    A process model recognising prior learning of informal sector motor mechanics

    The informal sector serves as a reservoir of skilled unqualified individuals who learned and practice the motor mechanic trade outside the formal sector. This article reports on a process model for recognition of prior learning of informal sector motor mechanics and to integrate them into the formal sector training and ultimately employment. Formal sector motor mechanic training does not acknowledge non-formal learning of the informal sector.The process model identifies specific entry points into the formal sector training.The study was exploratory in nature with a qualitative research design applied. Semi-structured interviews through a purposive snowball sample technique were used. The data were analysed utilising the ATLAS.ti 7.0 program. The findings conceptualises a process model, backed by a process of gap training, to recognise the prior learning of the informal sector motor mechanic. This research could engage SETAs in the funding of training of informal practising motor mechanic

    Density Matrix Renormalisation Group Approach to the Massive Schwinger Model

    The massive Schwinger model is studied, using a density matrix renormalisation group approach to the staggered lattice Hamiltonian version of the model. Lattice sizes up to 256 sites are calculated, and the estimates in the continuum limit are almost two orders of magnitude more accurate than previous calculations. Coleman's picture of `half-asymptotic' particles at background field theta = pi is confirmed.     Pedestrian Solution of the Two-Dimensional Ising Model

    The partition function of the two-dimensional Ising model with zero magnetic field on a square lattice with m x n sites wrapped on a torus is computed within the transfer matrix formalism in an explicit step-by-step approach inspired by Kaufman's work. However, working with two commuting representations of the complex rotation group SO(2n,C) helps us avoid a number of unnecessary complications. We find all eigenvalues of the transfer matrix and therefore the partition function in a straightforward way.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures; eqs.     Neurotoxicity in calves induced by the plant, Nierembergia hippomanica Miers var. violacea Millan in South Africa

    The plant Nierembergia hippomanica var. violacea has been incriminated in field outbreaks of neurotoxicity in calves in the Free State Province. Hepatotoxicity and electrocardiogram (ECG) deviations were induced in a sheep dosed with 5 g/kg dried plant material on four consecutive days. A calf dosed with 2,5 g/kg dried plant material, on two consecutive days, did not show overt clinical changes. Voluntary ingestion of approximately 30 g/kg fresh flowering plants by a second calf resulted in nervous signs characterized by chewing motions, protrusion of the tongue, dysphagia, hypermetria, ataxia, paresis and lateral recumbency. Salivation, dehydration and cardiac irregularities completed the clinical picture. Clinical chemistry changes revealed muscle damage and increased serum urea and creatinine concentrations indicative of kidney involvement. This is the first confirmed outbreak of Nierembergia hippomanica var. violacea intoxication of stock in South Africa.The articles have been scanned in colour with a HP Scanjet 5590; 600dpi.     Krimpsiekte in a sheep following a single dose of Tylecodon ventricosus (Burm. f.) Toelken and the isolation of tyledoside D from this plant species

    Tylecodon ventricosus induced severe respiratory distress in two penned sheep without any electrocardiographic abnormalities being recorded. Based on the results it appears as if T. ventricosus predominantly induces the neuromuscular syndrome referred to as krimpsiekte. A single, relatively large intraruminal dose of 10,0 g/kg induced krimpsiekte in one sheep. Treatment with 5,0 g/kg activated charcoal on two consecutive days did not prevent the development of krimpsiekte.     Concentration Dependence of Superconductivity and Order-Disorder Transition in the Hexagonal Rubidium Tungsten Bronze RbxWO3. Interfacial and bulk properties

    We revisited the problem of the stability of the superconducting state in RbxWO3 and identified the main causes of the contradictory data previously published. We have shown that the ordering of the Rb vacancies in the nonstoichiometric compounds have a major detrimental effect on the superconducting temperature Tc.The order-disorder transition is first order only near x = 0.25, where it cannot be quenched effectively and Tc is reduced below 1K. We found that the high Tc's which were sometimes deduced from resistivity measurements, and attributed to compounds with .25 < x < .30, are to be ascribed to interfacial superconductivity which generates spectacular non-linear effects. We also clarified the effect of acid etching and set more precisely the low-rubidium-content boundary of the hexagonal phase.This work makes clear that Tc would increase continuously (from 2 K to 5.5 K) as we approach this boundary (x = 0.20), if no ordering would take place - as its is approximately the case in CsxWO3. This behaviour is reminiscent of the tetragonal tungsten bronze NaxWO3 and asks the same question : what mechanism is responsible for this large increase of Tc despite the considerable associated reduction of the electron density of state ? By reviewing the other available data on these bronzes we conclude that the theoretical models which are able to answer this question are probably those where the instability of the lattice plays a major role and, particularly, the model which call upon local structural excitations (LSE), associated with the missing alkali atoms.Comment: To be published in Physical Review

