    Self-complementary graphs and Ramsey numbers Part I: the decomposition and construction of self-complementary graphs

    AbstractA new method of studying self-complementary graphs, called the decomposition method, is proposed in this paper. Let G be a simple graph. The complement of G, denoted by Ḡ, is the graph in which V(Ḡ)=V(G); and for each pair of vertices u,v in Ḡ,uv∈E(Ḡ) if and only if uv∉E(G). G is called a self-complementary graph if G and Ḡ are isomorphic. Let G be a self-complementary graph with the vertex set V(G)={v1,v2,…,v4n}, where dG(v1)⩽dG(v2)⩽⋯⩽dG(v4n). Let H=G[v1,v2,…,v2n],H′=G[v2n+1,v2n+2,…,v4n] and H∗=G−E(H)−E(H′). Then G=H+H′+H∗ is called the decomposition of the self-complementary graph G.In part I of this paper, the fundamental properties of the three subgraphs H,H′ and H∗ of the self-complementary graph G are considered in detail at first. Then the method and steps of constructing self-complementary graphs are given. In part II these results will be used to study certain Ramsey number problems (see (II))

    Do Chinese Stock Markets React To The Newspaper Recommendations?

    This paper studies how the stock prices in Chinese stock markets react to the stock recommendations from a Chinese business newspaper Zhong Guo Zheng Quan Bao (China Security). Using event study methodology and market model as a benchmark, we calculate abnormal returns to ascertain the impact of published recommendations. We find that there are no statistically significant long-term abnormal returns associated with the published recommendations. However, there are profitable opportunities if investors act prior to the published recommendations. We also find that the recommendations from the newspaper causes a significant short term movement two days after the publication day, suggesting a delayed response from the investors who act on the recommendation. The delayed response shows the gradual dissemination of the information in Chinese stock markets. In summary, these results indicate that press recommendations of Chinese stocks contain no useful economic information for investors who act on the published recommendations. The possible abnormal returns for investors who buy the stocks before the recommendations are made public are evidence of a market that is strong-form inefficient and the delayed response from investors to the newspaper recommendations is most likely the evidence of a market that is semi-strong-form inefficient

    In-Plane Magnetic Anisotropy In RF Sputtered Fe-N Thin Films

    We have fabricated Fe(N) thin films with varied N2 partial pressure and studied the microstructure, morphology, magnetic properties and resistivity by using X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, vibrating-sample magnetometer and angle-resolved M-H hysteresis Loop tracer and standard four-point probe method. In the presence of low N2 partial pressure, Fe(N) films showed a basic bcc a-Fe structure with a preferred (110) texture. A variation of in-plane magnetic anisotropy of the Fe(N) films was observed with the changing of N component. The evolution of in-plane anisotropy in the films was attributed to the directional order mechanism. Nitrogen atoms play an important role in refining the a-Fe grains and inducing uniaxial anisotropy.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure

    The release of toxic oligomers from a-synuclein fibrils induces dysfunction in neuronal cells

    The self-assembly of a-synuclein (aS) into intraneuronal inclusion bodies is a key characteristic of Parkinson’s disease. To define the nature of the species giving rise to neuronal damage, we have investigated the mechanism of action of the main aS populations that have been observed to form progressively during fibril growth. The aS fibrils release soluble prefibrillar oligomeric species with cross-ß structure and solvent-exposed hydrophobic clusters. aS prefibrillar oligomers are efficient in crossing and permeabilize neuronal membranes, causing cellular insults. Short fibrils are more neurotoxic than long fibrils due to the higher proportion of fibrillar ends, resulting in a rapid release of oligomers. The kinetics of released aS oligomers match the observed kinetics of toxicity in cellular systems. In addition to previous evidence that aS fibrils can spread in different brain areas, our in vitro results reveal that aS fibrils can also release oligomeric species responsible for an immediate dysfunction of the neurons in the vicinity of these species

    Lattice Boltzmann for Binary Fluids with Suspended Colloids

    A new description of the binary fluid problem via the lattice Boltzmann method is presented which highlights the use of the moments in constructing two equilibrium distribution functions. This offers a number of benefits, including better isotropy, and a more natural route to the inclusion of multiple relaxation times for the binary fluid problem. In addition, the implementation of solid colloidal particles suspended in the binary mixture is addressed, which extends the solid-fluid boundary conditions for mass and momentum to include a single conserved compositional order parameter. A number of simple benchmark problems involving a single particle at or near a fluid-fluid interface are undertaken and show good agreement with available theoretical or numerical results.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, ICMMES 200

    Remarks on self-interaction correction to black hole radiation

    In the work [P. Kraus and F. Wilczek, \textit{Self-interaction correction to black hole radiation, Nucl. Phys.} B433 (1995) 403], it has been pointed out that the self-gravitation interaction would modify the black hole radiation so that it is no longer thermal, where it is, however, corrected in an approximate way and therefore is not established its relationship with the underlying unitary theory in quantum theory. In this paper, we revisit the self-gravitation interaction to Hawking radiation of the general spherically symmetric black hole, and find that the precisely derived spectrum is not only deviated from the purely thermal spectrum, but most importantly, is related to the change of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and consistent with an underlying unitary theory.Comment: 14 page

    Conservation Laws and Sum Rules in the Heavy Quark Limit

    In the heavy quark limit, hadrons appear as eigenstates of the light degrees of freedom under the static color field of the heavy quark. In this formalism, the weak form factors appear naturally as the overlaps of the initial and final wavefunctions of the light degrees of freedom, and the Bjorken and Voloshin sum rules are statements of conservation of probability and energy. Moreover, parity conservation can lead to a sum rule which relates weak form factors at different kinematic points. {}From this sum rule, model independent lower bounds on Isgur--Wise form factors can be obtained analytically.Comment: 14 pages.
