Resumming the color-octet contribution to e+ e- -> J/psi + X
Recent observations of the spectrum of J/psi produced in e+ e- collisions at
the Upsilon(4S) resonance are in conflict with fixed-order calculations using
the Non-Relativistic QCD (NRQCD) effective field theory. One problem is that
leading order color-octet mechanisms predict an enhancement of the cross
section for J/psi with maximal energy that is not observed in the data.
However, in this region of phase space large perturbative corrections (Sudakov
logarithms) as well as enhanced nonperturbative effects are important. In this
paper we use the newly developed Soft-Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) to
systematically include these effects. We find that these corrections
significantly broaden the color-octet contribution to the J/psi spectrum. Our
calculation employs a one-stage renormalization group evolution rather than the
two-stage evolution used in previous SCET calculations. We give a simple
argument for why the two methods yield identical results to lowest order in the
SCET power counting.Comment: 27 pages, 7 figure
Azimuthal asymmetries in lepton-pair production at a fixed-target experiment using the LHC beams (AFTER)
A multi-purpose fixed-target experiment using the proton and lead-ion beams
of the LHC was recently proposed by Brodsky, Fleuret, Hadjidakis and Lansberg,
and here we concentrate our study on some issues related to the spin physics
part of this project (referred to as AFTER). We study the nucleon spin
structure through and processes with a fixed-target experiment using
the LHC proton beams, for the kinematical region with 7 TeV proton beams at the
energy in center-of-mass frame of two nucleons GeV. We calculate
and estimate the azimuthal asymmetries of unpolarized and
dilepton production processes in the Drell--Yan continuum region and at the
-pole. We also calculate the , and
azimuthal asymmetries of and dilepton production
processes with the target proton and deuteron longitudinally or transversally
polarized in the Drell--Yan continuum region and around resonances region.
We conclude that it is feasible to measure these azimuthal asymmetries,
consequently the three-dimensional or transverse momentum dependent parton
distribution functions (3dPDFs or TMDs), at this new AFTER facility.Comment: 15 pages, 40 figures. Version accepted for publication in EPJ
Baryonium, tetra-quark state and glue-ball in large N_c QCD
From the large-N_c QCD point of view, baryonia, tetra-quark states, hybrids,
and glueballs are studied. The existence of these states is argued for. They
are constructed from baryons. In N_f=1 large N_c QCD, a baryonium is always
identical to a glueball with N_c valence gluons. The ground state 0^{-+}
glueball has a mass about 2450 MeV. f_0(1710) is identified as the lowest
0^{++} glueball. The lowest four-quark nonet should be f_0(1370), a_0(1450),
K^*_0(1430) and f_0(1500). Combining with the heavy quark effective theory,
spectra of heavy baryonia and heavy tetra-quark states are predicted. 1/N_c
corrections are discussed.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figure
Evading the CKM Hierarchy: Intrinsic Charm in B Decays
We show that the presence of intrinsic charm in the hadrons' light-cone wave
functions, even at a few percent level, provides new, competitive decay
mechanisms for B decays which are nominally CKM-suppressed. For example, the
weak decays of the B-meson to two-body exclusive states consisting of strange
plus light hadrons, such as B\to\pi K, are expected to be dominated by penguin
contributions since the tree-level b\to s u\bar u decay is CKM suppressed.
However, higher Fock states in the B wave function containing charm quark pairs
can mediate the decay via a CKM-favored b\to s c\bar c tree-level transition.
Such intrinsic charm contributions can be phenomenologically significant. Since
they mimic the amplitude structure of ``charming'' penguin contributions,
charming penguins need not be penguins at all.Comment: 28 pages, 6 figures, published version. References added, minor

BESII Detector Simulation
A Monte Carlo program based on Geant3 has been developed for BESII detector
simulation. The organization of the program is outlined, and the digitization
procedure for simulating the response of various sub-detectors is described.
Comparisons with data show that the performance of the program is generally
satisfactory.Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, uses elsart.cls, to be submitted to NIM

Brachypodium distachyon line Bd3-1 resistance is elicited by the barley stripe mosaic virus triple gene block 1 movement protein
Barley stripe mosaic virus North Dakota 18 (ND18), Beijing (BJ), Xinjiang (Xi), Type (TY) and CV21 strains are unable to infect the Brachypodium distachyon Bd3-1 inbred line, which harbours a resistance gene designated Bsr1, but the Norwich (NW) strain is virulent on Bd3-1. Analysis of ND18 and NW genomic RNA reassortants and RNA beta mutants demonstrates that two amino acids within the helicase motif of the triple gene block 1 (TGB1) movement protein have major effects on their Bd3-1 phenotypes. Resistance to ND18 correlates with an arginine residue at TGB1 position 390 (R-390) and a threonine at position 392 (T-392), whereas the virulent NW strain contains lysines (K) at both positions. ND18 TGB1 R390K ((ND)TGB1(R390K)) and (ND)TGB1(T392K) single substitutions, and an (ND)TGB1(R390K,T392K) double mutation resulted in systemic infections of Bd3-1. Reciprocal (ND)TGB1 substitutions into (NW)TGB1 ((NW)TGB1(K390R) and (NW)TGB1(K392T)) failed to affect virulence, implying that K-390 and K-392 compensate for each other. In contrast, an (NW)TGB1(K390R,K392T) double mutant exhibited limited vascular movement in Bd3-1, but developed prominent necrotic streaks that spread from secondary leaf veins. This phenotype, combined with the appearance of necrotic spots in certain ND18 mutants, and necrosis and rapid wilting of Bd3-1 plants after BJ strain ((BJ)TGB1(K390,T392)) inoculations, show that Bd3-1 Bsr1 resistance is elicited by the TGB1 protein and suggest that it involves a hypersensitive response
Young and Intermediate-age Distance Indicators
Distance measurements beyond geometrical and semi-geometrical methods, rely
mainly on standard candles. As the name suggests, these objects have known
luminosities by virtue of their intrinsic proprieties and play a major role in
our understanding of modern cosmology. The main caveats associated with
standard candles are their absolute calibration, contamination of the sample
from other sources and systematic uncertainties. The absolute calibration
mainly depends on their chemical composition and age. To understand the impact
of these effects on the distance scale, it is essential to develop methods
based on different sample of standard candles. Here we review the fundamental
properties of young and intermediate-age distance indicators such as Cepheids,
Mira variables and Red Clump stars and the recent developments in their
application as distance indicators.Comment: Review article, 63 pages (28 figures), Accepted for publication in

Effects of a heavy top quark on low energy data using the electroweak chiral Lagrangian
We study large top quark mass effects on low energy physics in the chiral
Lagrangian formulated electroweak theories. We show that these radiative
corrections can be easily obtained from a set of Feynman diagrams involving
only the scalar Goldstone bosons and the fermions when the contributions of the
order (the weak coupling) are ignored. Using CERN LEP and SLAC Linear
Collider (SLC) data we constrain on the nonstandard couplings, which might
originate from the spontaneous symmetry-breaking sector, of the top quark to
the electroweak gauge bosons.Comment: Minor changes made including the title. 27 pages in Latex, 8
