Superhydrophobic and superoleophilic meshes have attracted great attention in oil/water separating application. However, superhydrophobic surfaces are not only complicated in preparation but also easy to break in practical applications. In this paper, we prepared fluorine-free hydrophobic hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS)-TiO2 coated meshes with properties of cost-effectiveness, easy to manufacture, and high separation efficiency by a liquid phase deposition method. The surface topography, composition, and functional groups of the meshes were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform microscopic infrared spectrometer (FT-IR) spectrum, respectively. A new gravity-driven oil/water separator was designed for the separation experiments. The separation efficiency of the hydrophobic HDTMS-TiO2 coated meshes maintained over 97.8% after 35 separating cycles. This study indicated that the superhydrophobicity of the separating mesh was nonessential for the highly efficient oil-water separation. The fluorine-free hydrophobic HDTMS-TiO2 coated meshes provided an economical and beneficial solution to treat industrial oily wastewater mixtures and environmental oil spills.</p

MsPrompt: Multi-step Prompt Learning for Debiasing Few-shot Event Detection

Event detection (ED) is aimed to identify the key trigger words in unstructured text and predict the event types accordingly. Traditional ED models are too data-hungry to accommodate real applications with scarce labeled data. Besides, typical ED models are facing the context-bypassing and disabled generalization issues caused by the trigger bias stemming from ED datasets. Therefore, we focus on the true few-shot paradigm to satisfy the low-resource scenarios. In particular, we propose a multi-step prompt learning model (MsPrompt) for debiasing few-shot event detection, that consists of the following three components: an under-sampling module targeting to construct a novel training set that accommodates the true few-shot setting, a multi-step prompt module equipped with a knowledge-enhanced ontology to leverage the event semantics and latent prior knowledge in the PLMs sufficiently for tackling the context-bypassing problem, and a prototypical module compensating for the weakness of classifying events with sparse data and boost the generalization performance. Experiments on two public datasets ACE-2005 and FewEvent show that MsPrompt can outperform the state-of-the-art models, especially in the strict low-resource scenarios reporting 11.43% improvement in terms of weighted F1-score against the best-performing baseline and achieving an outstanding debiasing performance

Overseas returnees who start or will start business in China is the key point of current overseas talent introduction work in China. However, during the overseas talent introducing process, it can be found out that the government has paid too much attention on talents’ “skills” but not their “competency” in entrepreneurship. This research constructs overseas returnees’ entrepreneurial competency model and ideal profile chart of their personality by doing research upon Wuxi city’s “530” overseas returnees who establish businesses in China. This research carries through BEI interviews and personality test on 43 overseas returnees and also does questionnaire surveys for 110 overseas returnees. Therefore, this research has developed the overseas returnees’ entrepreneurial competency assessment scale and also gives out related suggestions on the application of overseas returnees’ entrepreneurial competency model and ideal profile chart at last.Key words: Overseas talents; Entrepreneur; Competency; Personalit

Cryptopleurine Targets NF-ÎșB Pathway, Leading to Inhibition of Gene Products Associated with Cell Survival, Proliferation, Invasion, and Angiogenesis

Cryptopleurine, a phenanthroquinolizidine alkaloid, was known to exhibit anticancer activity; however, the underlying mechanism is poorly understood. Because the nuclear factor-ÎșB (NF-ÎșB) transcription factors control many physiological processes including inflammation, immunity, and development and progression of cancer, we investigated the effects of cryptopleurine on tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α)-induced NF-ÎșB activation pathway and on the expression of NF-ÎșB-regulated gene products associated with many pathophysiological processes.MDA-MB231, MDA-MB435, MCF-7, HEK293, RAW264.7 and Hep3B cells were used to examine cryptopleurine's effect on the NF-ÎșB activation pathway. Major assays were promoter-reporter gene assay, electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA), in vitro immune complex kinase assay, real-time PCR, Western blot analysis, and Matrigel invasion assay. Experiments documenting cell proliferation and apoptosis were analyzed by MTT method and flow cytometry, respectively. The results indicated that cryptopleurine suppressed the NF-ÎșB activation through the inhibition of IÎșB kinase (IKK) activation, thereby blocking the phosphorylation and degradation of the inhibitor of NF-ÎșB alpha (IÎșBα) and the nuclear translocation and DNA-binding activity of p65. The suppression of NF-ÎșB by cryptopleurine led to the down-regulation of gene products involved in inflammation, cell survival, proliferation, invasion, and angiogenesis. Our results show that cryptopleurine inhibited NF-ÎșB activation pathway, which leads to inhibition of inflammation, proliferation, and invasion, as well as potentiation of apoptosis. Our findings provide a new insight into the molecular mechanisms and a potential application of cryptopleurine for inflammatory diseases as well as certain cancers associated with abnormal NF-ÎșB activation

Causal association between serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D levels and cutaneous melanoma: a two-sample Mendelian randomization study

    Get PDF
BackgroundDespite numerous observational studies on the association between serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D levels and cutaneous melanoma, causal inferences remain ambiguous due to confounding and reverse causality. This study aimed to elucidate the causal relationship between serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D levels and melanoma incidence using Mendelian randomization (MR).MethodsA two-sample MR was conducted using genetic variants associated with serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D levels as instrumental variables. Summary statistics for these variants were derived from genome-wide association studies, and those for melanoma risk were obtained from a comprehensive melanoma case-control study. Robustness of the results was assessed through sensitivity analyses, including the “leave-one-out” approach and tests for potential pleiotropy.ResultsThe MR analysis provided substantial evidence of a positive causal relationship between serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D levels and the incidence of cutaneous melanoma, suggesting that each unit increase in serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D levels corresponds with an increased risk of melanoma. Tests for pleiotropy showed minimal effects, and the sensitivity analysis confirmed no disproportionate influence by any individual single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP).ConclusionThe findings indicated a potentially causal positive association between serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D levels and melanoma risk, challenging traditional beliefs about vitamin D’s role in melanoma. This emphasizes the need for a balanced and personalized approach to vitamin D supplementation and sun exposure, particularly in high-risk populations. These results should be interpreted with caution due to potential unrecognized pleiotropy and confounding factors. Future research should focus on validating these findings in diverse populations and exploring underlying biological mechanisms
