    Three dimensional multi-pass repair weld simulations

    Full 3-dimensional (3-D) simulation of multi-pass weld repairs is now feasible and practical given the development of improved analysis tools and significantly greater computer power. This paper presents residual stress results from 3-D finite element (FE) analyses simulating a long (arc length of 62°) and a short (arc length of 20°) repair to a girth weld in a 19.6 mm thick, 432 mm outer diameter cylindrical test component. Sensitivity studies are used to illustrate the importance of weld bead inter-pass temperature assumptions and to show where model symmetry can be used to reduce the analysis size. The predicted residual stress results are compared with measured axial, hoop and radial through-wall profiles in the heat affected zone of the test component repairs. A good overall agreement is achieved between neutron diffraction and deep hole drilling measurements and the prediction at the mid-length position of the short repair. These results demonstrate that a coarse 3-D FE model, using a ‘block-dumped’ weld bead deposition approach (rather than progressively depositing weld metal), can accurately capture the important components of a short repair weld residual stress field. However, comparisons of measured with predicted residual stress at mid-length and stop-end positions in the long repair are less satisfactory implying some shortcomings in the FE modelling approach that warrant further investigation

    Induced Parity-Breaking Term at Finite Chemical Potential and Temparature

    We exactly calculated the parity-odd term of the effective action induced by the fermions in 2+1 dimensions at finite chemical potential and finite temperature. It shows that gauge invariance is still respected. A more gerneral class of background configurations is considered. The knowledge of the reduced 1+1 determinant is required in order to draw exact conclusions about the gauge invariance of the parity-odd term in this latter case.Comment: 8 pages, LATEX, no figure

    Characterization of the 4-canonical birationality of algebraic threefolds

    In this article we present a 3-dimensional analogue of a well-known theorem of E. Bombieri (in 1973) which characterizes the bi-canonical birationality of surfaces of general type. Let XX be a projective minimal 3-fold of general type with Q\mathbb{Q}-factorial terminal singularities and the geometric genus pg(X)5p_g(X)\ge 5. We show that the 4-canonical map ϕ4\phi_4 is {\it not} birational onto its image if and only if XX is birationally fibred by a family C\mathscr{C} of irreducible curves of geometric genus 2 with KXC0=1K_X\cdot C_0=1 where C0C_0 is a general irreducible member in C\mathscr{C}.Comment: 25 pages, to appear in Mathematische Zeitschrif

    Constructing the fermion-boson vertex in QED3

    We derive perturbative constraints on the transverse part of the fermion-boson vertex in massive QED3 through its one loop evaluation in an arbitrary covariant gauge. Written in a particular form, these constraints naturally lead us to the first non-perturbative construction of the vertex, which is in complete agreement with its one loop expansion in all momentum regimes. Without affecting its one-loop perturbative properties, we also construct an effective vertex in such a way that the unknown functions defining it have no dependence on the angle between the incoming and outgoing fermion momenta. Such a vertex should be useful for the numerical study of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking, leading to more reliable results.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figure

    BϕπB\to \phi \pi and B0ϕϕB^0 \to \phi\phi in the Standard Model and new bounds on R parity violation

    We study the pure penguin decays BϕπB \to \phi\pi and B0ϕϕB^0 \to \phi\phi. Using QCD factorization, we find B(B±ϕπ±)=2.00.1+0.3×108{\cal B}(B^\pm \to\phi\pi^{\pm} )=2.0^{+0.3}_{-0.1}\times 10^{-8}. For the pure penguin annihilation process B0ϕϕB^0 \to \phi\phi, analyzed here for the first time, B(B0ϕϕ)=2.10.3+1.6×109{\cal B}(B^0 \to\phi\phi)=2.1^{+1.6}_{-0.3}\times 10^{-9}. The smallness of these decays in the Standard Model makes them sensitive probes for new physics. From the upper limit of BϕπB\to \phi\pi,we find constraints on R parity violating couplings, λi23λi21<6×105| \lambda{''}_{i23}\lambda{''}_{i21}|<6\times10^{-5}, λi23λi21<4×104| \lambda'_{i23}\lambda'_{i21}|<4\times10^{-4} and λi32λi12<4×104| \lambda'_{i32}\lambda'_{i12}|<4\times10^{-4} for i=1,2,3i=1,2,3. Our new bounds on λi23λi21|\lambda{''}_{i23}\lambda{''}_{i21}| are one order of magnitude stronger than before. Within the available upper bounds for λi23λi21| \lambda{''}_{i23}\lambda{''}_{i21}|, λi23λi21|\lambda'_{i23}\lambda'_{i21}| and λi32λi12|\lambda'_{i32}\lambda'_{i12}|, we find that B(Bϕϕ){\cal B}(B\to\phi\phi) could be enhanced to 10810710^{-8}\sim 10^{-7}.     Andreev Reflection in Ferromagnet/Superconductor/Ferromagnet Double Junction Systems