    Perinatal mortality in lambs of ewes exposed to cultures of Diplodia maydis (= Stenocarpella maydis) during gestation

    During 1987 when cob rot was rife, perinatal losses were reported in flocks and herds that had been exposed to diplodiosis. The affected lambs or calves were either stillborn or died soon after birth. Dosing trials at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Research Institute involving 82 ewes revealed that 66% of the offspring of dams exposed to cultures of Diplodia maydis (= Stenocarpella maydis) in the second trimester of pregnancy and 87% of lambs of ewes exposed in the third trimester were born dead or died soon afterwards. A status spongiosus similar to that of the field cases was present in the white matter of the brains of all the affected lambs. The lambs of ewes that had shown nervous signs and those of ewes that had not shown such signs were equally affected. The experiments also clearly demonstrated that foetuses were much more susceptible to diplodiosis than the adults, e.g. in the third trimester 87% of the lambs were affected compared to only 44% of the dams. No perinatal mortalities were recorded in the group exposed to the culture in the first trimester. Ewes developed significant resistance to intoxication after initial exposure to the culture and both the length of gestation and birth mass of the affected lambs were less than those of their untreated counterparts.The articles have been scanned in colour with a HP Scanjet 5590; 600dpi.     Krimpsiekte, associated with thalamic lesions, induced by the neurotoxic cardiac glycoside, cotyledoside, isolated from Tylecodon wallichii (Harv.) Toelken subsp. wallichii

    The specific neurotoxic principle of Tylecodon wallichii (Harv.) Toelken subsp. wallichii, the cause of krimpsiekte in small stock, was isolated and identified as the previously described cumulative bufadienolide, cotyledoside. Krimpsiekte was experimentally induced in two sheep by the repeated intravenous administration of cotyledoside at the rate of 0,01-0,015 mg/kg body mass. On day 9, both animals developed clinical signs typical of krimpsiekte, which is characterized by tremors, paresis and recumbency. Both sheep had difficulty in controlling their hindquarters when attempting to lie down. No significant electrocardiograph abnormalities were detected during the experiment which confirms that cotyledoside at low doses does not overtly affect the electrical activity of the heart. No gross lesions were observed in the sheep. The most significant microscopic lesions comprised mild brain oedema and pronounced vacuolation of the white matter of thalamic nuclei. These lesions might explain some of the motor function deficiencies clinically observed in this syndrome. The previously held contention that these neurotoxic cardiac glycosides are indeed the cause of krimpsiekte is, therefore, confirmed.The articles have been scanned in colour with a HP Scanjet 5590; 600dpi.     Everolimus-eluting bioresorbable vascular scaffolds for treatment of patients presenting with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction: BVS STEMI first study

    AimsWe evaluated the feasibility and the acute performance of the everolimus-eluting bioresorbable vascular scaffolds (BVS) for the treatment of patients presenting with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).Methods and resultsThe present investigation is a prospective, single-arm, single-centre study, reporting data after the BVS implantation in STEMI patients. Quantitative coronary angiography and optical coherence tomography (OCT) data were evaluated. Clinical outcomes are reported at the 30-day follow-up. The intent-to-treat population comprises a total of 49 patients. The procedural success was 97.9%. Pre-procedure TIMI-flow was 0 in 50.0% of the patients; after the BVS implantation, a TIMI-flow III was achieved in 91.7% of patients and the post-procedure percentage diameter stenosis was 14.7 ± 8.2%. No patients had angiographically visible residual thrombus at the end of the procedure. Optical coherence tomography analysis performed in 31 patients showed that the post-procedure mean lumen area was 8.02 ± 1.92 mm2, minimum lumen area 5.95 ± 1.61 mm2, mean incomplete scaffold apposition area 0.118 ± 0.162 mm2, mean intraluminal defect area 0.013 ± 0.017 mm2, and mean percentage malapposed struts per patient 2.80 ± 3.90%. Scaffolds with >5% malapposed struts were 7. At the 30-day follow-up, target-lesion failure rate was 0%. Non-target-vessel revascularization and target-vessel myocardial infarction (MI) were reported. A non-target-vessel non-Q-wave MI occurred. No cases of cardiac death or scaffold thrombosis were observed.ConclusionIn the present series, the BVS implantation in patients presenting with acute MI appeared feasible, with high rate of final TIMI-flow III and good scaffold apposition. Larger studies are currently needed to confirm these preliminary data
