucleon. In this
paper we calculate the matrix element of (gamma.p - m), using a variety of
confinement potential models. Our results are within an order of magnitude
agreement with the estimate made by Carlson et al. The constraints placed on
the noncommutativity parameter were very strong, and are still quite severe
even if weakened by an order of magnitude.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, RevTex, minor change