    We present a theory of Andreev reflection in a ferromagnet/superconductor/ferromagnet double junction system. The spin polarized quasiparticles penetrate to the superconductor in the range of penetration depth from the interface by the Andreev reflection. When the thickness of the superconductor is comparable to or smaller than the penetration depth, the spin polarized quasiparticles pass through the superconductor and therefore the electric current depends on the relative orientation of magnetizations of the ferromagnets. The dependences of the magnetoresistance on the thickness of the superconductor, temperature, the exchange field of the ferromagnets and the height of the interfacial barriers are analyzed.     Spin Injection and Detection in Magnetic Nanostructures

    We study theoretically the spin transport in a nonmagnetic metal connected to ferromagnetic injector and detector electrodes. We derive a general expression for the spin accumulation signal which covers from the metallic to the tunneling regime. This enables us to discuss recent controversy on spin injection and detection experiments. Extending the result to a superconducting device, we find that the spin accumulation signal is strongly enhanced by opening of the superconducting gap since a gapped superconductor is a low carrier system for spin transport but not for charge. The enhancement is also expected in semiconductor devices.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Search for Invisible Decays of η\eta and η\eta^\prime in J/ψϕηJ/\psi \to \phi\eta and ϕη\phi \eta^\prime

    Using a data sample of 58×10658\times 10^6 J/ψJ/\psi decays collected with the BES II detector at the BEPC, searches for invisible decays of η\eta and η\eta^\prime in J/ψJ/\psi to ϕη\phi\eta and ϕη\phi\eta^\prime are performed. The ϕ\phi signals, which are reconstructed in K+KK^+K^- final states, are used to tag the η\eta and η\eta^\prime decays. No signals are found for the invisible decays of either η\eta or η\eta^\prime, and upper limits at the 90% confidence level are determined to be 1.65×1031.65 \times 10^{-3} for the ratio B(ηinvisible)B(ηγγ)\frac{B(\eta\to \text{invisible})}{B(\eta\to\gamma\gamma)} and 6.69×1026.69\times 10^{-2} for B(ηinvisible)B(ηγγ)\frac{B(\eta^\prime\to \text{invisible})}{B(\eta^\prime\to\gamma\gamma)}.     Observation of Two New N* Peaks in J/psi -> ppinˉp pi^- \bar n and pˉπ+n\bar p\pi^+n Decays

    The πN\pi N system in decays of J/ψNˉNπJ/\psi\to\bar NN\pi is limited to be isospin 1/2 by isospin conservation. This provides a big advantage in studying NπNN^*\to \pi N compared with πN\pi N and γN\gamma N experiments which mix isospin 1/2 and 3/2 for the πN\pi N system. Using 58 million J/ψJ/\psi decays collected with the Beijing Electron Positron Collider, more than 100 thousand J/ψpπnˉ+c.c.J/\psi \to p \pi^- \bar n + c.c. events are obtained. Besides two well known NN^* peaks at 1500 MeV and 1670 MeV, there are two new, clear NN^* peaks in the pπp\pi invariant mass spectrum around 1360 MeV and 2030 MeV. They are the first direct observation of the N(1440)N^*(1440) peak and a long-sought "missing" NN^* peak above 2 GeV in the πN\pi N invariant mass spectrum. A simple Breit-Wigner fit gives the mass and width for the N(1440)N^*(1440) peak as 1358±6±161358\pm 6 \pm 16 MeV and 179±26±50179\pm 26\pm 50 MeV, and for the new NN^* peak above 2 GeV as 2068±340+152068\pm 3^{+15}_{-40} MeV and 165±14±40165\pm 14\pm 40 MeV, respectively
