    Making the market: How U.S. Policy influences near term agriculture and biofuel industry production and profitability under technology adoption

    The beneficiaries of technology adoption in agriculture and biofuels markets in the United States are heavily influenced by domestic biofuel policies and market context. Biofuel mandates, one of the key pillars of domestic biofuel policies, may significantly alter the elasticity of demand for biofuels as well as the derived demand for maize used to produce a significant share of ethanol in the United States.     This paper develops the structure and closure of an econometric regime-switching model within a partial equilibrium framework that has the ability to generate reliable estimates and projections of endogenous variables under market switching regimes. Models used in policy evaluation usually either ignore the possibility of regime switching using just a single method of price determination based on average effects, or incorporate highly stylised components that may not reflect the complexities of a particular market.     Characterizing Scales of Genetic Recombination and Antibiotic Resistance in Pathogenic Bacteria Using Topological Data Analysis

    Pathogenic bacteria present a large disease burden on human health. Control of these pathogens is hampered by rampant lateral gene transfer, whereby pathogenic strains may acquire genes conferring resistance to common antibiotics. Here we introduce tools from topological data analysis to characterize the frequency and scale of lateral gene transfer in bacteria, focusing on a set of pathogens of significant public health relevance. As a case study, we examine the spread of antibiotic resistance in Staphylococcus aureus. Finally, we consider the possible role of the human microbiome as a reservoir for antibiotic resistance genes.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures.     Effect of GaN surface treatment on Al2O3/n-GaN MOS capacitors

Journal of Vacuum Science and Technology B: Nanotechnology and Microelectronics, 33(6). doi:10.1116/1.4931793The surface preparation for depositing Al2O3 for fabricating Au/Ni/Al2O3/n-GaN (0001) metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) capacitors was optimized as a step toward realization of high performance GaN MOSFETs. The GaN surface treatments studied included cleaning with piranha (H2O2:H2SO4 = 1:5), (NH4)2S, and 30% HF etches. By several metrics, the MOS capacitor with the piranha-etched GaN had the best characteristics. It had the lowest capacitance–voltage hysteresis, the smoothest Al2O3 surface as determined by atomic force microscopy (0.2 nm surface roughness), the lowest carbon concentration (∼0.78%) at the Al2O3/n-GaN interface (from x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), and the lowest oxide-trap charge (QT = 1.6 × 1011 cm−2eV−1). Its interface trap density (Dit = 3.7 × 1012 cm−2eV−1), as measured with photon-assisted capacitance– voltage method, was the lowest from conduction band-edge to midgap

    Shear viscosity of the Quark-Gluon Plasma from a virial expansion

    We calculate the shear viscosity η\eta in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) phase within a virial expansion approach with particular interest in the ratio of η\eta to the entropy density ss, i.e. η/s\eta/s. The virial expansion approach allows us to include the interactions between the partons in the deconfined phase and to evaluate the corrections to a single-particle partition function. In the latter approach we start with an effective interaction with parameters fixed to reproduce thermodynamical quantities of QCD such as energy and/or entropy density. We also directly extract the effective coupling \ga_{\rm V} for the determination of η\eta. Our numerical results give a ratio η/s0.097\eta/s\approx 0.097 at the critical temperature TcT_{\rm c}, which is very close to the theoretical bound of 1/(4π)1/(4\pi). Furthermore, for temperatures T1.8TcT\leq 1.8 T_{\rm c} the ratio η/s\eta/s is in the range of the present experimental estimates 0.10.30.1-0.3 at RHIC. When combining our results for η/s\eta/s in the deconfined phase with those from chiral perturbation theory or the resonance gas model in the confined phase we observe a pronounced minimum of η/s\eta/s close to the critical temperature TcT_{\rm c}.Comment: Published in Eur.     Random Time-Dependent Quantum Walks

    We consider the discrete time unitary dynamics given by a quantum walk on the lattice Zd\Z^d performed by a quantum particle with internal degree of freedom, called coin state, according to the following iterated rule: a unitary update of the coin state takes place, followed by a shift on the lattice, conditioned on the coin state of the particle. We study the large time behavior of the quantum mechanical probability distribution of the position observable in Zd\Z^d when the sequence of unitary updates is given by an i.i.d. sequence of random matrices. When averaged over the randomness, this distribution is shown to display a drift proportional to the time and its centered counterpart is shown to display a diffusive behavior with a diffusion matrix we compute. A moderate deviation principle is also proven to hold for the averaged distribution and the limit of the suitably rescaled corresponding characteristic function is shown to satisfy a diffusion equation. A generalization to unitary updates distributed according to a Markov process is also provided. An example of i.i.d. random updates for which the analysis of the distribution can be performed without averaging is worked out. The distribution also displays a deterministic drift proportional to time and its centered counterpart gives rise to a random diffusion matrix whose law we compute. A large deviation principle is shown to hold for this example. We finally show that, in general, the expectation of the random diffusion matrix equals the diffusion matrix of the averaged distribution.Comment: Typos and minor errors corrected.     Correlated Markov Quantum Walks

    We consider the discrete time unitary dynamics given by a quantum walk on Zd\Z^d performed by a particle with internal degree of freedom, called coin state, according to the following iterated rule: a unitary update of the coin state takes place, followed by a shift on the lattice, conditioned on the coin state of the particle. The random sequences of unitary updates are given by a site dependent function of a Markov chain in time, with the following properties: on each site, they share the same stationnary Markovian distribution and, for each fixed time, they form a deterministic periodic pattern on the lattice. We prove a Feynman-Kac formula to express the characteristic function of the averaged distribution over the randomness at time nn in terms of the nth power of an operator MM. By analyzing the spectrum of MM, we show that this distribution posesses a drift proportional to the time and its centered counterpart displays a diffusive behavior with a diffusion matrix we compute. Moderate and large deviations principles are also proven to hold for the averaged distribution and the limit of the suitably rescaled corresponding characteristic function is shown to satisfy a diffusion equation. An example of random updates for which the analysis of the distribution can be performed without averaging is worked out.
